Ubuntu Installation :: Install Step Fails: Select And Install Software?

Jan 7, 2011

I'm an OpenSuse user wanting to try something different.Ubuntu Studios caught my attention. I had a brief play with an older version a while ago and liked whatI saw.Im having problems installing though.I've downloaded the 32bit version from the studio website link, and burnt the DVD.However the install always fails at the same stage: Select and install software. The error message is not specific, and no more information is given other than the step has failed.Any ideas what could be causing this? Ive tried to burn the DVD several times, on 2 different machines, but no luck so far.

Debian Installation :: Unable To Select And Install Desktop Managers In Net-install?

Dec 23, 2015

I downloaded and mounted debian-8.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso on my work machine's VirtualBox v5.0.12 to check out Debian stable/Jessie's installer and clean installation in case I need to do it soon. I like the new installer compared to 11/24/2011 on my old desktop machine. It is much nicer, fancier with its advanced options, etc.

However, I ran into issues with its "Select and Install" part when I selected desktop managers (e.g., KDE and Gnome) and continued. It failed as shown in [URL] .... images. Why? I tried again from scratch and same thing. If I don't select any and just select non-GUI stuff (e.g, SSH and standard system utilities), then it works but I want the pretty GUI stuff.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Select Options To Install From USB

Apr 30, 2011

I have just tryed to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto a USB to install on a netbook. I used the software recomended to prep the USB and booted to it.

In the opening menu where you can select to install on a partition I am unable to press enter, it seems to just reset the menu. The keyboard seems to be working fine because I can use the arrow keys.

I have been unable to find a solution to this problem online, all I have found is this simular issue, with no resolution.

The netbook I am using is the Samsung n220 which apparently works well with ubuntu.

I also searched all over looking for a fedora minimal install iso, something similar to the ubuntu minimal install iso that is only 12mb.

Fedora Installation :: Live KDE CD Install : How To Select Boot From /dev/hda4

Feb 28, 2009

I was able to install Fedora 10 from the Live KDE CD, however I can't boot it.

I placed it on /dev/hda4 of an IDE disk, while on /dev/hda1 I have a RedHat 9 Linux, /home is on /dev/hda2 and the swap is on /dev/hda3. I'm not sure if RedHat 9 and Fedora 10 can coexist on the same HD.

There's an option in the Live KDE CD boot install, which allows one to select:

boot from hard disk:

Do you know what to type in in order to direct Fedora to boot from /dev/hda4 (who may be /dev/sda4 as seen by Fedora)?

P.S. For the time being, I want to forget about Grub or LILO and see if I can boot it this way first. I have LILO working, it boots Windows from a separate disk and RedHat 9 from /dev/hda1.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Select Individual Updates For Installation?

May 3, 2010

I appear to be unable to select individual updates for installation anymore from the Yast Online update screen. I use this to install updates manually on 11.1. But everytime I think I've chosen an update to install, all the updates listed get installed, and not just the one I've chosen. For example I just chose a "Fuse security update" to install and clicked the "Install" button. Nothing further happens until I click "Apply". Then all patches listed under the "All available" listing get applied. How do I just apply the patches that I want to ?

Fedora Installation :: 10 - Get To Select The Intel RAID Driver In The Install Process?

Jan 12, 2009

Installing new Intel server S5000VSA (Sapello) motherboard with RAID 1. Downloaded F10 32 bit DVD and run install. Everything works fine and select Samba and all that. Install completes but on reboot get a blank screen.

I know with Windows one has to load the RAID driver off the Intel driver CD, so guess that is the problem. But how do I do this in Fedora? Question: How do I get to select the Intel RAID driver in the install process? There does not seem to be any place to stop and make this selection. I tried selecting the Red Hat and Suze installs on the Intel configuration assistant but it then reboots and that is it. In Windows it would ask to insert the Intel driver CD but that does not happen. So I am stuck. I loaded Fedora some 3 year ago and like it but then it was not on a RAID setup. I created a VMWare install on my desktop and did the same install options and it works. So the DVD seems fine.

It would be great if it's fixed (checked the symlinks, they point to an emty transparent svg... Would be nice to include cell tower, and connection type icons in the future....)-Connecting always show wireless connecting animation. (IMHO the Gnome-Colors connecting dots were more self explaining)

Fedora Installation :: Install Software Crashes Immediately After Select US English On First Screen

Mar 15, 2010

When I attempt to install the OS on my PC, the install software crashes immediately after I select US-English on the first screen. I'm copying the entire error report below. My system is configured as follows: Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard with 4G RAM. (FYI, I'm using the 32-bit LiveCD just because I may need a 32-bit OS for some purposes. I know this means I may not be able to use all of my RAM.) There are 3 500G hard drives connected to the computer. /dev/sda and /dev/sdb are RAID-1 mirrors via the on-motherboard ICH9R RAID chip. The logical partitions show up as /dev/dm-1, /dev/dm-2, /dev/dm-3, /dev/dm-4, and /dev/dm-5. When I type `fdisk -l`, I can see sda, sdb, and dm-* all separately. (I can provide the full output of `fdisk` if anybody wants to see it.)

