View 7 RepliesEverything was fine last night, but this morning I signed into my Squeeze box and found that website play audio fine, Hulu Desktop works, some games work, etc. but Rhythmbox, VLC, Totem, and others don't . It all started with an attempt to diagnose a lack of sound in TVtime.

I'm a long time reader, first time writer. I have a question. I've been trying to do a dual boot with XP Pro SP2 and Ubuntu 9.10. When I setup everything and try to pick which OS I want to load, the GRUB freezes and won't boot/let me select anything else. I have to turn it off and then back on to only select Ubuntu or let the time run out to automatically select Ubuntu. I've got a Compaq Presario 2105 w/80gb HDD, 433.2MiB, and an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ Processor.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).
I recently switched from Windows XP to stable Debian w/KDE on my work dell B120 laptop. I have been trying to diagnose freezes. In the evenings I have been leaving an SSH connection to my home computer. I leave a command running that writes the current time to a file every ten minutes. The past two nights it has stopped writing the time after a couple hours (not at the exact same time), and I am no longer able to ssh from my home computer to my work computer.
When I get back to work, the work laptop is frozen. CTRL+Alt+Backspace does not help, neither does CTRL+ALT+F1. Ctrl+Alt+SysRq works sometimes. It has not yet frozen while I have been present.
I tried disabling the screen saver and monitor power controls in KDE, thinking that those only come on when I am away, so they might be the cause. But it did not help.
I took the last time recorded by my ssh connection and looked through the logs trying to find something that happened at that time, but the only event occuring around the time the SSH connection dropped was a chron job that runs every hour. As far as I can tell, the chron job does not actually do anything but write to the log each hour.
So obviously I need to post more information. What would be helpful? Which log or configuration files might contain clues?
I see these lines in my logs:
kernel: Kernel logging (proc) stopped.
imklog 3.18.6, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
It appears at 6:25 AM each day between when the SSH connection drops and when I arrive in the morning. Do I need to restart logging?
im currently using ubuntu 9.10 in 30gb partition, when i open google chrome, netbeans, pidgin messenger and mysql it causes pc o freeze, which i has to shut down pc by cutting off electricity.
is that due to virtual memory?
i do have a strange problem get running php5 on lenny 64 inside apache2. i had installed it as all instructions on the web does: # apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-cli php5-common php5-cgi
apt has enabled php automatically, so
/etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.conf does have inside:
<ifmodule mod_php5.c>
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml .php3
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've installed Debian 8 from the minimum CD. All is well. I'd like to compile PHP 5.6.9 from source. The current version installed on Debian is 5.6.7.I've attempted to remove 5.6.7 using
Code: Select allapt-get remove php
and
Code: Select allapt-get remove php5
to no avail. I've compiled PHP 5.6.9 from source on the machine, but php -v is still showing 5.6.7.I know this probably sounds silly, but I have this installed in a VM to mimic my clients server. How do I remove the current version of PHP on the system?
I have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).
lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-
1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)
I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-
ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Debian/Lenny on a iBook clamshell. I couldn't seem to burn an install CD that the iBook would recognize, so I eventually copied the contents of the CD onto a self-powered USB drive and I can now get the iBook to boot off of that thru open firmware. However, when I get to the Debian installer main menu, it still won't read the CD, and apparently it does not have network drivers to install over Ethernet. Is there any way I can supply a driver for the ethernet interface (lspci reports that its a sun GEM ethernet interface) or somehow convince the installer to install from the content of the USB drive (which is a duplicate of what's on the installer CD)? Heck, if it'd be easier to get the Airport interface running to reach the Internet I'd be up for that too.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have problem with loging, actually iptables logs a data but it seems that for some reasons does not writes in a log file:
Code:
iptables -L -v
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 406 packets, 124K bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
0 0 ACCEPT tcp -- any any xxxxxxxxxxx anywhere tcp dpt:xxxx
[Code]....
i checked /var/log/message and /var/log/syslog nothing is here related to iptables. then i create separate file for Iptables by adding this: kern.warning /var/log/iptables.log in my rsyslog.conf it does create iptables.log file inside /var/ but its still empty
I've found that I need to use pppoeconf, but it doesn't work. I have default Debian kernel with PPPOE module. After looking for the modem it gives me the following message:"Sorry, I scanned 1 interface, but the Access Concentrator of you provider did not respond. Please check your network and modem cables. Another reason for the scan failure may also another pppoe process which controls the modem."pppoeconf detected the interface successfully (eth0, I have only one interface), but doesn't work. It does, however, work with my router connecting without any issues.
