Jul 17, 2011I am trying to make my Apache server show symbolic links in a directory listing, but have so far been unsuccessful. In my latest attempt, I have placed the following code in .htaccess, in the directory with the symlinks that I want listing:

Feb 1, 2010I have RHEL5 with apache installed and running. I have a directory off of / called software that I would like to have show up as a directory listing so if I go to [URL] I get the directory listing. I have tried searching around and nothing seems to work for me. So out of the box how do I get this to work? My server properly resolves to [URL] so I am good there.

Jun 20, 2010Firefox opens file listing instead of Nautilus opening file listing.When I access a folder via "Places" -> "Home Folder" or "Places" -> "Downloads", Firefox opens and list the contents of the directory.I have re-installed Nautilus, un-installed Firefox and then going to "Places" -> "Home Folder" or "Places" -> "Downloads" launches Nautilus and I can view the contents normally. Anybody else had this problem with Firefox ? Anybody know how to fix this Firefox problem ?Running Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 64bit.

Sep 6, 2010Is there a command to return a recursive listing of sub-directories and the number of files in them? I have found plenty of ways to give me the total number of files in a directory structure, but none that gives a list of the sub-directories with the number of files in them. "du" gives me a listing of directories with their sizes, but I couldn't find an option (or any other way) to give me the number of files as well. Ideally, I'd like to get list with "Size" "Files" "Dir name" - And the order of the columns doesn't matter. Is there a "simple" command line solution or do I need a shell script for that?

May 3, 2011I have, for example, a folder called "MyFolder" and it contains 3 files: MyFile1, MyFile2, MyFile3. The only file that I do NOT want a particular user/group to even see that it exists is, for exmple, MyFile2.So, when they do a directory listing on MyFolder, they should only see MyFile1 and MyFile3. How can this be done in Linux? The important thing is that it is not just preventing them from "executing" MyFile2, but to prevent them from even knowing that it exists by not including it in a directory listing.This is a simpified example using one file, but in reality, I have lots of files and some of those that I want to block are also subfolders.It is very important for me to hide the existence of certain files/folders when the user does a directory listing. It's also important that the files stay in their current folder (that is, I can't use a workaround which requires moving all the files into a separate folder and then securing that folder).

I was given a old computer with a Pentium 4 processor; 512mb of RAM, and a 42gig hard drive.I was reading over some guides and I came across this guide. It is very self explanatory; however I am having issues with my configuration files within Apache and my firewall (shorewall).I am focusing on web security. I don't even want to web edit until I know it is "lock-down" secure. In Apache are some supposed settings called Server Tokens and SeverSignature. I can't locate these files in my apache2.conf unfortunately.Here is what is posted to me in the config:

Ubuntu :: Missing Desktop Icons And Broken File Manager?
Mar 15, 2010have only been using it for a couple weeks now. i installed Picasa from google just now and since then my desktop icons have disapeared and if i open the file manager it closes within 5 seconds. i have tried rebooting the computer and have now completly removed picasa and the problem is still there.

May 12, 2010I'm configuring Apache for the first time on this box (8.04 LTS) and Apache2 for the first time ever. "Out of the box" it runs fine and I get the "It Works" page okay. But I'd like to use the virtual site feature to direct Apache to a folder in my user space, and I keep getting errors.
When I point a browser at localhost, the 404 message is "The requested URL / was not found on this server." and the /var/log/apache2/error.log ends with "File does not exist: /htdocs.
Here's my config file from the apache2/sites-available folder:

I diff'ed this file with the default and the only differences are in the DocumentRoot line and the <Directory ...> line.
My public_html folder has permissions 755 and the index.html file is 644.

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache/PHP Set Root Directory Of Website?
Nov 27, 2010In my website, I'm putting shared files in a "/global" folder. Both "styles.css" and "library.php" are in this global folder. HTML code seems to be working ok - the following bit works great to pick up a style sheet:

I receive a "failed to open stream: No such file or directory" error.Spelling out the entire full path works, like so:

But this type of code is no good as I may change servers in the future. I have my "DocumentRoot" set correctly in my sites-available file. It seems as if PHP is ignoring it. Is there a config file someplace (htaccess? Local php.ini?) where I should update my root directory for this site only? Or am I following bad form and there's a better way to do this? Relative paths don't seem like the answer here though...
Ubuntu Servers :: (IMO) Apache - Directory PHPInfo Does Not Exist
Mar 23, 2011Have Apache running on Ubuntu Server. Say I have a domain, www.somewhere.com, and I have uploaded a file, phpinfo.php. If I hit http://www.somewhere.com/phpinfo.php, I get my file as expected. However, If I hit non-existent file http://www.somewhere.com/phpinfo/somefile.dat, it also acts as if I hit phpinfo.php, instead of giving me a 404 error. It seems that because the DIRECTORY "phpinfo" does not exist, it decided that I must have meant to hit phpinfo.php at the root of the site.
If I create an empty "phpinfo" directory then it behaves as expected and gives me a 404 not found page. This is reproducible for any other file name you can think of. I'm sure this is some Apache convenience behavior but I would like to disable it (it is messing with some mod_rewrite stuff I would like to do). Because it's hard to describe I cannot figure out which Apache option it might be (whatever I Google for gives me completely unrelated results).

Feb 2, 2009I have FC10 newly installed, and Apache is serving content from /var/www/ okay.
I'm trying to get Apache to serve web content from user's home directories. This is what I've tried with no success:
Uncommented 'UserDir public_htm' in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and commented out 'UserDir disabled'.
And...
Uncommented user directory section in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. It now reads as follows:

I also tried setenforce 0 to temporarily disable SELinux until the next reboot. No luck. It doesn't appear to be an SELinux issue.

Main PDCs are running Windows Server 2003 using Active Directory, ideally what would happen is that users have a web share under [URL].. - the server behind this would be Linux (either Fedora or CentOS).
What kind of configuration would be needed for Apache to make this possible? The way I have planned so far is to have the Linux box auth against the AD domain (possibly joined), with Apache setup to share local public_html folders. Not sure how I can get rid of the tilde from the start of the username, but it should be pretty easy.

Directory public_html has two files: index.html and index.php, both with file permissions: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root If I now try to open http://myhost/~kees/index.html (or index.php) in my browser I get a 403 Forbidden error. If I look in my error log I see the following messages if I first try to open the index.html and then the index.php file:

sudo -u apache ls /var/www/html
> movies
This works, sudo -u /var/www/html/movies returns the permission denied error.
As well sudo -u /home/username/movies
Is the user apache chrooted by default? SELinux is in permissive mode. What can I do?

May 18, 2010I have a disk of all the rpms (just the rpms) of RH Ent. 5.1. I needed to intall some packages from it.
For that I created a local repository.
Following is what I did:
1. mounted DVD in /media
2. Issued createrepo on /media (Now the packages are in /media/mycdrom/RHE5Rpms and the repodata is in /media)
3. I added the following in the /etc/yum.conf
Now when I try to install, for example, qt4-devel, it can resolve the dependencies for one level. For example, it resolves libpng-devel (which is needed by qt4-devel), but it fails to resolve libpng (which is needed by libpng-devel). But libpng package is both available in the DVD and is already installed on the machine.
Following is the tail of error messages I get after issuing the command 'yum install qt4-devel'
All the above packages are available through the DVD and already installed on the machine.
