View 8 RepliesI installed the debian 6.0 netinstall iso, now installing the xserver-xorg but get a lot of this error messages:
xserver-xorg-video-rendition: Depends: xorg-video-abi-6.0 which is a virtual package.
Now I tried installing the KDE destop enviremont, the install went just fine but when I try to log into KDE I see the startup screen for a second then everything goes dark.It stays that way in the background i think the desktop is there because the mouse cursor is there, I can move it around but that's all.Does KDE work differently and so can the different xserver be the cause of KDE not working?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had my Lenovo T60 laptop working on Ubuntu 10.10 with visual effects and everything except for one thing the screen would flicker constantly I began to fiddle around with the Xserver trying to fix the flickering but I somehow regressed and am now unable to use visual effects. The Xserver fails to load any devices when I try to start it. Included is a copy of my xorg.conf file.

I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former.In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files�47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.
Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attached? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.

I'm trying to install Kubuntu 9.10 on my machine (I had the same problem with Kubuntu 9.04). The machine is:
- Core 2 Quad 6600
- Nvidia 7600 GS
- Two disk seagate 500 in mirroring raid software
When I try to install Kubuntu, after disk partition, my system dosn't see the CD. He tell me to insert disk into drive but I doesn't touch it. I resolved this mounting an external hard disk into /cdrom. After this, the installation continues until the step "select and install software". I'm just wondering what the options are if one wants to try a 'newer' kernel and/or XServer version.
Either on an installed system or virtual machine (for e.g., Squeeze in VirtualBox).
On an installed system, on Debian Sqeeze (or Testing), if one wants to upgrade to 2.6.36 kernel and/or XServer 1.9, what are the options? I noticed that 1.9 is available in experimental so one has to enable and load the experimental package repository?
As for the kernel, I guess there's a few options? One includes installing the liquorix kernel? Best choice/alternative is compiling?

I have installed Debian Lenny today from netinst cd. It all went good, hen I installed some basic utilities, daemons and libraries like dbus, hal, libgtk2.0, libasound2, alsa-utils, htop (for checking system load). Then I installed X.org with commandaptitude install -R xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input-mouse xserver-xorg-input-kbd xserver-xorg-video-intel xinit xterm twmI used -R to pull less dependencies. When I ran startx X Server started, and I got on twm. But when I checked on htop, my memory usage was 175MB, and before starting X Server it was only 25MB. Why is X Server using so much memory on Lenny? I also have Debian Sqeeze on a different partition, it uses so much memory with all gnome services running+ iceweasel and amsn.

My notebook thinkpad w500 has two video cards, intel / radeon. When i test some 3d games by wine or some videos by mpv using dri_prime=1 to dynamic enable radeon card, the game/video window always tearing, see bug report [URL] ....
So I try to start second xserver directly use radeon card, command like this:
$xinit /usr/bin/openbox-session -- :1 -ac -configdir radeon (/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config already changed to allowed_users=anybody)
I put 20-radeon.conf into /etc/X11/radeon, which is:

If i just put 20-intel.conf into /etc/X11/radeon (just use intel IDG), the second xserver runs ok. Just using radeon DIS the second xserver started without any conntected output. run DISPLAY=:1 xrandr could confirm that, all disconnetted, so it's black screen on second xserver vtn, and default xserver vt7 still ok.
Am i missing something to config second xserver using radeon DIS, or it's not possible...

This computer with an Athlon 64 2800+ and 1GB of DDR RAM, destined to be a BOINC worker until the end of his life, had the chance to upgrade with a Debian 7.8.0 (LXDE) few times ago (after long years of Windows XP services). And the only thing I had to set was the wireless card (firmware-b43-installer, adduser me netdev, and it was good) and it was perfecly working. Apt-get was giving to me creepy old versions of software, so it was the only thing that disturbed me, but let's go for the brand new Debian 8.0
But now with Debian 8.0, the graphics are bad, resolution is bad too.
I first tried with "lightdm" and "mate-desktop-environment" because of the LXDE icons that were fine on every computer with 7.8.0 but distorted and cropped with Debian 8 on every computer too (how is it simply possible for the mainteners to find it ok ). Seeing that my SiS card was not working well, I tried to reinstall everything with Debian 8 and LXDE as before... and hope icons will be repaired soon. But the problem with my video card is still present.
Then, I realised that on my Debian 7.8.0 computers, xserver-xorg-video-sis is available and installed. But not available anymore on Debian 8.0
I've just installed Debian Testing XFCE, and mouse & keyboard don't respond to any inputs. The keyboard works just fine in the Recovery Shell, that's why I suspect a problem with the XServer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI run an old Toshiba Satellite M35x S114 Laptop with Debian Testing, it always runned smoothly - although it IS testing . Since the latest update to kernel 2.6.32 , the X server just freezes. The init goes all the way to gdm, and then a blank screen , no mouse pointer, no way to get out of this screen (not CTRL+ALT+BACSPACE not CTRL+ALT+F1 / F2 ... etc) just a hard reset.
I can boot to the older .30 kernel with absolutely no problem, gdm starts normally login successfull (as I am able to write this on the reffered machine and all).

