How can I install xserver-xorg without all the unnecessary drivers for video cards / peripherals I do not have on my system?
View 2 RepliesI am running Debian 7.0 Wheezy amd64...I installed Debian's nvidia driver earlier but I was having a few issues with OpenGL. So I removed those drivers using "apt-get remove nvidia*" and installed proprietry NVIDIA's driver from their website.Now the issue is, my apt-get/synaptic does not work anymore because it is trying to remove xserver-xorg-video-nvidia and failing to do so.

This one embed a Silicon Integrated Systems Video card [1039:6330]
This computer with an Athlon 64 2800+ and 1GB of DDR RAM, destined to be a BOINC worker until the end of his life, had the chance to upgrade with a Debian 7.8.0 (LXDE) few times ago (after long years of Windows XP services). And the only thing I had to set was the wireless card (firmware-b43-installer, adduser me netdev, and it was good) and it was perfecly working. Apt-get was giving to me creepy old versions of software, so it was the only thing that disturbed me, but let's go for the brand new Debian 8.0
But now with Debian 8.0, the graphics are bad, resolution is bad too.
I first tried with "lightdm" and "mate-desktop-environment" because of the LXDE icons that were fine on every computer with 7.8.0 but distorted and cropped with Debian 8 on every computer too (how is it simply possible for the mainteners to find it ok ). Seeing that my SiS card was not working well, I tried to reinstall everything with Debian 8 and LXDE as before... and hope icons will be repaired soon. But the problem with my video card is still present.
Then, I realised that on my Debian 7.8.0 computers, xserver-xorg-video-sis is available and installed. But not available anymore on Debian 8.0
I installed the debian 6.0 netinstall iso, now installing the xserver-xorg but get a lot of this error messages:
xserver-xorg-video-rendition: Depends: xorg-video-abi-6.0 which is a virtual package.

I have Lenovo 3000 n200. I'm new in debian, but it's great to me! I wan't to stay with this distro, but i Can't upgrade this to testing or unstable version. Lenny have too old packagges for me. All versions of squeeze (downloaded or upgrade from lenny) is broken. I can't run xorg. For about 2 weeks i'm serching for answer and i only found that this is xserver-xorg-conf. That's true this is the package that is broken, but cannot install this.
When i upgade system the synaptic package manager write me one package is broken (xserver-xorg-conf), so i delete it and install one more time. This same problem. So i downloaded and i have this same problem. When i restart system i cannot run xserver and gnome.
I have dell inspiron-1545 laptop.I installed rhel5(downloaded from torrent for free),kernel (2.6.18-8el5xen).i got a driver cd from dell containing rhel drivers for audio,video,network.i tried to install those drivers but could not.it asked for dkms 2.0 which i installed.but even now also some errors are coming(like dependencies missing etc.).so no internet ,no sound,no video on my laptop.

While trying to solve the problem indicated in another thread [URL] .... I realised that I do not have the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Kate opened normally with root permissions.
Currently I have a Nvidia card but I am using nouveau drivers.
My question is: installing the Nvidia drivers (following the guide in [URL] .....) would fix these Xorg issues?
I had troubles with nvidia drivers in other distros....
PROBLEM: My computer has an nvidia video card. I'd like to remove the packages that support ati and radeon. When I try to remove xserver-xorg-video-ati or xserver-xorg-video-ati, the package manager wants to remove xserver-xorg-video-all.
QUESTION: Is it safe to remove xserver-xorg-video-all? Obviously, I want to keep support for my nvideo card.
For those of us who were stung last year by ATI's decision to drop support for <= R500 series cards from their closed source, or proprietary driver (known as the FGLRX driver), we are now forced to use the opensource ATI XORG driver. This is not as bad as it sounds, as in doing so, ATI has released a lot of the hardware specs on these older cards and the opensource driver has improved dramatically in the last year as a result.
Ubuntu includes both the ATI and the FGLRX driver install capacities in recent releases (since Intrepid(?)). If one can install the FGLRX driver, you should be able to do this by choosing System>Administration>Hardware Drivers and choosing to activate the ATI drivers; or you can manually install them using this guide: [URL]
However, if you have a card that is or below the R500 series (i.e. not R600+) DO NOT install the FGLRX drivers - you will break your X server (video display). If you don't know what series chipset you have, try the following:

These are fairly easy to remove (as described on the site); just remove the PPA from your Software Sources and downgrade the drivers.
I have a video card (Nvidia) in my computer that I want in another computer. I am going to be using the onboard graphics instead. I am running Lucid 32bit.
When I start up using the onboard graphics, the BIOS screen appears, then I see the normal underscore "_" flashing in the top left corner, but when that is done, my screen turns black and the monitor shuts off. I tried running a live USB and everything was fine so it's not a problem with the graphics card compatibility. I think I have to try booting into the command line and typing

but I don't know how to enter the command line. Is that what I have to do or is there a different way?
Here goes the problem: I have a Amilo M7400 notebook with an Intel 82852/82855 GME video card, and X is a bit uncompatible with it.I've tried using the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but when i start Xserver, it hangs hard in a blank screen. I can't open a new terminal and control+alt+backspace won't work.
what can i do? is there a log file for X which details the initialization of it?

Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attached? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.
I would like to know the best way to swap out video cards from ati to nvidia. For example. In windows, I would uninstall the driver, switch the cards, boot into a low VGA windows session and install the new drivers, reboot done.
In sues, I'm wondering if I uninstall the drivers, after rebooting I might loose my Gnome desktop. And I guess at that point I'd be looking at a blinking cursor?
I experienced this problem on Friday but didn't have time to write a warning.A couple of days ago, xserver-xorg-core 2:1.10.2-1+b1 reached Testing before a corresponding dependency (recommendation), thus breaking the hardware acceleration. The issue is (better) described here (1) by a developer.A possible solution is to keep (2) the previous version (2:1.10.2-1) or, if you already installed the faulty one, to grab the former version from Debian Snapshots (3) and downgrade the package.Because the error was a simple path change, one could also keep the new version of xserver-xorg-core and link the DRI Mesa modules to the directories that are inspected now (as described here [4]).The issue has already been addressed (5) and a new version should appear in Testing shortly.[URL]

Easy enough fix, though.aptitude install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-devRebooted (probably could have just modprobed) and all is wellSo, I guess the standard xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is undergoing some weird changes at the moment.

Running GNU/kFreeBSD debian 8.1-1-amd64 and base system working. Can not get X or xrandr to co-operate and use proper resolution of 1680x1050. I believe the basis of this is that it using the VESA drivers and instead should be using the INTEL drivers.
I have no 'pkg_add' for ports, plus obviously no Debian repos will help for this .... unless there are some specific kFreeBSD repos I dont know about? I can post more details on the system, but am hoping that there are other options besides compiling. I can do that if need be, but not even sure which one to use. Will these work on this system? My PCI-E Nvidia card died, and I want to use the onboard video from my H55 chipset, which Windows identifies as "Intel 5 Series/3400 Series". This is on 10.04 LTS.I did 'apt-get purge nvidia*' followed by adding "intel" as the driver in xorg.conf, but on boot I get the message:

I run an old Toshiba Satellite M35x S114 Laptop with Debian Testing, it always runned smoothly - although it IS testing . Since the latest update to kernel 2.6.32 , the X server just freezes. The init goes all the way to gdm, and then a blank screen , no mouse pointer, no way to get out of this screen (not CTRL+ALT+BACSPACE not CTRL+ALT+F1 / F2 ... etc) just a hard reset.
I can boot to the older .30 kernel with absolutely no problem, gdm starts normally login successfull (as I am able to write this on the reffered machine and all).

I have been trying to install fglrx drivers for my ATI card with Debian testing (x86) but without any luck. I have tried what it says here http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary but I only come up with a blank screen (and also invoke-rc.d gdm stop does not work either?) I have also followed the directions at [URL]....html and that doesn't work either (make error 127). I must be doing something totally wrong.
View 6 Replies View RelatedLike a guy earlier today report a problem with Opensuse 11.2 working fine on his machine but 11.3 is not. I have somewhat the same problem. The default installation freezes randomly. I have seen this error before with Intel video cards but never with NVIDIA. Right now, I'm using VESA in failsafe mode and trying to install some drivers from this repo.
I'll try and find a fix for this. (Hope their is one)BTW, can anyone confirm when the official drivers for NVIDIA cards are coming out?
I'm having problems configuring a second video card in Debian 7.4 on GNOME. I've tried running Xorg -configure but that errors. When I run xrandr that only seems to pick up 1 screen.

The current effect is that the second screen seems to fire up and display a debian logo, and I can move the mouse pointer on to it, but I can't place any windows on there. Also, every time I log out and log back in, GNOME creates an additional instance of the menus (I now have 3 "Applications" and 3 "Places"). It sort of suggests that it is trying to use multiple monitors, but getting it wrong.
how to install alsa drivers along with Asus xonar dgx sound card. I followed these instructions. URL....And until "Setting up modprobe and kmod support" instructions were clear. I should put something in /etc/modules, but I dont down exactly what.

When I put sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg into terminal then hit the return key it asks for my password which I put in, it then seems to do nothing it doesn't open the xserver page to make any changes.
