Debian Installation :: Upgrade To Squeeze From Lenny / No Icons Or Toolbar
Jul 30, 2011I have a server that was happily running Lenny. Last reboot was over 100 days ago. So I decided to fix it and install Squeeze.the upgrade went well, booted into grub. (with the grub2 test menus).When I login using the console, I get the nice GUI login, and something looks like the graphics world is being setup. The screen goes to a pretty light blue background. But there are no icons, no toolbars, no windows.I could believe something in the Xconfig is broken, say it thinks I have a much larger screen, and all the icons are off the edges. But that is only a guess.

Aug 16, 2010In Slackware 13.1, my OpenOffice menu buttons did not appear after installing the Slackbuild from slackbuild.org. I think this is a common issue. After reading around, I putCode:export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kdeinto my /etc/profile. OpenOffice now opens fine and all the menu button icons are present and correct but this only happens if I start OO from the CLI. Feb 7, 2010I had been using Amarok 1.4 with no problems, but somehow in trying to fix the 'Launching HTTP Cache' bug, I made the Amarok toolbar icons disappear and be replaced with an image of a page. The only thing I did was install qt3-qtconfig and systemsettings, then removed them because they were not able to help me fix the HTTP cache bug, and they also altered my pointer to KDE-style. After removal and a system restart, Amarok looks like the screenshot I took. how to get the icons back?

May 26, 2011I only just upgraded to Squeeze and am now running Fluxbox 1.1.1. The toolbar is acting strangely, though, and I can't seem to find a solution online.
An example: I open Iceweasel, Thunar, and Icedove. If Iceweasel has focus, its window title will be on the left side of the toolbar. If I switch applications, and put that Thunar window in focus, the Thunar window title because the most-left item on the toolbar. I focus Icedove, Icedove's window title becomes the most left object on the toolbar and so on.

Nov 18, 2010The toolbar is completely empty and when I run apps or open windows, the icons do not show up. The weird thing is when I select 'Panel Properties' and UNSELECT 'expand', then it shows up. But then my toolbar shrinks and doesnt go 100% in width.

Oct 7, 2010In my desktop toolbar on the right side where my running applications are shown etc. I have some problems:
1) After a while and after some messages have been shown and applications started, there is a growing gap which gets larger. When I move the mouse over the gap, I see tooltips belonging to the application to the right which is always a different one so I assume that it is a toolbar problem and no application problem.
2) Some icons are not clickable with the left mouse button, e.g. Rhythmbox. When I left click on it, nothing happens.
3) When I open the volume control with a left click, I cannot close it by clicking somewhere else. I always have to click on the "Mixer" Button to see a whole window and then I can close it.

Jul 31, 2010I am using OpenOffice 3.2.1 and Opensuse 11.3 with KDE 4.4.4. When I use the KDE4 integration and the oxygen icon set, I'am getting a mixture of oxygen (KDE4) icons and crystal (KDE3) icons in the symbol panel (I hope this is the correct word in english). E.g. the icons for "bold", "italic" or underlined are crystal icons instead of oxygen. I had the same "problem" with Opensuee 11.2 and older OpenOffice versions.
Interestingly, when I start OpenOffice in my root account, OpenOffice shows all icons correctly as oxygen icons. When creating a new user account (a test account), OpenOffice use the icon mixture. Also transferring the ".oo3" folder of root to my user account didn't solve the "problem". Of course, this is not a real problem with OpenOffice, it's more a desing error (but I like to solve it ). Who else has a mixture of oxygen and crystal icons?
Ubuntu :: Locked Toolbar - New Position For The Toolbar That Sits At The Top Of The Screen
Mar 30, 2011I have been working for the last three months with Ubuntu 10 on a destop. Doing just fine and loving it. I decided to try a new position for the toolbar that sits at the top of the screen. I did a right click and moved it to the right side of the scree, didn't like the look of that. Right click on the bar and moved it to the left, didn't like that either, so moved it to the bottom. having done all that I thought I could put it back at the top but alas, I can not right click on the Toolbar.
It seems as though the two bars are fighting each other at the bottom of the screen.I would like to go back to the default position at the top of the screen. I do have a terminal window available to me on the desktop so if I could find out the command line to type in, I should be able to reset my tool bar. Being new I have no idea what this command would be.

