Ubuntu Installation :: Finding Packages That Are Not On An LTS Point Release CD?

Mar 17, 2010

A while ago I posted this thread, with no responses:[URL].. I deploy into an environment that for "security" reasons cannot be kept up to date with wherever the ubuntu archive is up to (with awareness that this is avoiding security updates...). It is a sealed system not connected to the internet. I'm working with the 8.04.1 LTS, and my customer is in an 'if it ain't broke don't change it' frame of mind w.r.t. moving to 8.04.4. My main problem comes in two variations: 1. Some packages my runtime system depends on are not distributed on the 8.04.1 DVD, but were available in the full ubuntu archive at the time of the point release (and still are, in an up-to-date form). My concern is that if I take the 8.04.4-ish version of a package it will not work correctly with an otherwise 8.04.1 system. In general I am expecting that it *might*, and the versioned dependencies it has on other packages will be loose enough. 2. Some packages my build system (which produces what I put onto the runtime system) depend on are also not on the DVD. So almost a repeat of 1 above, except that I am generally running afoul of strictly-versioned dependencies (the -dev version of a lib package depends on the matching lib package having exactly the same version). If the non-dev lib package is on the DVD, but is not the same version as the -dev package I have from an archive mirror taken just before the 8.04.1 release, I believe I'm screwed?

So my two questions are: a. Is there such a thing as a copy of the full ubuntu archive taken at the exact time the 8.04.1 LTS was released? I think that would solve most of my problems.

Debian Installation :: Jessie 8.1 - Mirror Does Not Support Specified Release

Jun 17, 2015

I am doing a new Debian install on an older Dell laptop (Latitude D520, but that should not matter). I downloaded the net install .iso, burned it to disk, and ran it. Everything was progressing like any other installation I have done until I was asked to pick the mirror. I chose ftp.us.debian.org like I normally do and it was rejected. When I checked the output on virtual console 4, I am seeing the message "mirror does not support the specified release (jessie)."

I tried a bunch of random mirrors, including international ones, and they all give me that message.

Debian Installation :: "permanently" Change The Mount Point?

Feb 11, 2011

I recently installed Squeeze and it was simple and is running great. I have a usb fat32 drive that shares data on 3 partitions with winxp. None are listed in fstab. They all are mounted in /media.2 partitions, Video and Music, are shown in gparted as mounted by their volume labels, which is what I want; eg /media/MUSIC. The DATA volume is mounted by its' uuid. This is how it is displayed on my desktop. The other 2 volumes display the way I want: MUSIC and VIDEO. I have changed the mount point in /media to the label name:/media/DATA but it returns to its' uuid after reboot. How can I change it to display the label name? It works fine, but I have a need to "tidy up" my desktop.

downgrade my squeeze installation to kernel 2.6.32-29 (I think I have -30 now).

- what is the proper way to downgrade to that version of the kernel (I got my current kernel version when I installed squeeze few days ago and the official repo does not seem to have the -29 version anymore)?

- how to prevent that future automatic updates "upgrade" me again to the non-working version?

I installed and removed Gnome3 and reinstalled Gnome2.x (epic fail and stupidity) and in the process I have lost audio. I tried to install whatever possible package was removed by studying /var/log/dpkg.log. Debian Configuration :: Downgrade The Kernel Patch Version?

Aug 31, 2011

When a real kernel version is upgraded, like say 2.6.32 to 2.6.38, the old kernel is left intact and is ready to be used in case of a problem with a new one, but when only a debian patch version is updated, like 2.6.32-30 to 2.6.32-35, the old kernel is replaced with a new one. More then this, aptitude shows that older version is not in repository either, so how do you supposed to revert back? Well, i did found -30 in apt cache when i got hit by a nasty regression in -35 yesterday, but what if i had cleaned apt cache?

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Downgrade To 10.04

Oct 16, 2010

how is it possible to downgrade to the Ubuntu 10.04 from Ubuntu 10.10?

I have two reasons for doing it:

1. My internal microphone stopped working in new kernel (ThinkPad Egde 13')

2. New Ubuntu's look and feel is ugly.

Probably this problem may be solved with installing the theme, but it seems not to affect the font, which is the most terrible thing in new release's design. Is it possible to have the 10.04's look and feel here in 10.10?

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Downgrade To 10.10

Apr 29, 2011

When you get to the login screen at the bottom there is a box where you can select "Ubuntu Classic" and that will take you to a Gnome 2.3 desktop.I just updated to 11.04 which is so disappointing. It is like I am coming from multi-thread world back to single-thread world. Any in one workspace, you can only do one thing: either surfing internet or something else, but you cannot do both at the same time.On 10.10, we can do multiple things simultaneously and we can switch between each other easily. Now the good feature of 10.10 is completely discarded.

Debian Multimedia :: Perl Base Downgrade - Packages Couldn't Be Installed

May 5, 2011

I have debian squeeze (and a bit of sid, actually). I wanted to install the newest pidgin, so I added at sources.list the sid repository, and tried to install pidgin, but it needed the newest perl-base 5.12.3-6 (from 5.10.1-17). So I let it upgrade. after that I realized that my mysql server isn't running, and actually this is my problem. So I tried reinstalling it, home:/home/amalia# apt-get install mysql-server-5.1. Ubuntu Installation :: Downgrade Back From 10.04 LTS To 8.04 LTS?

Nov 5, 2010

I upgraded from ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 LTS using the update manager and the result is that ubuntu boots into a black screen. Unfortunately I did not test 10.4 before with the Desktop CD, which I tried now, with the same result: black screen. So most likely a hardware screen card issue... which I did really not expect since 8.04 was running very well and the update was coming from the update mananger. Never change a running system. I assume my only chance is to re-install version 8.04 with the iso CD. But before doing so, is there any must-not to keep an eye on?

Ubuntu Installation :: Downgrade From 11.04 Alpha To 10.10?

Mar 12, 2011

how/if I can downgrade my dual-boot partition (win-7/11.04) to 10.10 without having to reformat the entire disk?

Can I use the same partition I installed the alpha 11.04 on to install 10.10 and save myself a lot of work?

Is it possible to simply reformat the Ubuntu Linux partition and re-install 10.10 there while preserving my Windows 7 installation?

Can I keep the newer GRUB boot loader for 11.04 (I like it better), or will I be forced to downgrade that as well?

I just tried the alpha, and I can't use it. It's still too green, so I want to go back to 10.10 the easiest way possible, so I'd need a little detail on the process of using the advanced partition features (if this is even possible).

Fedora Installation :: Downgrade F11 To F10 After Failed Upgrade?

Nov 12, 2009

I recently installed Fedora 10, having chosen that version in order to be able to use the packages created by the Planet CCRMA group for doing audio recording (they don't have F11 packages ready yet, AFAIK). Last weekend I got a prompt to upgrade my system, and I naively accepted it, not even realizing that it was an upgrade to F11.

The upgrade didn't work, for reasons that I still don't know (probably a video driver issue), but since I know the F10 installation worked, and Planet CCRMA is not up to F11 yet, I'd just like to downgrade myself back to F10.

Can I just re-install Fedora 10 from the DVD I used before, or will the F11 installation cause problems? I haven't really done any work that I mind losing, so I'm not too concerned about overwriting my previous installation.
