Fedora :: Desktop Not Displaying After Removing And Re-attaching Monitor

Dec 20, 2009

I have 5 Dell servers that I recently upgraded from 11-12 and have noticed an issue that after removing and re-attaching a monitor I am presented with the login screen. After logging in I am just presented with the background image, nothing else. I have logged in using ssh and restarted gdm with no effect. init 3 followed by init 5 still has no effect. Only when I restart with or without monitor attached does it start working as expected again.Has anybody else seen this issue? It was not present in Fedora 11 on these machines.

Fedora :: Removing Icons From The Desktop?

Aug 10, 2009

I hate desktop icons and shortcuts. I don't ever need them, and they look wasteful and cluttery sitting there unused. Since everything is accessible from the menus, I would like to not have any icons on my desktop in Fedora 11. I have been playing around with the settings for days and can't find a way to make them disappear.

Ubuntu :: Monitor Not Displaying GUI ?

Feb 3, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit using Unetbootin, and I've managed to get into command line Ubuntu fine. I installed gnome (I think gnome, the command was "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop"), typed "startx", and my monitor instantly went to a screen saying "NO SUPPORT". I rebooted, and this time a black screen with a white, low-resolution Ubuntu logo appeared for a few seconds, before "NO SUPPORT" appeared again. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon X1950XT AGP, and my "monitor" is a TV taking HDMI input through an adapter cable from a DVI out, if either of those pieces of info is useful. I'm now back in command line Ubuntu having booted into recovery mode, and I'm using a text-only browser for the first time.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Is Not Displaying Files

Jul 4, 2011

My desktop is not displaying files that I put on the desktop days ago. I checked all four workspaces. All the files are still accessible from Nautilus > Desktop. When I drag a file icon (from Nautilus to the empty desktop) and release, the icon does not drop on the desktop, the icon quickly moves back to the folder where it came from. The top and bottom panels of the desktop still operate normally.I am running Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit with classic-Ubuntu desktop.I also noticed that Startup Applications is missing "chrome" that I added this morning.I am the only user on this system. The system is a duel boot Ubuntu - win7. The Ubuntu partition is formated ext4 and there is a separate NTFS-formated partition named "storage" for folders that are accessible from both Ubuntu and win7. That should not be an issue because the desktop folder is on the Ubuntu partition, /home/[user]/Desktop. I have not booted win7 in the last few days. The desktop first
appeared empty after I did two things:

1) installed CryptKeeper from Ubuntu Software Center
2) Enable Automatic Login

After I clicked Applications > System > CryptKeeper, the desktop did not respond to mouse clicks. I did not find any CryptKeeper instructions. I don't know how to use CryptKeeper. The login screen still asked for credentials after I rebooted. So I uninstalled CryptKeeper, disable Automatic Login, and rebooted. But the desktop is still not displaying the files.Could CryptKeeper have changed something in my profile?Does Ubuntu have a log file to see exactly what I did? What else can I try to restore my desktop and enable Automatic Login?

Ubuntu :: Left And Top Menus And Desktop Not Displaying / Show That?

Nov 18, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for several years, and wanted to try the netbook remix on my old Acer Aspire 5050 laptop.

I tried to install and switch from desktop 10.10 to netbook 10.10, and the home page and menus didn't display properly. I took this as being due to some conflict with an exiting bit of software (I use it as a LAMP server and dev machine, so it had a lot of stuff one it). Keen to try the netbook edition, and clean down my laptop, I installed in from scratch, formatting the HDD etc.

Anyway, the issue is still the same.

It is quite hard to describe what is displayed. The left menu is just empty, with no icons. The top bar is also empty. When you mouse over the left menu, blank pop-outs appear. Also, some icons are blank or mangled. Occasionally, when I close a dialogue, or do an alt-tab, the left menu icons appear, but only for a split second.

Anyway, screen dumps (reduced to half size) will explain this better, so here are a couple...

Top and left menus showing as empty semi transparent bars.

Same with an app running

with mouse over a left menu item, and a blank pop-out with black surround. code...

Fedora :: Removing Notifications And Safely Removing Drives?

These should be my last pleas for help with regard to Fedora 13. I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

Fedora :: Cannot Get Graphical Desktop On Boot When No Monitor Attached (F13)

Jun 2, 2010

I've put a fresh install of Fedora 13 x86_64 on my new server and I have it automatically log in to the gnome desktop so I can control it via VNC. However this only happens when there is a monitor physically connected when the computer boots. If there is no monitor present at boot time, there is no graphical session started, however I want it to start whether or not a monitor is present.

My hardware is a Zotac IONITX-G-E board (which has an Atom N330 and a NVidia ion chipset of some description). I'm using the Fedora default graphics driver (nouveau). Why doesn't it start a graphical session with no monitor, and is there any way to get Fedora to start one whether or not there is a monitor connected?

Debian Multimedia :: Remove KDE Applications Without Removing Entire Desktop

May 9, 2015

I've installed Debian GNU/Linux, from a Testing NetInstall ISO, then after setting up the system, I've installed the KDE desktop.Well, I like to have a system with the applications I want, not the applications that the system wants for me, I mean, that's the point of GNU/Linux, isn't?

Thus I want to remove some applications from KDE, let's say KWrite. I know it's a good text editor, but Kate is way better, at least for me, and... I should have the authority to decide what applications I want on my system, I think you got the point. So I installed Kate, and when I try to remove KWrite, APT asks me to remove nothing but this applications: kde-baseapps kde-plasma-desktop.

I don't understand why do KDE forces me to get rid of the entire desktop... when I'm just trying to remove a single application, and a replacement it's already installed.

Ubuntu :: No User Permissions For /home After Installing & Removing Desktop

Aug 22, 2010

i'm having trouble with my fresh ubuntu installation (netbook edition). what i did was install xubuntu-desktop on top of that (wanted to check it out)..........didn't really work for me, so i removed it, hoping this would also remove the xubuntu desktop logon screen, which i didn't like. since this wasn't the case, i went to synaptics and removed all and everything with xubuntu in the title. NOTE: in the same session i turned off password requests for login - it could also matter, but i'm not sure, so i thought i'd mention it. the end result: three warning messages at logon

- Could not update ICEauthority file /home/dsikl/.ICEauthority

- There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/bgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

- Nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/dsikl/Desktop, /home/dsikl/.nautilus. Before running Nautilus, please create these folders, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create them.

i don't have access to my programs, administrator tools, /home folder, nothing.........the only thing that appears is the right part of the top bar (network, clock etc.), but also completely different.......it doesn't have my WLAN data anymore (can't access it), and all i have managed to get started was (accidentally) terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T, and from there I can use sudo, or even start nautilus, but can't access my own user, no matter what.........in the end i somehow managed to get to the point where it requested my passphrase, which i wanted to print out a day before it happened, but didn't and the screenshot is unfortunately within my /home folder. i tried reinstalling xubuntu-desktop, even ubuntu-desktop, i repaired broken packages from the recovery mode, tried everything i could to get the bugger going again, no success yet.

i would be happy to do a clean install, but there's one spreadsheet in the documents folder which i desperately need and i really need to get a hold of it before formating. could some sort of a rescue livecd help? i just need that one file. the easiest would be if i could somehow repair whatever packages may be broken, or manually (with apt-get or similar) reinstall the additional xubuntu packages i manually removed via synaptics, but i wouldn't have a clue what those were
