Debian :: Duel Dedicated Hard Drives One For Debial And One For Windows Xp Home?

I choose the drive to boot to from the computer Bios. When i boot into Windows my clock time changes, about 5 hours.I have another computer with Ubuntu 10.10 installed, but it will not install on this computer, Debian Did. Ubuntu gave me a command to fix this and it worked. However the Debian computer will not accept that command, Which is open a terminal from the menu applications accessories and type gksudo gedit /ect/defaults/rcs in this configuration change the row UTC set it as:UTC=no save and reboot and then set the clock. [It was set to yes]

I lost two computers this summer, and want to place my xp harddrive in with my cpu running linux.
I have both drives in , and linux detects the windows drive.
Is it too late to make this a duel boot.? all the duel boot threads, I searched start with a fresh install.

I have brought an ipod of my friends with a lot of movies and i was then running on windows. The Whole sys was infected and I reloaded the windows operating system but it worked fine only upto two restarts. Then I started and completely successfully installed fedora core 10 i386. I Have very much important information in the windows hard drives. Please tell me anyone how to mount these partitions from the beginning.

I finally have decided to give ubuntu a shot.Windows is becoming too familiar, and it's been forever since I have used command line since DOS.I really need some humility, and I think that Linux will teach me some.I am going to give it a whirl on a "spare" machine, dual booting with Windows 7 64 on two separate hard drives. I'm burning the ubuntu live cd x86 right now. I am going to unplug my windows drive and start the installation.

I had installed windows XP and then Ubuntu a few months ago. I was mostly using Ubuntu only. My Ubuntu is up to date. Windows XP got the blue screen and i had to re-install it. So, i used the Disk Utility and formatted my C-drive as NTFS with a boot flag.
After that, when i attempted to install windows XP on my C-Drive that i just formatted, Windows Setup is unable to recognize any drives! I really don`t want to uninstall Ubuntu or format my whole HDD, just to install windows XP. But i also want to install windows XP as i have to run some applications in it!.

I just started working with Linux over the weekend. I do have a working dual booting system but it's not configured exactly how I want it to be. Currently Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu are on the same hard drive but different partitions. The Windows boot screen comes up and I can select Windows or Ubuntu fine. Grub comes up when I select Ubuntu and I can successfully select any choice in the menu and it will run properly.
Everything works great now so you may wonder why I even want to keep tinkering, well, it's not working how I want it to. This is what I want it to do. I want Windows 7 on disk 0 and Ubuntu on disk 1. I want each OS to have it's own hard drive. I want Grub to be the only boot loader that comes up with the option to select Ubuntu or Windows. I want to skip the window's OS selection screen all together. I can modify Grub, I've already done some of that on my work computer.
I've been installing from windows. Should I use a CD instead? Would that accomplish my goals without doing anything special?

We were trying to install w7 on a reserved partition. W7 did not like the partition (whatever we tried).
Since we had 3 hard-drives, on the allocated drive we deleted all partitions and set the partition table type new to MSDOS (yast etc.....).
W7 installed fine. We did not time it, but it appeared that 11.3 installs faster plus considering 11.3 installs quite a number of applications.
There are plenty of postings re integrating W7 to the Grub-menu.
This system went through several Suse updates, hardware upgrades, basically was all over the place.... we did a "new" install of 11.3 allocating its own hard-drive.
Install......fine, and Grub entered W7 to the menu. Worked ! Mounted the windows partition to /home/yourusername/windows
So, if you really (?) need W7 and have a spare hard-drive, this maybe is a clean solution.

Months ago one of my computers died. I have bought a brand new one laptop, but I have a problem at the moment I wanted to install Ubuntu in dual boot with Windows 7: the new partition that windows 7 reserves for securing system files.
There are three partitions: Windows 7 principal, Windows 7 for securing system files (at the drive's beginning) and the recovery partition that HP puts there. Then I only have option to resize the Windows principal partition and get another principal partition. My question is if you know how to deal with this?
The other option you can help me is to advise me about some external hard drives to install ubuntu in them and don't touch the internal disk of my laptop.

