Debian Installation :: Can't Really Download A DVD Image?

Oct 1, 2010

I got my parts and am looking to build it tomorrow, however I don't have an OS with me to test it. This is mostly for college, multimedia stuff, so I'm obviously going need Windows on it. I'm leaning towards Debian or a Debian derivative like Ubuntu, I used that back when it was trendy and found it pretty good, but I hear Debians the same but better.

I want to get Linux on it at some stage - is it easy to install Linux on the machine first then windows, or do I have to do it the other way around? I've never installed Linux FIRST. I want to assign a particularly partition to it and keep the free space for when I install Windoze on it.

How big is the basic Debian install and where's the best place to download it? I have a shitty connection here so I can't really download a DVD image.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Download 10.04 Image Into LiveCD Filesystem?

Sep 30, 2010

Recently I've been struggling with an upgrade to Karmic Koala (see my Cannot Boot from Hard Disk) from Jaunty Jackalope. Despite a valiant effort to find and install grub2 I've decided instead to download and install Lucid Linx. However when I visit the download site on ubuntu.com it gives no options as to where I might save it. Since I'm currently running Karmic from a LiveCD the filesystem doesn't have enough room for the 700mg .iso, although I have plenty of room on the 40 gig HDD. How do I point the download towards my hdd rather than the LiveCD filesystem?

Fedora :: Mounting Point Of A DVD Image File In A VM?

Dec 8, 2009

I installed Fedora 12 in a virtual environment using VMware workstation, I am learning a Linux book. 1. The book ask me to change my directory to Fedora 12 DVD's RPM file directory under terminal. It assumes the mounting point for the disk image would be e.g. '/media/dvd/packages/', but if I type in 'cd /media/dvd/packages/' it obviously won't find the directory. So how do I navigate to the directory using CD command, but I guess put it more accurately I will need to find out what is the mounting point of the Fedora 12 DVD image in my VM.

2. I have another question with my root password, I cannot login as root when the VM first boot up, at the login screen where you are asked about your account name and password screen, So I have to use my normal user account (made up by my first name and last name) when I installed Fedora. But I know exactly what my root password is. The weird thing is I can still access to the root account in the desktops windows environment no problem. e.g. if I go to the top bar 'system-administration-authentication' program, it will let me in after I typed in my root password. In other words, I have access to all the admin tools in the desktop environment.

Debian Installation :: Redirecting All Logs To Different Location

Jul 27, 2010

So 1 year ago I installed Lenny, but in the process of installation during the splitting of the drive I have mistakenly set a seperate parition for "/var/logs" instead of "/var/log". Is there any way to redirect all the logs to this seperate partition (var/logs) or it's better to go through the whole trouble* of installing Lenny again? *the trouble because it was hell of a problem to fix grub that didn't recognize SmartArray RAID (cciss driver), the problem is that I don't really remember how I fixed it. Symbolic link won't help since physically it will still be on the other partition. Do I have any other option?

Jun 10, 2011

I have been following this tutorial [URL]. When I get to the end of the installation and try to install GRUB to the /boot partition I have set up it throws a fatal error at me. No explanation other than it can't write to the specified location. I double checked all the partition settings which were the same as the tutorial then skipped the GRUB installation and finished. The only thing I can think of that might be wrong is that the 250MB partition size specified for /boot in the tutorial is too small.

Debian Installation :: USB Installation Fails To Find An Installation Iso Image

Aug 15, 2010

I have installed Debian maybe 30 times over the years since about 2003, stable, testing and Sid on two different desktops and two different laptops. The only problem I have ever had is sometimes with a flaky daily build. It is one of my favorite distros.

BUT, I am totally frustrated is trying to install to a USB. I have followed the manual step by step about 6 times in the past two weeks. The result is always the same. The installation fails to find an installation iso image. Yes, I know the iso image and the hd-media vmlinuz and initrd.gz files are supposed to be the same version.

File: debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso from: [url]

Files: vmlinuz and initrd.gz from: [url]

The USB boots to a Language selection screen and proceeds through the Keyboard selection screen with no problems.

The next step which searches for an installation iso image fails.

Skipping that step and trying to load installer components from iso image also fails.

Searching the entire PC for an installation iso image also fails. (I even copied the netinst iso image to the HD root directory.)

Debian Installation :: "permanently" Change The Mount Point?

Feb 11, 2011

I recently installed Squeeze and it was simple and is running great. I have a usb fat32 drive that shares data on 3 partitions with winxp. None are listed in fstab. They all are mounted in /media.2 partitions, Video and Music, are shown in gparted as mounted by their volume labels, which is what I want; eg /media/MUSIC. The DATA volume is mounted by its' uuid. This is how it is displayed on my desktop. The other 2 volumes display the way I want: MUSIC and VIDEO. I have changed the mount point in /media to the label name:/media/DATA but it returns to its' uuid after reboot. How can I change it to display the label name? It works fine, but I have a need to "tidy up" my desktop.
