Debian Installation :: Installing Metapackages With Apt-get Flags?

Jul 23, 2015

I'm researching how I want to go about making my own LXDE install without using any of the options from tasksel. I have a few questions about metapackages.

First: Will the apt-get flags "--install-suggests" and "--no-install-recommends" affect what is installed from metapackage dependencies?

For example, if I install the lxde package, it also installs lxde-core. If I do:

Code: Select allsudo apt-get install lxde --no-install-recommends will recommended packages from lxde-core also be excluded?

Second: Is there a way to automatically install the alternative "or" packages listed?

For example, [URL] lists several alternatives to the defaults: audacious instead of lxmusic, transmission instead of deluge, etc.

Debian :: Configure: Error: Cannot Find The Flags To Link With Boost Date_time

Feb 17, 2011

I'm trying to cross compile something and it requires a recent version of Boost. I'm using squeeze and gnome and my updates are all up to date. I could not get through the 'configure' stage with Boost dev packages from the debian repository, so I went to the Boost web site. I thought the package requires boost 1.44 or later, so I downloaded 1.45.0 from the site and proceeded to build and install it. I think I installed it right, using /usr/local/ as the prefix. Back at my main project, I try to configure my build and I get some of the following text and then the configure stops.

Code:

checking for Boost's header version... 1_45
checking for the toolset name used by Boost for arm-none-linux-gnueabi-g++... configure: WARNING: could not figure out which toolset name to use for arm-none-linux-gnueabi-g++
checking boost/date_time/posix_time/posix_time.hpp usability... yes

[code]....

I cannot get past the 'date_time' thing. Does anyone know what is meant by 'flags to link with Boost date_time' ?

this is how to set your ubuntu for compiling to use multi processor. some older packages require you to use only 1 processor. so comment the export make flag, then "echo $MAKEFLAGS" to see how many processors your using you might need to "source .bashrc" to update the rc file

Debian Installation :: Installing Debian On IBook G4 / PowerPC

Jul 17, 2010

I have downloaded Debian/PowerPC_lenny from http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst. The netinst CD or the minimal CD for some reason doesn't boot. When I put it in the CD-ROM it doesn't begin whatever it has to do. Do I need to do anything? I restart my iBook G4 (1.33 GHz PowerPC G4) several times and held the "c" button (for CD-ROM) but nothing has happened. I wonder if someone can help me begin the installation process.

FYI, I have partitioned my hard drive into two volumes. I would like to install Debian in one of them. I *do not* want my Mac OS X to get disappeared in the Debian installation process. So please help me if you would as to how I can (1) boot Debian minimal CD and (2) install Debian on one of the two volumes I have on my iBook.

Debian Installation :: Installing From USB Stick

May 21, 2015

I tried to build a bootable USB stick using Code: Select alldd if=~/Desktop/linux/debian-8.0.0-i386-xfce-CD-1.img of=/dev/disk1 bs=1m as mentioned here: URL... but this does not work on my MacBook 3.1, late 2007 model (yes, I am using rEFIt and my CD drive is dead). The error message upon trying to boot from the USB stick using rEFIt says something like 'unable to load bootia32.efi'.

The workaround: I took the "bootX64.efi" from here:URL... on the USB drive and renamed it as "boot.efi".I copied the "debian-8.0.0-i386-xfce-CD-1.iso" to "/efi/boot" on the USB drive and renamed it as "boot.iso".So now my USB stick has 2 files only: "/efi/boot/boot.efi" and "/efi/boot/boot.iso" and nothing else. Now I was able to boot from the USB stick get into a GRUB prompt.

Code: Select allloopback loop (hd0,1)/efi/boot/boot.iso
grubconfig (loop)/boot/grub/grub.cfg

The installer starts fine and I choose my locale, keyboard etc. until it starts to scan for the CD drive and I face...The error message says that a CD was not found (as expected).I fired up the shell offered by the installer and mounted the USB stick to "/mnt/usb" like this:

Code: Select allmount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/usb

It works and I can see my ISO file in "/mnt/usb/efi/boot/boot.iso".I tried to mount the ISO image to "/dev/cdrom":
Code: Select allmount -o loop -t iso9660 /mnt/usb/efi/boot/boot.iso /dev/cdrom

waited for a while and killed (control + c) the process and found that my "/dev" folder has been flooded with files named like the string "loop" followed by some digits (loop1245, loop8766 etc.).Can the Debian installer be somehow tricked into believing that the ISO file on the USB stick is the mounted CD?

Debian Installation :: GRUB After Installing 8.2 Over Ubuntu

Mar 20, 2016

I had a dual boot with windows 10 and Ubuntu 14.04, and I just decided to move from Ubuntu to Debian, but I didn't unistall Ubuntu. I just deleted it's partitions (/, /home, swap) and used the new allocatable space. When I was doing the partitions I noticed that the installer didn't allow me to choose between logical and primary partitions (not sure if this is important).

When I continued with the installation process, in the GRUB section the installer detected two Windows Vista options and later I selected /dev/sda as the disk for the GRUB (MBR). When I tried to boot, a GRUB command line screen from ubuntu appeared, when I wrote exit a message appeared "Boot succesfull" and then it sent me to the Boot selection from my laptop.

From there I can choose to boot Windows 10 normally or select a disk partition that sends me to the Debian GRUB from where I can boot Debian normally, but the Windows entries that appear (Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 recovery mode) fail to boot. So when I boot the Debian GRUB appears.

Debian Installation :: Power Off While Installing Squeeze?