Debian Multimedia :: FBPanel Menu Don't Have Icons
Feb 20, 2015I play around with OpenBox and FBPanel, and quite like it.
I started to install both OpenBox and FBPanel in Debian, and the menu don't have any icons on it.
Simply I'm not going to reconfigure everything in both distro, I copied fbpanel configuration folder to my Ubuntu home.
Then I install FBPanel in Ubuntu it have icons within the menus.

I've googled around without any luck about this problem. It's minor and everything else works okay, but still this shouldn't be happen. Since I see the screenshots of FBPanel in Debian they all have icons on it. Tried changing the icon theme, nothing works. If it's because FBPanel can't find any icon, then the launcher shouldn't have any icons right? Also, I use the exact same configuration on both.
Is it because Debian uses different version of FBPanel? Haven't checked both version tho.

Is there a way to add icons like /usr/bin/skype ]usr/sbin/synaptic.(those nor shown in Add New Icons) in the lower panel which I have extended through the whole desktop?This could easily be done both in gnome and gnome-classic desktops till wheezy.

Sep 14, 2010I'm trying to upgrade a headless terminal server like box from Etch to Lenny. Users log in to this box using a GoGlobal client and use applications such as OpenOffice and Iceweasel. Because of the ended support for Etch we want to upgrade this machine to Debian Lenny as soon as possible and in order to save time we decided to dist-upgrade instead of installing a new machine. I've done this upgrade in a test environment and everything is working as expected except for OpenOffice, which seems broken after the upgrade:
The problem seems to be caused by the anti aliasing features of OpenOffice and disabling these features in the options panel (Extra -> Options -> OpenOffice.org View -> Screen font anti aliasing) fixes the UI somewhat:
However, as can be seen in the last screenshot, disabling anti aliasing makes the whole thing look terrible. I've searches the net for solutions such as this one but so far I've not been able to fix this. Is there anyone who can point me towards what has changed in the way fonts are rendered since Lenny and what might cause this breakage for OpenOffice? Other applications such as Iceweasel work perfectly and look better then before.

Nov 26, 2014I use Debian Jessie which includes a gnome shell version 3.14.1. The problem is that icons of some applications such as Viber or Starcal are not shown in the tray while the icons of other applications (e.g. Skype of Dropbox) are shown without problem.
By the way, the problem does not relate to loading, because all applications are loaded and a space is considered for each in the tray, but the problem is that for some of applications the pictures of their icons are not shown.

May 2, 2015I saw that on every computer in which I installed LXDE on Debian 8 (the problem was not existing on Debian 7.8.0)
So I decided to use mate-desktop-environment but a brand new problem (always ) made his apparition when I try to use tightvncserver on a Mate desktop (no task bar, and memory growing GB after GB up to the memory explosion after 1 or 2 minutes with 16GB RAM -I will post another subject for that once I will know more things about it - since it is, after all, an huge problem causing the computer to crash if "reboot" our "vncserver -kill :1" is not quickly done)
But here talking about LXDE taskbar: others LXDE users, do you have this problem with the icons ?

For example, I have a Projects directory and I noticed that there is a special 'projects' directory icon available in my icon theme; I think that it would be nice to use that icon instead of the default directory icon.Google informs me that the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs can be edited to give certain directories special properties, including special icons. However, all my changes to the file get reverted after restarting my computer. Is there a way to make changes to user-dirs.dirs permanent?

Feb 9, 2011I'm using squeeze and the xserver-xorg-core, kdebase and kdm packages with their dependencies in addition to the base system installation. I get glitches when I try to drag the icons on the panel: I can't move them properly and occasionally the whole screen gets redrawn (by this I mean it goes black and gets back several seconds later.) and gives an error with signal 11 (segmentation fault). The problem is not specific to my user account, because I tried it with a newly created user, and I didn't do any configuration on mine either.