I'm a n00b at dual booting and I plan on installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a separate hard drive than my Windows 7 64 bit one in a dual boot situation. I have read that you can do this by unplugging the Windows hard drive, install Ubuntu on the other one, and than plug the Windows hard drive back in and everything will be fine and dandy. Is this correct? If it is, will I have to manually set the Primary and Secondary drive (in the BIOS I think?), or will it automatically do that.

I have been messing around with the ubuntu family for some time now, and usually have no problem finding my answers. This one, however, is giving me some trouble. I have been using ubuntu on my laptop for some time now, and recently got a new 2TB hard drive for my desktop. I cloned the old hard drive to the new one, and decided to install ubuntu onto a third drive. The third drive was IDE, the new one is SATA. I disconnected the other hard drive, and so my current set up is a SATA drive with Windows 7, and an IDE drive with Ubuntu (11.04 of course)
Well, I am unable to dual boot between the two, unfortunately, and would like to figure out how. I would like to say the problem is with Windows, since that is the primary drive. No GRUB shows up upon booting when both drives are plugged in, and the Windows Bootloader does not show my installation of Ubuntu, instead it goes right to Windows.

I'm trying to install jessie on a new computer, but the installer does not see the hard drives. I copied the DVD-1 iso to a usb stick with dd (also tried the netinstall) and it boots, but when I get to partitioning, it only sees the usb drive. If I go to another virtual console and run dmesg or fdisk -l, all drives are seen correctly.
Back up a little - at first I tried the on-board raid, but when the installer couldn't see the drives, I went back into the bios and reset the sata mode to ahci. I've got it set to use bios/legacy OS, or whatever it's called, fast boot is disabled. Even if only one drive is connected, the debian installer does not see it. Then I read up on the fake raid I was trying to use and decided to go with software raid. Can't do that if there's no hard drives listed in the partitioner.
My own installer (refractainstaller) does work, and I've installed jessie with it a couple of times onto one drive, but I really wanted to use raid and lvm, and my installer doesn't do either of those things. No optical drive, but if that's the only way to install, I'll pull the one from my current box and use it for the install. I think I still have a blank CD or DVD lying around.

GSkill cheap memory, which already passed a memtest.

How do I get windows to install and duel boot with ubuntu?I am duel running Ubuntu 10.04 and uber student (Linux distro). The plan is to lose uber student and add windows 7. I need to format the part of the harddrive to good old ntfs (or what ever it may be called ) So I went system > administration > disk utility. of course I then choose the hard drive deleted the uber student partition of 100 gigs and turned it in to ntfs.Ramed windows disk in. But the windows screen didnt show up this partion and only gave me the option to use my swap space my 140 for ubuntu or my 110 for logical partitions.

i currently have a Macbook and would like to install it there as a duel boot with OSX.
Tried to get it going using bootcamp but its just annoying me now, do i have to install windows first before installing Linux or is there another way around this since i need a authentic version of windows, to which i will never use i just want the linux and OSX running.

I am trying to switch over my NAS from Win7 x64 to Debian 8.x Jessie. I have run into a few issues with the power management. When Idle my NAS should be consuming 25W, however it was consuming much more. The more hard disks I mounted, the higher the wattage.
I have followed a few tutorials but that has only been a partial succes.

Now there are two suggestions I found but both I was unable to implement.
The first suggestion was to mount using "noatime". However I do not know how to rewrite fstab because I am using ntfs for now (at least untill I get it working).

How to mount multiple external HDD's. I'd like to link or mount the music, torrents, and general files from several external hard drives and apply permissions (in some cases I only want the mount or link to be read only).
My setup:
- Seagate Dockstar running Debian squeeze (it's headless so I don't have a gui running)
- Two external HDD's with one partition on each (250GB and 400GB)
What I'd like to accomplish:
1. Mount the external HDD's to /media/HDDs as read/write (this is already working using udev and autofs and it's available in samba)
2. I'd like the MUSIC directories on both external HDD's to show up under the same mount point. In other words I want the MUSIC folders (from both HDD's) to appear as one large library of music. And I only want this to be readonly. It will be used as the library for mpd and/or squeezebox.
3. Mount a directory used to download torrents to. I'll probably pick on HDD as the target for torrent dowloads. But let me know if you have any other ideas regarding this.
Since I have the first one done, how would I accomplish 2 & 3?

