Since my upgrade from Debian 7.8.0 to Debian 8.0
Happy to get a lot of my computers now working fine with Debian 8 ...
This one embed a Silicon Integrated Systems Video card [1039:6330]
This computer with an Athlon 64 2800+ and 1GB of DDR RAM, destined to be a BOINC worker until the end of his life, had the chance to upgrade with a Debian 7.8.0 (LXDE) few times ago (after long years of Windows XP services). And the only thing I had to set was the wireless card (firmware-b43-installer, adduser me netdev, and it was good) and it was perfecly working. Apt-get was giving to me creepy old versions of software, so it was the only thing that disturbed me, but let's go for the brand new Debian 8.0
But now with Debian 8.0, the graphics are bad, resolution is bad too.
I first tried with "lightdm" and "mate-desktop-environment" because of the LXDE icons that were fine on every computer with 7.8.0 but distorted and cropped with Debian 8 on every computer too (how is it simply possible for the mainteners to find it ok ). Seeing that my SiS card was not working well, I tried to reinstall everything with Debian 8 and LXDE as before... and hope icons will be repaired soon. But the problem with my video card is still present.
Then, I realised that on my Debian 7.8.0 computers, xserver-xorg-video-sis is available and installed. But not available anymore on Debian 8.0

I am running Debian 7.0 Wheezy amd64...I installed Debian's nvidia driver earlier but I was having a few issues with OpenGL. So I removed those drivers using "apt-get remove nvidia*" and installed proprietry NVIDIA's driver from their website. Now the issue is, my apt-get/synaptic does not work anymore because it is trying to remove xserver-xorg-video-nvidia and failing to do so.
Code: Select allThe following packages will be REMOVED:

I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former. In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.
Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attached? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.

I'm trying to install Kubuntu 9.10 on my machine (I had the same problem with Kubuntu 9.04). The machine is:
- Core 2 Quad 6600
- Nvidia 7600 GS
- Two disk seagate 500 in mirroring raid software
When I try to install Kubuntu, after disk partition, my system dosn't see the CD. He tell me to insert disk into drive but I doesn't touch it. I resolved this mounting an external hard disk into /cdrom. After this, the installation continues until the step "select and install software". At this step, the installation procedure tell me an error. During this error, in the other console, I've this:

PROBLEM: My computer has an nvidia video card. I'd like to remove the packages that support ati and radeon. When I try to remove xserver-xorg-video-ati or xserver-xorg-video-ati, the package manager wants to remove xserver-xorg-video-all.
QUESTION: Is it safe to remove xserver-xorg-video-all? Obviously, I want to keep support for my nvideo card.

I have Lenovo 3000 n200. I'm new in debian, but it's great to me! I wan't to stay with this distro, but i Can't upgrade this to testing or unstable version. Lenny have too old packagges for me. All versions of squeeze (downloaded or upgrade from lenny) is broken. I can't run xorg. For about 2 weeks i'm serching for answer and i only found that this is xserver-xorg-conf. That's true this is the package that is broken, but cannot install this.
When i upgade system the synaptic package manager write me one package is broken (xserver-xorg-conf), so i delete it and install one more time. This same problem. So i downloaded and i have this same problem. When i restart system i cannot run xserver and gnome.

I experienced this problem on Friday but didn't have time to write a warning.A couple of days ago, xserver-xorg-core 2:1.10.2-1+b1 reached Testing before a corresponding dependency (recommendation), thus breaking the hardware acceleration. The issue is (better) described here (1) by a developer.A possible solution is to keep (2) the previous version (2:1.10.2-1) or, if you already installed the faulty one, to grab the former version from Debian Snapshots (3) and downgrade the package.Because the error was a simple path change, one could also keep the new version of xserver-xorg-core and link the DRI Mesa modules to the directories that are inspected now (as described here [4]).The issue has already been addressed (5) and a new version should appear in Testing shortly.[URL]

I need a video driver for SIS M760GX for an ACER Aspire 5000 laptop.
Everywhere I've looked it says to run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Supposedly, this is supposed to open a window where I can change settings. However it does nothing and just returns me to the prompt.

Just did an upgrade in Wheezy and found my synaptics touchpad borked. Easy enough fix, though.aptitude install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-devRebooted (probably could have just modprobed) and all is wellSo, I guess the standard xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is undergoing some weird changes at the moment.

I just purchased an Acer Aspire V5-123 notebook with AMD processor and graphic and installed Debian 7.6 (stable) on it. first of all, I had to install a newer (3.14.0.bpo.1-amd64) kernel image to get the ethernet card working. Then, I got problem with Xorg not starting.
Here is the error lines from /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
Code: Select all(EE) VESA(0): V_BIOS address 0x0 out of range
...
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
and this is the output by issuing lspci:
Code: Select alllspci -nn | grep VGA:
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device [1002:9834]
I installed the libgl1-mesa-dri, xserver-xorg-video-ati, and firmware-linux-nonfree packages, as suggested by AtiHowTo from Debian Wiki, but the problem still persists and the last one (firmware-linux-nonfree) actually caused the notebook to freeze on boot. so, I removed it.

