Debian Multimedia :: Desktop Not Working After System Upgrade

Aug 23, 2015

Yesterday I upgraded the system with:

Code: Select allaptitude full-upgrade

And today when I booted it up again I found the desktop didn't work anymore. There's nothing on the desktop but the wallpaper, all icons have disappeared and I can't click or select anything. The top and bottom panels still work though. This is the list of packages I installed and upgraded according to /var/log/apt/history.log are:

Code: Select allgstreamer1.0-libav:amd64 (1.4.4-2, automatic)
bind9-host:amd64 (9.9.5.dfsg-9, 9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u2),
liblwres90:amd64 (9.9.5.dfsg-9, 9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u2),
libfontembed1:amd64 (1.0.61-5, 1.0.61-5+deb8u1),

[code]....

I would like to downgrade the package that spoiled the desktop.

Fedora Networking :: F13 - System Updater Can Access Internet - Firefox Can't

Aug 15, 2010

I am coming from Windows XP Pro, on the same machine (and where I am writing this post from) so the internet clearly works on XP. On F13, the eth0 connection is activated and the drivers for the NIC chip were installed with the OS. The NIC is Intel Pro/100 VE. The problem that occurs is that the system updater (in GNOME) can access the internet, and installed a bunch of updates after installing the OS. I know it can get to the internet because the updates worked and in the System Monitor, I can see both uploading and downloading occurring during the updates. Now the problem is that when I open FF, I can't seem to get to pages, and I get the usual FF error (pic -- [URL]). However, I CAN get to [URL] as well as [URL] , but I cannot access several other subdomains on fedoraproject.org . I also cannot get to any other page online, ([URL] for example).

Ubuntu Installation :: System Updater Forget To Update Kernel Headers

Dec 22, 2010

i A linux-headers-2.6.35-22
i A linux-headers-2.6.35-22-generic
i A linux-image-2.6.35-22-generic

But after automatic update to 2.6.35-23 updater install just linux-image-2.6.35-23-generic without headers. In result kernel modules of nVidia driver not compiled and next boot X server can not start.

Now I can install 2.6.35-24 image and headers by hands, but how to explain updater not forget to update headers next time and why this problem occurs?

Debian Installation :: Package Updater Fails After Update To V8.0

Apr 27, 2015

After Updating to version 8.0 today...

Package Updater GUI is Failing with the message:

No updates are available

=================================

I did updates almost daily on wheezy

Todays updates [via the Pkg Updater GUI] were over 300 meg.
After the updates and reboot
System was showing version 8.0 in the GUI desktop and using 'cat /etc/debian_version'

Then...
From terminal I did ...

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

The dist-upgrade was over 40 minute and ~ 500meg

Things seemed to go well.

I updated sources.list with apt-spy.

[In order to trouble-shoot: I subsequently commented-out the apt-spy sources and found some generic sources on internet]

apt-get and Synaptic GUI both work.

I did/reviewed some settings in the Synaptic GUI I imported two v8 signing keys into Synaptic from [URL]

Hardware :: New Desktop Pc - For Fedora Multimedia System ?

Mar 10, 2010

It's time to retire my old Compaq Presario 5000 desktop (AMD Duron 900MHz, 768MB maxed out RAM, 20 GB hard drive, etc.).

I've been running Fedora on it since Core 4, and now on Fedora 12. The machine is old and slow, what can I say?

I'm looking to purchase a new barebones system and was wondering if anyone else has had experience and knowledge regarding a Fedora system for multimedia multitasking, such as video conversions, DVD authoring, DAW recording, etc.

I'm not sure what the best processor is for my needs, since I'm not sure which GNU/Linux software takes advantage of multi-core processors. I basically want to enjoy the advantages of a dual or even quad-core processor when recording, mixing, and mastering music recordings, and when performing video conversions and editing/DVD authoring. Do Linux apps like Ardour, Audacity, and various video editing apps take advantage and perform better/faster on a dual or quad-core processor? Am I just better off saving my money and sticking with a dual-core? I'm aware of the real-time, low-latency kernel patches, but I think a processor that takes advantage of multi-thread code, and some efficient DDR3 memory would help quite a bit, eh?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Setting-up System As Remote Desktop To Feed House-wide Audio?