I have Lenovo 3000 n200. I'm new in debian, but it's great to me! I wan't to stay with this distro, but i Can't upgrade this to testing or unstable version. Lenny have too old packagges for me. All versions of squeeze (downloaded or upgrade from lenny) is broken. I can't run xorg. For about 2 weeks i'm serching for answer and i only found that this is xserver-xorg-conf. That's true this is the package that is broken, but cannot install this.
When i upgade system the synaptic package manager write me one package is broken (xserver-xorg-conf), so i delete it and install one more time. This same problem. So i downloaded and i have this same problem. When i restart system i cannot run xserver and gnome.
I recently installed the Nvidia proprietary drivers and I have a problem starting gdm. Xserver fails, only throwing a warning concerned to xkbcomp, something about ralt having two symbols... but just a warning anyway. Then, after waiting the screen flash between the tty and a black screen a few times;
i'm on the tty, from where I can "startx" without problem. I tried using the nv driver and gdm worked.. so i think it has relation with the nvidia drivers... I experienced this problem on Friday but didn't have time to write a warning.A couple of days ago, xserver-xorg-core 2:1.10.2-1+b1 reached Testing before a corresponding dependency (recommendation), thus breaking the hardware acceleration. The issue is (better) described here (1) by a developer.A possible solution is to keep (2) the previous version (2:1.10.2-1) or, if you already installed the faulty one, to grab the former version from Debian Snapshots (3) and downgrade the package.Because the error was a simple path change, one could also keep the new version of xserver-xorg-core and link the DRI Mesa modules to the directories that are inspected now (as described here [4]).The issue has already been addressed (5) and a new version should appear in Testing shortly.[URL]
View 8 Replies View Relatedxserver-common (2:1.10.4-1) was upgrade today in Sid to xserver-common (2:1.11.0-1) breaking my nvidia driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-280.13.run). There is a temporary fix as showen below.

I am running Debian 7.0 Wheezy amd64...I installed Debian's nvidia driver earlier but I was having a few issues with OpenGL. So I removed those drivers using "apt-get remove nvidia*" and installed proprietry NVIDIA's driver from their website.Now the issue is, my apt-get/synaptic does not work anymore because it is trying to remove xserver-xorg-video-nvidia and failing to do so.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI use 3 computers attached to a kvm switch (not the hypervisor) and this works fine w/ windows xp and ubuntu 9.04 and earlier. However I am having a problem w/ Fedora 12. It seems that it cannot read the EDID block, so I am not able to set the display above 800x600. There is no xorg.conf file, so I had one generated by Xorg -configure :1. I also tried using the modeline instructions, but the Xserver would not start until I removed modeline. I have tried adding to Section "Screen"

but it seems that this is ignored. how can I get the Xserver to set display modes above 800x600 when it cannot read EDID (thru a kvm switch) and it seems to be ignoring settings in xorg.conf?
I upgraded to 10.04 and when trying to boot, the computer would hang at the splash screen. Going into recovery mode showed nothing in the log files. The Xorg and gdm logs were zero bytes but had the proper timestamp. I tried and tried, but could not get it to boot until I removed the nvidia-current package. Then the computer will boot, but the screen is partially corrupted with just a blue background. I can hit enter, then type my password and I can actually login, but I can't see a thing. I can cycle through the resolutions with Ctrl +, but the screen just still has a blue background and nothing else. Trying to boot in failsafe X mode gives the same screen. I tried putting the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but no change.
I've tried the i915.modeset=0 boot option. I've tried the "xforcevesa" boot option, but nothing will give me a readable screen. As soon as I re-installed the nvidia-current package and ran nvidia-xconfigure, the problem came back and it hangs again.At this point, I'm stuck. I would settle for a plain VGA screen at this point, but I can't even seem to get that. I've read several posts here with similar problems and tried every solution put forth, I think, but have not found a solution.When the upgrade wanted to install the new /etc/default/grub, I kept my old one. I compared the two files at the time, but I didn't see anything new, but maybe I missed something. What new items if any does the upgrade put into /etc/default/grub?
Just did an upgrade in Wheezy and found my synaptics touchpad borked. Easy enough fix, though.aptitude install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-devRebooted (probably could have just modprobed) and all is wellSo, I guess the standard xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is undergoing some weird changes at the moment.
