I tried to install Debian 7 on a PowerMac G4, but when I try to start X, the screen simply goes blank and nothing happens. My GPU is a Radeon 7500 RV200. I tried using nomodeset and setting the resolution manually, but the same thing always happens: the screen just goes blank.
View 5 RepliesI recently installed debian on my ibook G4, but when I start up the computer, it doesn't boot into Xorg. When I tried to start Xorg, it says that it is not installed. How would I install it, and how would I start it? When I do the apt-get install xorg, it doesn't work. Right now I'm running ubuntu on it, but I really want just plain debian, as I really dont need all of the bells and whistles that Ubuntu offers. I just need something to do schoolwork on (I'm a highschool sophmore), and I don't want to use OS X for that as I like linux better (specifically debian and ubuntu).

I switched to my onboard Video Card CN896/VN896/P4M900 [Chrome 9 HC]. Here is a bigger problem, compiz dosen't work, hd videos, some flash. I have formated HDD and installed again Ubuntu 10.10. Ubuntu automatic installed the xserver-xorg-video-openchrome. The /etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty.
I've been using Fedora 15 LXDE for a few weeks (its been great), and decided to install the ati proprietary drivers (I used the tutorial in one of the general strickies). As soon as I rebooted, I now get the following message:

I've tried adding 'runlevel 3' to the boot options in Grub to try and prevent fglrx conflicting with Xorg but it doesn't seem to work, unless I'm doing something wrong.
Is it possible to import an xorg.conf file from Debian to Fedora and have it work? The reason for this is that I have an older monitor that only offers 800x600 as the maximum resolution.

Setup:
I had this setup running in a previous configuration. The only difference were the disks. I had a 120GB and a 1TB (/home). Because I need more space I swapped both disks for 2 x 2TB.
I tried a 64bit Debian 5.xx stable install. Everything goes fine until the first boot. After the POST and BIOS screen a cursor justs blinks and the computer does nothing. the computer doesn't start GRUB
Well I thought maybe a small error with downloading the DVD so I tried another debian but Testing now. There the setup hangs when it wants to make the file-systems. It says something like can't make ext4 filesystem. I also tried with ext3. So I manually tried to do fdisk and mkfs.ext4 (and mkfs.ext3) for both disks in the console during installation. fdisk works but when I try mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1 it says that some bin-file is missing? How's that possible on an installation disc? Never ever had that before?
Well after 15 attempts (meanwhile lost 2kg of fingernails)I tried another 32 bit DVD install of Debian 5.xx. It can make the filesystems again and install everything but when it has to boot for the first time it just doesn't. I don't even see GRUB.
Seems to me that the computer doesn't refer to the HD to boot. In the BIOS the BOOT order is just fine (the previous config with the old HD's just worked fine). Even when I put in the install DVD it skips the HD and boots from the DVD?
I really don't get it. The disks are both shown in the BIOS. Is this a hardware or software issue? I think that Linux or GRUB should be able to work with 2TB discs isn't it?

I want to download the driver for mi wireless, get openoffice and a bunch of other things, but with this not working, I'm guessing there's not much I can do now... I have the driver of the wireless, which I downloaded before the installation of Debian, and that I now copied to my new Debian desktop, but I cannot open it... it is a tar.gz file. I'm currently connected through wired connection by the way.
I just installed Debian Testing (with Xfce) along side Win7 on my Dell XPS M1530 and now neither my keyboard nor my USB-mouse work at the login screen. Both worked perfectly during the installation and Grub as well recognizes my keyboard. The Numlock-LED can be switched on and off during the boot, but fails to work at the login screen.

As well as asking me to load up ipw2100-1.3.fw (of which I already have), it asks me to load tigon/tg3_tso5.bin. Loading the firmware is no problem. Finding and downloading nthe firmware is the problem here.I've searched through packacges and bug reports for a dowload link, but I've only come across a bundle with the driver I need, as well as a few unneeded extras. IT doesn't work at all.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed the Squeeze testing version. i have setup networking for static in the /etc/network/interfaces file. tried to find resolv.conf in the /etc/ since could not find i created this file post trying to start the eth1 i am able to ping my ip, but if try to ping the gateway i get an error saying the ping is not sucessfull. I have 2 network cards, eth0 and eth1. as eth0 does not work i have configured eth1. The dump of the interfaces file is below

Okay so I've been trying to get my Powermac G5 running Debian. I thought it would be an interesting project and see what I can do with the PowerPC hardware. The problem, of course, is the sound. Since this a G5 it's one of the newer machines so I looked up the drivers for the sound card which is labeled "K2 KeyLargo Mac/IO" and found that I needed a combination of snd_aoa, snd_aoa_i2sbus, snd_aoa_soundbus_i2c, snd_aoa_fabric_layout, snd_aoa_soundbus, snd_aoa_codec_tas, snd_aoa_codec_onyx, and snd_aoa_tonnie (also many of the resources had both - and _ for these names mix matched and I would love to know if that makes a difference or not and what the proper names for these are because I've tried them both with the - and _ to make sure but, I think I'm missing something. I'm not good with sound).

