What's the point of checking if my file was tampered (as it says in the debians page [URL] ....) if the signatures are downloaded over http? Didn't the recent incident with Linux Mint had cleared our mind about these things?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a backup HDD with a different distro for my laptop and i can boot into it via external usb or if swapped into the laptop. This HDD/install in question is debian testing and was working fine, the issue arose suddenly. I was first suspecting a failure of hardware somewhere on the motherboard, but the hdd i was using with an external usb adapter also works when installed into the machine. also, the HDD is recognized once i have booted using the external HDD and distro, but it is not recognized by the bios. so i dunno, my first guess is something became corrupt within the testing install, but i guess its also possible that there is some wrong with the HDD but thats not immediately apparent as all the data is still accessible.
Should also note that the HDD with testing on it is also recognized when connected via the external usb adapter, while booted from alternative distro/HDD.
Also. just tried this, but i can get the testing HDD/disto to boot if connected externally. it was going pretty quick, but there i did catch a line about a corrupt filesystem. any commands to run to see what might be going on?? log files to look at?
I use deluge and it worked for a while then randomly I got this error message when trying to download a .torrent file:"/tmp/Manchester_Orchestra___I_m_Like_A_Virgin_Losing_A_ ___-1.torrent could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred.Try saving to disk first and then opening the file."

View 2 Replies View Relatedmy mouse wouldn't work in any fashion after going through most of the install process from Debian Lenny to Squeeze (couldn't click, move the mouse, etc. under both Compiz and Metacity). My system is a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 laptop; I keep the touchpad disabled, but the button mouse (TrackPoint) wouldn't work either. I was following the instructions here:

So, the first thing I did was run the following commands, as it says to do:
# apt-get upgrade
# apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686
# apt-get install udev
Then, I rebooted my machine into the new kernel (2.6.32-5-686). I got a ton of udev warning messages at startup (all along the lines of "SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS{}= to match a parent device, in something-or-other" - details can be provided if needed), but got a functioning prompt. I logged in, ran startx, and everything worked except the mouse, which couldn't do anything - as if it wasn't recognized at all. Switching window managers from Compiz to Metacity, as mentioned before, didn't help. "modprobe psmouse" revealed that that module was correctly loaded.
Rebooting into my old backported kernel (2.6.32-bpo.3-686) restored mouse function, although I still had the udev warning messages (so maybe those aren't relevant, I don't know). Apparently, something about the different kernels is causing the problem, but I'm not sure what - any thoughts? I haven't wanted to complete the upgrade with "apt-get dist-upgrade" without knowing that I'll have a working mouse, since I need a functional GUI at the moment and don't have a good way of fixing it if I trash it.
I cannot use any torrent programs because nothing will download. Every figure will sit at '0' indefinitely...forever! I can boot up my Windows XP install and it will start within a few seconds. I am just trying to figure out what's going on. Another problem is that my LXDE desktop doesn't seem to pick up every application I install. It doesn't go in the menu. I tried Torrent but it didn't go in the menu. I would start it via CLI but I'm not sure what to type. I thought there might be a security issue but that's only speculation.
I know that ports are supposed to be set via the router settings but I'm sharing the router. I might go to a relative's home and try to work on the problem there. I can go in the router there. But, I can have nothing set and just start downloading with default settings in Windows so I thought it can't be a ports problem. Unless? I'm at a loss and have no other theories. Debian and other distros want you to download their OS via torrent so to not even have it work.
I've been trying to download the torrent for i386 and I keep getting this for some reason

Please suggest a bit torrent client for Debian which is having optional feature of shutting down the PC when download gets completed (as in BitTorrent, MuTorrent of Windows).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running on debian squeeze 6.0.2. I have been using it for the last id say 3 weeks and really am enjoying it.
I generally use transmission-gtk to share files over the internet. Normally I seed torrents at 110-160kb/s for hours at a time. However after messing around with firestarter my upload speed for seeding torrents rarely peaks over 70kb/s. I have purged firestarter with no success of my regular upload speed, and am very confused as to what happened. I also notice sometimes when it will get to about 70kb/s it will immediately drop down to the 20-30kb/s range.
For incoming bittorrent connections I use port 37294. I have set port 37294 to be allowed in my firewall, and forwarded in my router (since purging firestarter did not help I just reinstalled it).
I have also read allowing ports 6881-6889 is important, but I have never done that in my history of using torrents, and I have never experienced a decrease in UL speed like this.
Have I done something incorrect? I have never had this issue on other machines?
Just went to download 8.04.4 and to use the torrent. Guess what, the links on the page point to 8.04.3 torrent download which gets you a 404 error. To get by this, go into the address window of your browser and change each 8.04.3 to 8.04.4 and you will get the torrent.
Just thought I would pass this on if anyone was trying to get it via the torrent. If anyone is watching, maybe the links should be updated on the download pages.