When installing squeeze from either a dvd or cd (i've burned loads to see if it was the problem) my computer goes through the installation, until the dreaded step of "selecting and installing software" where the installation stops, and my computer turns itself off because of a kill signal sent to everything. I've tried booting with fb=false, and for some reason acpi=off, and neither of them solved the problem (acpi=off caused my laptop to turn off unexpectedly earlier) (HP 6735s, AMD64 using Turion X2, 4GB Ram)

Debian Installation :: Installing 6.x Into VirtualBox 4 With Ext4?

May 30, 2011

I'm not sure if this is a Debian question or a VirtualBox question, so I'm posing here and will likely pose it on the VBox forums as well. When I install Debian into a new VirtualBox VM, it always installs Ext3 as the file system. I've tried the Advanced installer, but there does not seem to be a way to specify Ext4 as the file system. My questions are:- Is Ext3 the default for Debian 6?- Can I specify Ext4 as the file system at install? Should I even care? I know Ext4 is faster, but would that performance boost be meaningful for a laptop/cloud user?I know I can convert from an Ext3 to Ext4, but that's clearly a lot more work than just installing it during initial setup.VirtualBox does support Ext4, as I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 with Ext4 and it boots and operates fine.

Debian Installation :: Installing From A Local Partition?

Jul 8, 2011

Is it possible to partition a hard drive with Debian already installed and put a live disc image in the second one and use grub to boot it. Then using this boot to the installer and install to the first partition. The answer for why I want to try this is that I have a computer that runs a robot that needs Debian. There is no CD, USB, or internet currently on the drive. there is an Ethernet plug, but It won't work until the OS is in place. We tried taking the hard drive and installing Debian to it from a USB stick on another computer, but it has the wrong Ethernet drivers and we can't get it to talk to the internet on the robot's computer.

Everything else is fine, but with out an internet connection the robot will not work.If your interested the board is an old Versalogic VSBC-8 and the robot is a Pioneer 1 from Mobile robotics. The hard drive (not that it matters) is a standard 80GB IDE notebook drive from Western Digital.

Debian Installation :: Can't Open CDROM Drive While Installing VM 7.6

Oct 9, 2014

VirtualBox 4.3.14
Windows 7
Debian 7.6

I'm trying to create a new VM with Debian 7.6. I downloaded the 3 install iso discs and tried to install. When I begin the installation it seems to take control of the CDROM and I am no longer able to eject it by either pressing the eject button or trying to eject through Windows. The installation goes fine until it asks if I have any other discs to install (which I do ... I have 2 more). At this point I say "Yes" but I cannot get the CDROM to open up at all since it doesn't automatically eject for another disc and as I mentioned before ... I can't do it manually or in Windows.

- I cannot do an installation over the internet because this is a government computer which is requires to be hooked to a government network. There are certain certificates required to access the network which are not available to my newly made (or in the process of making) Linux system but rather only to my host Windows system.
- I cannot use a newer version of VirtualBox because that opens up a whole new set of issues dealing with WinVerifyTrust getting CERT_E_REVOCATION_FAILURE most likely due to our symantec security software.

So my Storage Settings in VirtualBox are as follows for my CDROM drive:
- Controller: IDE Controller
- Type: PIIX4
- "Use Host I/O Cache" is checked
- Host Drive D:
- CD/DVD Drive: IDE Secondary Master
- "Passthrough" is checked

I cannot install the Debian 7.6 OS because I cannot eject each disc and put in the next disc. The only way I can eject the disc is if I reboot my entire system (host windows system) which obviously leaves me at an unfinished point in my install and therefore I have to restart the install and end up right where I was 30 minutes earlier.

Debian Installation :: Installing Live USB - What ISO Files To Download

Jan 8, 2015

I have a USB which I want to use for a 'live' debian OS. I have debian 7.7 on hard disk and will be using Unetbootin to transfer the .iso file onto the USB.

However, when I go the debian archive there are so many iso files for the particular debian pkg [URL] .... There's iso, iso.contents, iso.log, iso.packages and iso.zsync. Do I download all of these iso files?

I'll be doing a Code: Select allsha256sums <iso-filename> to make sure the downloads aren't corrupted. But when I use Unetbootin and get it to write the main .iso file onto USB, do I then repeat this process with all the other iso files for the OS?

Debian Installation :: Installing Next To Windows (dual Boot)?

Dec 13, 2010

I've recently bought a new computer and installed Windows 7 on it, but left 100GB of space on a separate partition so I could put Debian next to it in dual boot. I have the new Intel i7 950 processor and I run Windows 7 Proffesional 64 bit, so I assumed I had to pick the ia64 debian image. However the CD I burned from the ia64 image didn't boot. (a black screen started and an underscore kept flashing, but nothing else happened)[URL]

I've managed to install i386 Debian on a older intel pentium 4 computer before and that worked fine. I believe I used another application to burn the CD then. This time I've burned the CD with the default Windows CD burn application. I can try burn more CD's but I don't have much left so I want to make sure this is the problem before attempting again. (the burned files on the ia64 CD look exactly the same as the files on the i386 CD, when browsing through the cd files in windows) "If your PC has a 64-bit AMD or Intel processor, you will most likely need the "amd64" images (though "i386" is also fine), the "ia64" images will not work."This seems a bit strange, they recommend me to use the amd64 image if you have a "64-bit AMD or intel processor". I dunno if this is a typo, but it seems weird to me that the AMD-64 Debian version would also work on my Intel machine
