Ubuntu :: LiveCD - Can't Get Past Login & Password - Puter Just Hangs
May 23, 2011I'm in LiveCD (Natty) I blew up the OS. Can't get past login & password. 'Puter just hangs there. I'm going to do a clean install, but want to make a copy of my /home. I tried gksudo nautilus to copy all of /home to an external hard drive (via USB). It won't copy all, saying that I lack permissions. I've read about recursively copying, etc. and cannot make out the sequence I need. I must copy all that is in my /home and preserve all the links, dependencies, file and directory ownership permissions and also must get the command for copying them from the external hard drive if the clean install goes bad.

Debian Installation :: Squeeze Won't Take Root Password ?
Jan 19, 2011I finally got Sueeze installed and it works great for my user account. It won't accept my root password and so I can not do anything as root. This is strickly a home desktop setup and I am the only user. I have a working Ubuntu 10.10 in the ajacent partition. How can I change (or reinstall) my root password. Everything I've found says to boot single user and I have, but I still need the root password in Debian.

May 3, 2010I have a fresh install of Squeeze with CD1. I have no root password to open admin apps, so I set one with 'sudo passwd root' and then I'm able to open them, but only once. I have to set the root password every time prior to opening an admin app. Am I doing something wrong? Could I be missing a package?

Jul 17, 2010I just installed Squeeze because Lenny didn't have the best Bluetooth support. (Just installed blueman and everything I have works without any configuring, by the way). In Lenny, gdmsetup would allow me to choose a theme for the login screen as well as change settings for logging in. With Squeeze, fully updated, I only get a couple simple options for changing automatic login (screen shot of gdmsetup).
There is a config file that I found: Code: /etc/gdm3/greeter.gconf-defaults It is a simple config file but I do not know the available themes and cannot preview them.

Nov 5, 2010I'm trying to do is protect the computer against housemates. The standard procedure I do with Lenny:
1. Password protect BIOS.
2. In BIOS, always boot from hard drive. Disable booting from any other device such as USB or CD-ROM.
3. Password protect Grub (v1) using the "password --md5 $1$9MuaA/$5TDLgvmcEiCWNr5W9VaMK1" syntax in my menu.lst file.
With the above precautions in place, [I think] the only way to gain root access to the system is to take the case lid off and proceed to do stuff physically (like set jumpers and/or take out the hard drive). Am I correct? My reasoning for this is, the computer boots -> must boot from HD -> must load Grub -> must go to default menu item since others are protected, and cannot command prompt in Grub without password.
Anyhow, In Squeeze, I was a bit disappointed to find out, after doing a bit of Google-research, that Grub v2 (which is standard on Squeeze now) does not easily support password protecting the Grub menu. Am I correct? Will this issue perhaps be addressed in the Squeeze final release? Is this feature dumb anyways because the Grub password is of no use (i.e. my paragraph above is complete horseradish)?
Another thing I would like to do is change the console font and size back to something more "normal" or "classic", not some crazy tiny font that's only found in totally bleeding edge Linux distrubutions <gasp!>. I found that the Squeeze console font (e.g. when I type Ctrl+Alt+F1) is wicked tiny. I wanna change it to "normal". Grub v2 password and console font config?
Debian Multimedia :: Keyboard And Mouse Freeze After Login In Squeeze
Feb 10, 2011I have a problem with mouse and keyboard. Both freeze within 30sec to half an hour after logging into squeeze 64bit (using gnome). My hardware is Asus P7P55D EVO (tested with linux according to ASUS) with Intel i5 760 CPU. I use IBM keyboard and Trust PS2 mouse. I also have MSI HD4350 graphics card, that was at least listed on Ubuntu to be supported, worked fine also with Lenny.
When using same combination with Lenny (64-bit) I never found any problem with either keyboard nor mouse, even running long nights. However there was need to upgrade to Squeeze since it has newer kernel supporting the sensors on board my MB. I used same mouse and keyboard also on Ubuntu 9.10 and had never problems. However when I upgraded to new MB I started with Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit version and experienced same keyboard and mouse freeze as I have now in squeeze. Only way out from this status is hard reset using PC reset button.
I connected with putty to my linux box and found following (while the linux box was on frozen state) from dmesg on keyboard: :/var/log$ dmesg | grep -i keyboard [ 1.064628] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input0
Server :: Cannot Login To FTP (proftpd) With A Single User On Debian Squeeze?
Jul 19, 2011So I've been trying to get a single user to login to an FTP site I've created using proftpd and I haven't had much luck. So check this out: this only applies to one user, I can "su" to the user account so I know the password is set, and I am even able to SSH into the box as this user. This totally eliminates a bad/incorrect password and the server IS accepting connections on port 21 because I can FTP as other users. I've ruled out the client because I tried locally and using a command promptWinders but still no luck. This is what I'm seeing in the logs when I attempt to connect using an FTP client.

He had tried kinds driver to install it; from fglrx, ati, radeon & radeonhd ; and also with kind ways. But they are gave same result, when login screen should appear, but it didn't. Debian Configuration :: Squeeze X Login Stopped Working - Console Works
Mar 30, 2011I have been using my system for couple of weeks, and normally update software when the icon is displayed on top bar (gnome). Last couple of days there were updates for X, and I am not sure whether that is the cause of my problem. Once bootup, I get the login screen. When enter the password the login screen keep coming back. there is no error about any password issue, or anything. It keeps prompt me to enter the password.
I could login back the following way.
1. ctrl + alt + F1 , and login with the same username/pwd as for X
2.change to root
3.pkill gdm3
4.exit from root to user privilege
5. startx
The system starts X correctly and no login screen is displayed. I could use the system as usual.
The only thing I did custom to my system was upgrading to the latest kernel (2.6.38) using the source. This was to get support for my hardware, but that was about a month ago. I do not see anything in /var/log (X, demesg etc).

May 22, 2011I installed 2.6.38 from backports. It boots OK, and among the start-up messages it says it has started kdm, but then it offers only a console login prompt, no GUI. I assumed (perhaps optimistically?) that newer kernels would be backward-compatible, and that any dependencies on other software would be enforced by the package mechanisms. Running amd64, Squeeze, KDE.

Nov 21, 2010I seem to remember there is a section for questions about other distros but I can't find it anymore. I have made a live usb from a Debian testing live image (.img) using the dd command. It all worked well and it booted flawlessly. But then when it booted into the Debian screen it asked for my user name and password. I never set any user name and password so of course I couldn't log in.

Oct 28, 2014Suddenly Debian started rejecting my user pw and I have to login as root. Perhaps this is a coincidence, but this started when I re-booted after adding Russian keyboard layout in etc/default/keyboard. The Russian keyboard added successfully.
Being logged in as root, renewed the pw of my user account (actually assigned the same as wes previously), got confirmation the the pw has been changed. Reloaded. Yet it keeps complaining that the pw is wrong.
