Ubuntu Installation :: Get A Torrent Download App On Computer For File Sharing?
Mar 19, 2010
I am a relative moron when it comes to using Ubuntu. This is a relatively old machine and I purchased it from a friend. She said Ubuntu was a good choice to maximize space as opposed to XP. I want to find a way (and maybe an example of one) to get a torrent download app on my computer for file sharing. I found one that uses Java, but when I tried to install java it was utter failure.

Just went to download 8.04.4 and to use the torrent. Guess what, the links on the page point to 8.04.3 torrent download which gets you a 404 error. To get by this, go into the address window of your browser and change each 8.04.3 to 8.04.4 and you will get the torrent.
Just thought I would pass this on if anyone was trying to get it via the torrent. If anyone is watching, maybe the links should be updated on the download pages.

I am interested in downloading ubuntu 10.04 on a cd for a friend. I want to use a torrent to get the file so I can seed after the download. When I go to the alternate download page located here: http:[url]....It gives me multiple options on which torrent to download:
ubuntu-10.04-alternate-amd64.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-server-amd64.iso.torrent
ubuntu-10.04-server-i386.iso.torrent
I am confused as to which I should download.I know that amd64 is for the amd architecture and i386 is for intel, but what is the difference between alternate and desktop?

Ok Ive tried soooo many tutorials and been through sooo many forums but I cant get my file sharing to work from any computer. Ive got a - Ubuntu 10.04(64bit) desktop to use as a home web/file server, wired.(BEN-SERVER)- Vista(32bit) laptop, wireless.(BEN-LAPTOP)- Windows 7(64bit) desktop, wireless.(BEN-LAVIE)- EchoLife HG520s ADSL2 wireless modem.
At the moment...In Ubuntu network browswer it only displays BEN-LAPTOP.But trying to browse BEN-LAPTOP I get "Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server".Vista only displays BEN-LAVIE and browsing gives me "Windows cannot access \BEN-LAVIE"And Windows 7 doesn't display any.Previously I was able to share between Windows 7 and Ubuntu but I don't know what I did but it stopped working. I have since reinstalled Ubuntu and tried again from scratch but no luck

I've been searching this forum and the rest of the web for days now for a good software for a CLI Debian installation that will take links to file sharing sites such as Rapidshare, Megaupload, Uploading, DepositFiles etc and download them when possible (wait for timer to run out and so on).The only thing i've found so far is Slimrat but i dont seem to get it working with WWW::Mechanize even after trying to update it through CPAN

I couldn't find an answer myself. So, the problem is that every single bittorrent program I tried downloads files I checked to ignore so I know this is not a program related issue. For example, there are 2 pictures in a torrent, I select only one but in the end I have both downloaded.

What's the point of checking if my file was tampered (as it says in the debians page [URL] ....) if the signatures are downloaded over http? Didn't the recent incident with Linux Mint had cleared our mind about these things?

I cannot use any torrent programs because nothing will download. Every figure will sit at '0' indefinitely...forever! I can boot up my Windows XP install and it will start within a few seconds. I am just trying to figure out what's going on. Another problem is that my LXDE desktop doesn't seem to pick up every application I install. It doesn't go in the menu. I tried Torrent but it didn't go in the menu. I would start it via CLI but I'm not sure what to type. I thought there might be a security issue but that's only speculation.
I know that ports are supposed to be set via the router settings but I'm sharing the router. I might go to a relative's home and try to work on the problem there. I can go in the router there. But, I can have nothing set and just start downloading with default settings in Windows so I thought it can't be a ports problem. Unless? I'm at a loss and have no other theories. Debian and other distros want you to download their OS via torrent so to not even have it work.

I use Transmission to download torrents off the internet. The problem is whenever I start the download, I cannot access the internet via my web browsers, Chrome AND Firefox. Altho, I can use Pidgin or Empathy to communicate. Why should I do ? I am assuming it is causing some sorta congestion .. I tried giving the downloads "low" priority, applying temporary speed limits but it doesn't help.

Maybe some torrent client for Linux can understand the metadata generated by a Windows client. Or maybe there is a Web/Desktop client that works in both systems. Is there any way to do that?I use uTorrent for Windows, and I haven't used any torrent client on my Ubuntu 11.04 yet. But if the solution uses other client for Windows, it will work for me.

I have Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope running on my home PC (dual boot with Win XP) and have received notification that this will no longer be supported and I should upgrade to 11.04. I have a slow and costly internet connection at home and don't want to download the upgrade directly onto my computer there. Is it possible to download the upgrade somewhere else and burn to a CD to run in my home computer? I see I can do this for a new install but was wondering if it is possible for an upgrade?

I have quite fast Internet connection, 100mbit, and I'm able to take advantage of the entire bandwidth that I'm paying for. When I, however, use Transmission as torrent client and download a torrent faster than, 7-8 Mbyte/second, my hard drive is spinning all the time and my desktop becomes sporadically unresponsive, load average gets high and I'm pretty much sure the Transmission-application is the cause to this, somehow. It must be some strange way it cashes stuff...I don't know.
I'm, either way, not experiencing anything like that with any other torrent client in Linux (or Windows for that matter). It's not that I'm tied to Transmission, in fact, I prefer rtorrent and use it anytime I can, it's just that some stupid torrent sites are giving me Transmission as the only client option when I'm using Linux, so I have to stick to it those times. I have quite fast system, Core Duo 3ghz, 4gb ram, 500 gb 7200rpm 16MB cache WD hard drive, etc...so the hardware certainly shouldn't be a problem.
