I have a mount called on /home for /dev/sda12..I want to mount /dev/sda12 onto /backup..I tried to do this by changing things in the fstab file i.e. i replaced /home with /backup. This change caused boot up problems and I had to change my fstab file back to get going again.

The question I have is about where would be the typical location to auto mount this partition? Which would it be normal to go for:
1. /backup/
2. /media/backup/
3. /mnt/backup/
4. /home/chris/backup/
i just installed the new vision of Ubuntu 11.04 , i created 3 partitions 1 for swap, the other one for / and the last one for /home, but by mistake instead of selecting /home i chose /boot, and i want to change it now, i already tried changing my FSTAB and i ended up with a corrupted Desktop when i restarted. i had to change my FSTAB using VI command here you have a copy of my fstab:

As a precaution to protect my home folder contents when I reninstall ubuntu if need arises I intend to change my home folder location to a mounted ntfs partition in my HDD. How can I do it the GUI way? Like in windows the "My Documents" location can be changed by going to "My Document" properties and entering the new location.

I have set up an encrypted ext4 partition on a new external USB HDD. When I plug it in, some sequence of a daemons and scripts cheerfully puts up a dialog to ask me for my pass phrase and then creates a mount point and mounts the drive in /media. I'd like to know how to configure this process to change the name of the mount point (right now it's an unwieldy hex string), it's permissions and ownership. I'm sure this is straightforward, but I just don't what the relevant programs and files are.

I managed somehow to create a script to make some backup of files on server and TAR it and then FTP the archive to another location FTP server and then emails result.
It also measures time needed to complete it and deletes archive older than XX days (set in find -mtime +20) and makes incremental backup every weekday and FULL on Sundays (which suits me bcoz no heavy load).
Files for TAR to include and exclude are in txt files listed each line separate name:

I recently installed Squeeze and it was simple and is running great. I have a usb fat32 drive that shares data on 3 partitions with winxp. None are listed in fstab. They all are mounted in /media.2 partitions, Video and Music, are shown in gparted as mounted by their volume labels, which is what I want; eg /media/MUSIC. The DATA volume is mounted by its' uuid. This is how it is displayed on my desktop. The other 2 volumes display the way I want: MUSIC and VIDEO. I have changed the mount point in /media to the label name:/media/DATA but it returns to its' uuid after reboot. How can I change it to display the label name? It works fine, but I have a need to "tidy up" my desktop.

So for example, if I were to change an OpenOffice document in a specific folder on my Desktop it would be replicated/duplicated in real time. For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).
On SUSE 11.2 when a CD or DVD is automounted (in the /media directory) it appears that the mount point chosen for the disk always has extra blanks at the end of the mount.
For example, if the label on the CD was DISK-001, the mount point chosen by SUSE is
/media/DISK-001 /
In 11.1 (and earlier) the mount point would have been
/media/DISK-001/
I'm assuming that the trailing blanks are filling in unused or blank chars at the end of the CD label.
Is there any way to change this annoying behavior? I much prefer NOT to have trailing blanks in the mount point.
I have servers installed with RHEL 4 2.6.9-89.0.9 ELsmp. I tried using uuid and label in /etc/fstab to automount usb drives to mountpoints that I specify after reboot. Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 1720 running Ubuntu v10.04 with a wireless card.My desktop is a Dell Optiflex running WinXP.The desktop is connected via ethernet cable to a Linksys wireless router. Certain folders on the desktop are set for sharing. Up until early last week I was able to access the desktop folders from the laptop with no issues.Suddenly I am now getting this error "Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share" whenever I try to access the desktop folders from the laptop.I suspect an upgrade is the culprit, but not sure.

I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. View 9 Replies View Relatedrecently i made a backup of my home directory in 10.10 before reinstalling 10.10. again.This time I chose to manually define the partitions (50GB Root, 25GB Swap, 325GB Home)Now i wish to migrate the old home into the newly installed home, which is on a separate partition.I have found the following documentation URL...Still, as a beginner I am not quite sure about the necessary steps to perform.As the new home is located on a separate partition is it possible to simple delete all directories there and copy all directories from old home to new home with rsync?
Do I have to install all the software that corresponds to the old home first followed by migrating home or first migrating home followed by installing the software such as thunderbird, Texlive2010 etc.Guess that migration should take place at a later stage. Otherwise my old profile files from firefox and thunderbird will be overwriten by new ones?
I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?
I have my webserver with cpanel , and I have a FTP location. I wanna backup to the FTP location directly, because I dont have enough space on the server to back up first then rsync over the data, I have this script I need a little help in getting it to backup directly to the ftp location , or is there a simpler way .

I have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.