I have two servers (A and B) which are identical. My idea was to have a software RAID 1 with both of them running and if server A craps out I wanted to swap the hard drives from server B into server A. When I tried to test this idea the network driver doesn't seem to want to cooperate. ifconfig gives nothing and I can't figure out why. From googling I've read that a network card has a unique ID on it (I'm assuming their talking about the MAC address) and is used in some config files which is why swapping hard drives gives two different MAC addresses and confuses the system. If that is so would anyone know exactly what config files the mac address is stored/used in? That way I can make a backup of those files and swap those out if I ever need to swap out the hard drives.

I have searched for this but can not find it. I want to install debian 6.0 squeeze on to both of my hard drives and run each as a seperate instance of debian, and be able to choose at boot up which one I want to run. I have an HP with 2 500 gig hard drives, running windows vista currently, processor is an intell quad 2 core 6600, nothing else on the pc for programs and such at this time. I would also like to keep the windows if possible to run other programs at a later time.

I am currently thinking about moving my debian install onto another more powerful motherboard/processor/ram amount. My question is how difficult will the move be?
I have done some reading on cloning and or moving. It seems like moving is the best bet,

It looks like its as simple as moving the harddrive. But what about multiple hardrives with LVM set up? I also realize I will probably have to find the network drivers for the new motherboard. There's probably other drivers that will need to be installed as well. What would need to be configured in terms of VM set up?
The former set up is,
Asus MB with i3 and 8GB of ram 3 hard drives
VLM set up
samba server for the local windows machines
Virtual Box with one VM - Win 7
SNTP server set up to serve the home network.
SSH with keys
VirtualBox PHP
Transmission for torrents
Plex and Subsonic (for remote streaming), other assorted packages
New Set up is,
Intel mobo with i5 and 16 GB of ram
-I would literally be moving the hard drives into this computer

I installed ubuntu 10.10 in m machine along side win xp. It booted several times. but it did not recognize my wireless network adapter. so we followed the instructions to install and use the windows driver for it.cold not get it to work and decided to reboot. now the machine boots to the dual boot screen and will not go any further. nor will the keyboard work to select which os to boot. the machine just completly hangs up i cant even get in to bios.

As you are probably aware that WD released new drives ranging from 1TB to 2TB with native support for 4K sector size. And as most of stuff written online is regarding Windows and their support for 4K, my question is has anyone already started to use it under linux?

I'm using Debian Lenny so my questions are: is fdisk automatically recognizes that that drive is 4K drive, or it totally ignores it and partition is as 512byte one? In windows if no 4K support is available it would emulate it and performance would be downgraded. Do I need to enable any specific components in kernel so 4K drive is supported? I wanted to make sure there would be no data loss if I select 4K partition type.

Wanted to try Ubuntu for the first time i used a wubi install and i made sure i had duel boot when i selected for the installment because id like to play some games every once in a while well i got some updates from Ubuntu today and after i installed them when i restarted my computer i noticed that windows 7 wasn't there to choose.

I've just installed linux on my Acer Aspire One netbook, (10.10 netbook edition) I've done it as a duel boot with Windows 7 Starter as i want to use Linux, family want to use windows. But ideally i would want the pc to boot up as Windows then say if i hit a certain key on bootup it would swap it over to Linux from windows before it starts to load?

For the past few years, I've been duel booting my PC with Windows Vista and Ubuntu, and for some weird unknown reason Windows Vista won't even boot up pass the update screen... so I want to get rid of it.
Every tutorial I find says put the ubuntu cd in, and press install, but my computer isn't detecting the cd at start up, so is there any other ways I can remove windows without (or another way to load the cd)? I can't access Windows at all, so.. I won't be able to do anything about that.

I have a hardisk shared on my windows machine. And I would like to be able to access this on my opensuse notebook. Just cant figure it out. Dont have much experience in opensuse. I just need to know the best way to do this. Also, can opensuse read/write NTFS? Also I have a printer on my moms machine that runs XP home. The printer is shared I would like to be able to print but its no biggie. It some type of HP 3 in 1. I just wnat it to print, I dont care about the scanner and stuff.

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data