ubuntu-10.04-alternate-amd64.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso.torrent

So, my experience with the upgrade. Going from 9.10 64-bit to 10.4 64-bit. Tried to be a decent, sharing sort and downloaded the LiveCD for 64-bit from torrent. No problem. Didnt have any blank CDs handy, but I had a 1GB USB thumb drive that I have used to install other distros that I wanted to test, so used unetbootin to make my installation on. No problem.
LiveCD tried to run, but hung with a black screen; no blinking cursor, nothing. Problem. Restart, go back to my functioning system, and re-create the LiveCD on the thumb drive using USB Startup Disc Creator. No problem. Reboot. Monitor went into standby and never came out. Problem. Decided to give up on the LiveCD. Downloaded the alternate-install CD for 64-bit and put it on the thumb drive. No problem.
Installation went fine. No major hang-ups at this point. Had the grub_puts problem, even though I specified the correct place, and so had to reinstall grub, which fixed that.
Although it is still early in the process for me, my main (relatively minor) gripe is the same one I always have: Although Linux seems to be able to tell a lot about the hardware (through what I assume is either asking the hardware about it capabilities or getting info from the BIOS, perhaps), why can it not tell that my keyboard numlock key is supposed to be ON? My BIOS is set to turn it on at boot. My username and password both have numbers in them, and it is convenient for me to have the numlock on at boot and remain on.
I fully realize that there are many users of notebooks/netbooks that having this setting ON for default is a problem. I dont want it ON as default. I want a simple way to change the setting. Ive seen complaints and questions about this since at least Edgy (there may be older postings, but I havent needed to research back). System>Preferences>Keyboard can let me do so many things with my keyboard - except this, apparently.
I'm trying to upgrade to F11, and I'm having trouble. I attempted to download the x86_64 DVD .iso image by bit torrent, and it seemed okay, but when I started the installation the DVD failed the initial integrity check. I tried a second time with another DVD and got the same result.I tried running md5sum on the .iso image, but the response did not match what was in the CHECKSUM file that came with the .iso image -- should it? I tried downloading a live DVD image for comparison and found the same result - the response to the md5sum command did not match what was listed in the CHECKSUM file.Should these checksums match, or am I comparing apples and oranges? I thought the bit torrent client was supposed to check the files, but I'm not sure about that.

I am running Wheezy 7.9 32 bit, with the kernel Linux 3.2.0-4-686-pae, and Gnome 3.4.2 on an Intel Pentium CPU G3420 @ 3.2 GHz. I installed a new printer in August, an HP Officejet 7612 all-in-one printer/scanner/copier, and it worked perfectly as both a printer and a scanner first time, despite not being listed on the supported list in SANE. Two weeks ago, I got a general software update notification, and did the update. Now the scanner is not recognised. The printer still works fine as a printer, but when using Simple-scan, I get the error message "No scanners detected. Please check your scanner is connected and powered on". I have had a look round on Google, and all the suggestions made do not work.
I tried the suggestion to add myself to the scanner users list on my PC which made no difference (even though the scanner previously worked without my being added to the scanner users list).
I have deleted the printer and re-installed it using CUPS, but that still has no effect. I tried re-installing HPLIP also to no avail, and I have now lost the toolbox on the drop down menu under <Applications> <Accessories> <HP Toolbox>, as when I click on it, nothing happens.
It would seem that something in the update has messed up Simple-scan. Looking at the dpkg log (is this the right thing to look at?) for the date of the update, I cannot find anything which directly involved SANE, so I think that it might be something else which has affected SANE. How I can find out which update did the damage? I don't normally do anything except accept recommended updates, so I am a bit lost as to what to do.
I just installed Jessie in a new Toshiba Satellite C75D-B7260.

I'm using Debian (Stetch at the moment). Since a couple of days i noticed that some keystrokes get not recognized by the system, which is really annoying if i type something. It also happens sometimes that a random key gets pressed. For example if i want to type "Hello world", I get "Helllllllllllllo, world", the system would print the "l" character, for example, as long as i don't press any other key. I have a similar problem with my mouse, sometimes it would just get stuck and would not recognise any movement or key presses for a couple of seconds.