Apr 26, 2010

We're in the final process of building a home, and I had them setup a wiring box where all the coax and cat5 terminates into one closet, which will also house my server. Once we get moved in I'd also like to add speakers in each room to have house-wide music, and ideally I'd like the audio to also run into this box with the master input coming from the server as well.My thought was to setup the server with some basic desktop manager like Fluxbox and use that to drive audio throughout the house, whether it be Pandora, Sirius Radio, or whatever. Since the server will be headless I'll need it setup so we can remote into it from our laptops, but I wasn't sure if VNC or some other RDP variant would work. Ideally we'll need to access a unified desktop so traditional terminal services where each users gets their own desktop might not be ideal

Debian Multimedia :: Desktop Windows Lag ?

Jan 19, 2011

I recently switched to Debian Lennyx64 (from ubuntu) and I am really enjoying it so far. I have just one problem, when I drag open windows of any program around on my desktop there is major drawing lag of the window.

This happens in other situations like it is very painful to watch a fast moving IRC chat because of this lag.

I've tried using different windows managers and enviroments and the problem still exists. I have a pair of crossfired Radeon 4850s and I have the drivers installed from AMD's website. I have a first gen Phenom x4 with 8gb of RAM so I don't think its an issue with resources. I tried looking at the Xorg.conf but I really do not know what to look for.

Debian Multimedia :: Desktop Crashes After Upgrade

Now when I log into the desktop it starts loading and before it finishes I wind up with a screen full of text. The first line is usually "BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at <some address that varies>" but sometimes the first line is off the screen. None of KDE, Gnome or xfce work. Recovery mode to a shell prompt works fine. I did a net install of Wheezy on another disk and that runs just fine. I'd like to get my original disk working.

Debian Multimedia :: Why No Desktop Icon With Automount

Sep 9, 2010

I have a 2 Computers:
Computer A has a RAID array in it, and everything works perfectly fine. When Computer A powers on, the RAID array is automatically mounted, mdadm takes care of all of the things it's supposed to, and an icon for the RAID array is automatically placed on the desktop. Everything Just Works (TM).
Computer B is configured similarly to Computer A. They have identical configuration files (at least, all the ones I've checked are identical), and when Computer B powers on, the RAID array is automatically mounted, mdadm takes care of all of the things it's supposed to, BUT, NO icon for the RAID array is automatically placed on the desktop. How do I change that?

They have identical /etc/fstab's (the lines in bold are the ones that matter):
Computer A
mediaserver:/home/mediaserver/Desktop# cat /etc/fstab .....

Computer B
mediaserver:/home/mediaserver# cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information .....

They have identical /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf's
Computer A
mediaserver:/home/mediaserver/Desktop# cat /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
DEVICE partitions
CREATE owner=root group=disk mode=0660 auto=yes
HOMEHOST <system>
MAILADDR root
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid5 num-devices=4 metadata=0.90 UUID=82bfcecf:5cd4d557:2f1fbd23:68e2797c

Computer B
mediaserver:/home/mediaserver# cat /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
DEVICE partitions
CREATE owner=root group=disk mode=0660 auto=yes
HOMEHOST <system>
MAILADDR root
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid5 num-devices=4 metadata=0.90 UUID=6c24c0e5:84ead07e:c109596b:d7e29b7e

The outputs of mount are also very similar:
Computer A
mediaserver:/home/mediaserver/Desktop# mount
/dev/hda1 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
tmpfs on /lib/init/rw type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
procbususb on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/md0 on /mnt/arrayCOMP_A type xfs (rw)

Computer B
mediaserver@mediaserver:~$ mount
/dev/hdc1 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
tmpfs on /lib/init/rw type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
procbususb on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/md0 on /mnt/arrayCOMP_B type xfs (rw)
mediaserver@mediaserver:~$

So how do I get an icon for the device /dev/md0 to automagically appear on the desktop every time the device is mounted (which occurs every time the computer boots up)?