I've installed squeeze (kernel 2.6.32-3-686 now) on an old Amilo M-6100 laptop with a Silicon Motion graphic chip. I've installed Slim and LXDE but Xorg won't start properly. Apparently it doesn't recognize the screen and tries to apply a wrong resolution, no matter what I do. Also, if I try Xorg -configure, I get stuck with a black screen .
I tried to copy-paste data from a xorg.conf file from there: [URL], to no avail.

I have sucessfully installed Debian 8 stable onto a powermac G5 with and Nvidia FX5200 graphics card, and got the graphics up and running using the nouveau.modeset=0 kernel parameter. However, now the screen is showing completely messed up graphics. The kernel parameters that I have set are: nouveau.modeset=0 and video=TV-1:d.
I've now tried other Desktop environments and they too are messed up. Even window maker is messed up.
I have recently tried to install Debian 6 on a PowerMac G5 that we had lying around. The system installs fine and will boot to a command line, but when the installation was complete and X tried to start (using the default configuration--which I believe specified the 'nouveau' driver) the screen went completely blank and no amount of button-pushing could get me back to even a tty. I did here the standard noise that gdm3 makes when the login window is ready, so this is solely a display issue. Plus, [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[F1] followed by [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Delete] did reboot cleanly so the system didn't hang. I booted from the CD into recovery mode and switched the default X driver to vesa (I had to install it), which, I understand, is supposed to work for everyone. However, nothing worked! I did get one step better: the vesa driver brought me back to the terminal when it crashed, instead of the nouveau's bad habit of stopping the display from working completely. I haven't got the full log files because it would be a pain to mail them to a computer with a working web browser (although I will if needed), but I did see the following messages in the output:

I have a PowerMac G4, and it's either a Quicksilver or a Quicksilver 2002. the ubuntu CD is burned right and recognized with in Mac but not when I hold C or hold Option at boot.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have booted from the .iso cd I made on my Mac last night and was tempted to install it on a 6gb partition that I have on my main HDD but was a bit scared to go past the fourth (or so) step in manual installing where I pick that partition and *do what?* Is it going to install the OS on that partition and leave everything else alone to give me a dual booting PowerMac? It doesn't quite say. I am fearful of screwing up my little ol' machine. Can anyone direct me to something that gives a step by step in manual installation on an already created (HFC+) partition to create a dual booting PowerMac?

1- Resolution is 800x600! I guess, I need to add that there is no xorg.conf file, and I couldn't create it by running `Xorg -configure`. It said the number of screens didn't match number of detected devices or something like that! I'd be really happy if this gets solved!
2- Ctrl+Alt+F1/2/3/4/... doesn't work! Sometimes Alt+Directional keys works. but most of the time it doesn't!
3- I can't get the loud speakers to work, and I couldn't compile Alsa from source... I'll try again, but does anyone know if there is a specific package I need to install to get them to work? (Realtek ID 665)
4- Keys are not working right... Function keys don't work... But the worse thing, is that if let's say Fn+F2 is supposed to disable wireless, F2 does!
I just did a net install on an old powerpc G4 and it seems pretty successful.except i cant change any of the monitor settings from the control panel in gnome (or LXDE)its showing 'not recognised' and only allows 768 x 1024 in very restricted colour.I dont think there is a hardware problem:
- the monitor is a generic old CRT which has worked fine with everything before this.
- the display card is an AGP 32Mb - original with this G4 and was working.
- the computer works great in Mac OS10.3 - (but OS10.3 doesnt support flash or up to date web browser any more, hence trying debian).

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have a motherboard Gigabyte H110M-H DDR3 1.0 and a VGA Nvidia NVS 300 (It doesn't have HDMI connector, but after Debian installation, it shows audio HDMI), After installling Debian 8.4 Jessie amd64, I noticed the sound doesn't work, the motherboard audio codec is a Realtek ALC887, I don't have a HDMI Monitor, nor my VGA has HDMI Connector, but is a little bit strange that Debian recognizes HDMI Audio, if a run "# cat /proc/asound/cards" it shows me two audio cards, the HDMI and the ALC887 and if I run "# cat /procs/asound/modules", both cards are using snd_hda_intel. It is installed PulseAudio and Pavucontrol, I have checked if the audio was muted, but the sound volume is set to 100%, I don't know what to do anymore... I have a computer with a realtek codec too, but it's another model ALC665 or something like that, and the system is equipped with an ATI HD 5450 with HDMI Audio, I have checked the what modules the Debian is using, and both uses the snd_hda_intel, but the sound works with HDMI and Realtek Codec.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Xorg manually in Squeeze on my IBM X30 Thinkpad with intel graphics (it works in Lenny). I used aptitude and installed "xorg" and "fluxbox", but when I restart my computer I get a blank screen, instead of the console login request that I was expecting. (Note: I did not install any login managers). So exactly what happens is that the screen goes black (just backlight on)during boot process. Once I'm at the black screen doing CTRL+ALT+Backspac, Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Alt+F[1-7] will not result in anything.
I tried booting with the single user mode, but same result, so the only way I could acess my log-files was by using a systemrescue-CD. What I find odd about this is that I cant find any configuration files at all. No xorg.conf anywhere in /etc, /etc/X11, nor in /home. I don't even have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folder.Am I expected to write these by myself? And if Xorg is the source of my troubles, why is it starting by itself, without any installed login managers? Xorg not working is one thing, but not even being able to access the console, or log in to my computer makes it rather difficult to search for errors.