/dev/sdc is a standalone drive without RAID.

I want to install Fedora on /dev/dm-2 with swap on /dev/dm-5. Currently, /dev/dm-1 and /dev/sdc2 each contain a separate installation of WinXP. I suspect the problem is with detecting RAID, thus I have deleted most of the error report that doesn't seem to concern storage detection.

General :: Dzen2 Toolbar / Statusbar Script (Simplified)

Oct 8, 2010

I have simplified (i.e., got rid of the stuff I don't want) dzen2 script:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
# Dzen2 toolbar/statusbar execution file.
# Options:
# -xs = which Xinerama screen
# -l = number of lines in slave (dropdown) window
# -u update continually
# -p <n> timed termination; w/o n seconds, persist forever.
# retval: 0 = EOF; 1 = error; or exit:n where n=user-defined retval.
# -e event... -e 'event1=action1:option1:...option<n>,...,action<m>;...;event<l>'
# event... -e 'button1=exec:xterm:firefox;entertitle=uncollapse,unhide;button3=exit'
# Supported events: (see latest README or online docs) .....

There are just 2 little problems that I can't solve.
1. It's not exactly at the top of the screen.
2. As you can see in the attachment, the text in time/date/memory/disk_usage is not vertically centered.

Fedora Installation :: "no Device To Install To" When Select HD

Mar 26, 2009

I'm installing FC-686 onto a Dell 6300 server with several drives, one 300+gig and about 5 9gig drives. The install disk loads fine but when I select install to HD it tells me that there is no device to install to. Obviously doesn't see the HDs. I have used the internal program to format the HDs, I think I selected RAID 3. I wanted to use all the HD space as my data is not critical requiring RAID 5. Unless someone convinces me otherwise. I did this also because I wanted to maximize disk space. What else to do with 9 gig drives?

So I've installed Ubuntu before on this machine, but this time around with Lucid, it's just not working.

It all works fine until step four, where you choose your partition. There are no choices. Simple as that. Continuing just tells me to fix that there are no partitions, but I cant. There are questions similar to mine on here, but none are answered.

I really need this installed and cant use the live version where I'm posting from now.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Can't Select OS After 10.04?

Jun 21, 2010

Searched around but have not found this problem listed. I have upgraded my 9.04 installation by doing a new install of 10.04 and keeping my /home partition. I have a dual boot system with Win XP and an older version of ubuntu on another partition. The problem is that when I get the grub menu I cannot select anything other than the top option. Arrowing down it just keeps popping back up to the top option. I can hold the arrow key and it will go down through all the selections but just pops back up to the top if I let go.

If I press "e" to try and edit in order to manually select a drive to boot to the editor comes up and I can select up and down the lines but if I try to move the cursor to the right it just snaps back to the beginning of the line.So I can't select windows XP or my old Ubuntu install, I can only boot to the new 10.04.$ grub-install -vgrub-install (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu6)

OpenSUSE :: Select And Install All The Listed Rpm's?

I have been using Suse Linux for years and I must ask some basic questions about repositories which may be elementary to many. Recently I was redirected to a repository with over 30 rpms and I figured it is time to ask the questions. Is it implied that when you go to a repository that one has to select and install all the listed rpm's?

If so, which order do you use? Is there some tool to load all at once instead of individually? If not, is there an intelligent way to select the ones you need or does one simply use "trial and error" approach? Can you skip development rpms?

Ubuntu Installation :: Tap To Select On T42p Thinkpad?

Under 8.04 I did this to get the tap to select working on my thinkpad with a trackpoint in the keyboard. Is this still the same under 10.04? I'm not the greatest with the terminal so I want to check before I start a change.

Code: sudo apt-get install sysfsutils -Once that is installed, do; Code: gksudo gedit /etc/sysfs.conf -and add this line to the bottom, then save it.devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/press_to_select=1 (several days later) OK, I went ahead and tried it and this is the way to get the trackpoint working - I originally had one too many spaces in the code but now I beleive the code as shown is correct for you people with a thinkpad (and maybe others) who want to use the trackpoint with tap.

AGAIN! Now it stopped working after a reboot. Does this command not make it permanent??