When I try to install on a Dell Dimension 8110, After I hit enter to install, very small green text appears up top that says "undefined video mode" than a number that I can't make out, and another line that says something about hitting <SPACE> to continue. However, hitting space does nothing and the installation hangs indefinitely.

Though this was just a problem I was having with "amarok," however, It has come to my attention on "Ktorrent" as well. What is the connection? They are both based on the KDE desktop environment.Any "KDE" based program (GTK+?) will crash my GUI (im not sure if its called xserver or xorg or whatever). How do I go about diagnosing this problem? All the other programs run without crashing the computer, however, when I run "amarok" and "ktorrent" (both KDE bassed) my GUI crashes and restarts back to the login screen.

I just did a net install on an old powerpc G4 and it seems pretty successful.except i cant change any of the monitor settings from the control panel in gnome (or LXDE)its showing 'not recognised' and only allows 768 x 1024 in very restricted colour.I dont think there is a hardware problem:
- the monitor is a generic old CRT which has worked fine with everything before this.
- the display card is an AGP 32Mb - original with this G4 and was working.
- the computer works great in Mac OS10.3 - (but OS10.3 doesnt support flash or up to date web browser any more, hence trying debian).
i have searched debian forums and various sites, but i couldnt find a fix. It looked like i should edit xorg.conf file but I am not able to find it. I looked in /etc/X11 - but not there.could someone tell me please, do i need to find xorg.conf?

I'm somewhat spoiled by standard installations that do it all. This time I'm doing it more manually.I've installed a sid guest vm. I want to give it a graphical face, so for a change I've chosen the lightweight xfce.Only I'm missing the xorg.conf. I've installed xdm, so I have a login. However, it can't get in from there. It hasn't yet generated an xorg.conf in /etc/X11.Short of copying one, which I suppose I might try, How do you prompt debian to generate and configure the xorg.conf from scratch?Currently, I have
root@sid:~# tail /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Using GNOME2.X (default) and Fluxbox on ZorinOS4(upgraded from ubuntu10.10 to 11.04) When I boot up everything goes fine right up until the splash screen. Once I get to that, Screen goes black for 3 seconds or so, Then the command line pops up, Asks me for LOGIN: and PASSWORD:, and after I enter that it starts fsck then says something like:
Code:
/dev/sda5 mounted - sda5 mounted 22 times without check, Forcing check-- sda5 CLEAN Xnumberofblocks/Ynumberof blocks...
Error: cannot start Xserver
If needed I can reboot my machine and write the whole thing out and post it back. sda5 shows it is filesystem, ext4, 25g ,mounted at /,Partition type Linux(0x83), partition flags: - SO after it does a force check it brings me back to hevithan:$ ... I tried typing fluxbox to run that instead of GNOME and it says Error: failed to launch. Xserver is running.. So I reboot, and select: ubuntu-linux version(recovery mode). Look at the startup log it says what I already got in command: Failed to boot XServer is already running. So I select Restart X and it works fine after that.
Things I have downloaded/installed recently:
*Used additional drivers to enable propitiatory drivers.
*Thunderbird
*Simdock (Which I didn't like) so...
*Docky
*A comic book reader (I forget the name but it was in the repos) and a few upgrades to software/programs I already had.
Why is X trying to start 2 times? Why is it forcing FSCK every time? Could anything I have downloaded changed my GRUB or Kernel info and confused the system?

I recently installed debian on my ibook G4, but when I start up the computer, it doesn't boot into Xorg. When I tried to start Xorg, it says that it is not installed. How would I install it, and how would I start it? When I do the apt-get install xorg, it doesn't work. Right now I'm running ubuntu on it, but I really want just plain debian, as I really dont need all of the bells and whistles that Ubuntu offers. I just need something to do schoolwork on (I'm a highschool sophmore), and I don't want to use OS X for that as I like linux better (specifically debian and ubuntu).

I'm trying to install Xorg manually in Squeeze on my IBM X30 Thinkpad with intel graphics (it works in Lenny). I used aptitude and installed "xorg" and "fluxbox", but when I restart my computer I get a blank screen, instead of the console login request that I was expecting. (Note: I did not install any login managers). So exactly what happens is that the screen goes black (just backlight on)during boot process. Once I'm at the black screen doing CTRL+ALT+Backspac, Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Alt+F[1-7] will not result in anything.
I tried booting with the single user mode, but same result, so the only way I could acess my log-files was by using a systemrescue-CD. What I find odd about this is that I cant find any configuration files at all. No xorg.conf anywhere in /etc, /etc/X11, nor in /home. I don't even have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folder.Am I expected to write these by myself? And if Xorg is the source of my troubles, why is it starting by itself, without any installed login managers? Xorg not working is one thing, but not even being able to access the console, or log in to my computer makes it rather difficult to search for errors.
