Fedora Installation :: Torrent Downloads Repeatedly Fail Checksum?
Nov 27, 2009
I'm trying to upgrade to F11, and I'm having trouble. I attempted to download the x86_64 DVD .iso image by bit torrent, and it seemed okay, but when I started the installation the DVD failed the initial integrity check. I tried a second time with another DVD and got the same result.I tried running md5sum on the .iso image, but the response did not match what was in the CHECKSUM file that came with the .iso image -- should it? I tried downloading a live DVD image for comparison and found the same result - the response to the md5sum command did not match what was listed in the CHECKSUM file.Should these checksums match, or am I comparing apples and oranges? I thought the bit torrent client was supposed to check the files, but I'm not sure about that.

Using a 10.04 LTS installation disc, fresh are my install Firefox, multiple software, and the software updater thing did not work. Figured maybe I messed something up. I installed 10.04 LTS about 6 times from scratch, no other OS on the system. They all had issues loading software, I click on whatever it goes to launch and nothing ever comes up. I started doing updates through the command prompt using
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Then multiple packages broke. Tried sudo apt-get -f install but I keep getting an error that openoffice and firefox fail their checksum. Click on upgrade by 10.10 version gives me the screen that says are you sure, with all the information for the distro and then brings up a window that says download 2 out of 2 and it also crashes. So I figured alright, maybe the CD version I have is messed up. I downloaded the 10.10 iso image and burned it three times. Two of my live cds take me boot me to the purple ubuntu starting screen but nothing is displayed except for a little icon with a keyboard and the disabled person at the bottom. Then my computer reboots it does that continuously.

Some time ago I read a discussion in /r/linux and someone mentioned a script that checks new messages in IRC channel (in irssi client) and if they contain announce urls for torrents, they are passed to a torrent client (rtorrent) for downloading. Sadly, I didn't bookmark it, nor I could find it now. Maybe someone has a similar script?

Recent FC10 totally clean install. Fully updated using yum.
Using gui /system/administration/network I set up my DNS to the two IP addresses I've been given.
$service network restart
cat /etc/resolv.conf and the secondary DNS has changed to the IP address of my
gateway (router, at 192.168.2.x)
I.e. something is overwriting resolv.conf
Prior to this install, I'd been successfully using fixed IP on the 192.168.2.x range quite happily. Now it only works on DHCP and DNS seems to take an age.

The CheckSum file I downloaded for Fedora 12 contains a header line indicating the checksums are SHA1 when in fact they are SHA256.

I just downloaded the "Fedora-11-i686-Live-KDE.iso" and "Fedora-11-i686-Live.iso". I want to check if the downloaded files correct or not. I can use a tool to get the md5 sum of the downloaded files. But I want to compare them with the original ones.

I've downloaded the
Fedora-12-x86_64-disc1.iso
Fedora-12-x86_64-disc2.iso
Fedora-12-x86_64-disc3.iso
Fedora-12-x86_64-disc4.iso
Fedora-12-x86_64-disc5.iso
files. I then downloaded "Fedora-12-x86_64-CHECKSUM" and ran sha1sum.exe on my iso files and compared the results. They were wrong for all 5 iso files. Figuring there was a problem with the way I was trying to evaluate the checksum I burned a CD with the disc1.iso. I received a "INSERT A BOOT DISK" error from my machine. I then tried downloading the disc1.iso again and ran checksum on my newly downloaded file and get the same checksum on both the old and new disc1.iso files.
When I run:
I get the response:
It seems to me the checksum value should be:
What am I doing wrong? I've installed many different distros in the past and am pretty sure I burned the iso file not just copied it to the CD.

I'm running a Latitude E4300 with the Intel 4500HD integrated graphics. Lately, the display has started to flash on and off several times an hour. Usually all I have to do is move the mouse or hit a key, and the display comes back (the back light is on when this happens).
Once and awhile, my monitor goes into standby when this happens, but if I turn the LCD (a Dell 2007FP) off and back on, the display is back. This happens when using the internal LCD at 1280x800 or my external monitor hooked up via E-Dock.
I've tried a couple different monitors, and they all work fine. I have another hard drive for this machine that I have Windows 7 loaded on, and it works for hours and hours without exhibiting any video related errors.

When I install NVIDIA Driver 9500GT on my Fedora 13 (64 bits), they ask me to install "gcc" package. And the "gcc" package itself needs more dependencies. I managed to install all of those dependencies, except "libc.so.6"
I couldn't find the "libc.so.6" on internet. It looks like the "libc.so.6" and "Glibc" package the same or what?

I recently got a shiny new msi notebook and I decided I wanted to dual-boot Linux on it (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit). I started with Ubuntu, when that failed (the GUI wouldn't install properly) I tried Mint. It worked fine, but for some reason, I hate Mint. I deleted the Mint partitions and attempted to claim back the free space in a new partition for Windows 7. For some unbeknownst reason, it failed. Since I didn't desparately need the hard drive space, I said "screw it" and went about my day.
After seeing a friend using Fedora, I figured "why not?" So I downloaded F14 and burned it to a disc and booted it. All went well so I tried installing it. The install process went normal until I reached this screen: I press "Next", and I get this: (Full text here) I start to think that anaconda has something to do with my hard drive partitions, so I open Logical Volume Manager.
Partition 1 is a recovery partition (12 GB).
Partition 2, I have no idea, but it's only .1 GB.
Partition 3 is the Windows 7 partition (172.29 GB).
Partition 4 is 113.20 GB.
Unpartitioned space is 113.20 GB.
I know this can't be right, because my hard drive is only 320 GB (and those GB aren't even "real" GB) and the partitions add up to 410.79 GB. I'm thinking that Partition 4 and Unpartitioned space are the same thing, and the existence of the Partition 4 record is the aftermath of the failure to reclaim the disk space for Windows. So how do I go about fixing this (getting rid of Partition 4 or finding a work-around)?

I am trying to Install Fedora 11 from a live install CD. I know it works because I tried it on another system. After the little Balloon that shows its loading completes the screen scrambles, later a mouse pointer appears then freezes shortly after. When I remove Quiet from Kernel Params. Lots of text then Samething.. Scrambled Screen the Freeze. I have tried adding the Following Parameters to the Kernel (nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, acpi=noirq, noapic). This sounds like a common problem with ATI based graphics and all answers seem to point the "nomodeset" and the "xdriver=vesa" but they dont seem to help.

I have a dual-boot Fedora / WinXP laptop, and the F13 upgrade failed soon after the 'upgrade' option was selected in the menu. The problem was that the installer could not recognise the ...ntfs-3g.. entry for WinXP in /etc/fstab.The fix is simply to change this entry to ...ntfs... and the install will then proceed OK.

I looked into /var/log/vboxadd-install.log, saw:

I check the path /usr/src/vboxfs-3.1.8 exist there right, so why do I get this kind of error?

I burned a new disk with ubuntu 11.04 image and I managed to boot the live cd using my external monitor, I've installed and went into my monitor settings, it displays my external monitor as unknown and doesn't even detect my laptop screen. Changing the driver being used in my xorg.conf to vesa allows me to boot properly and ubuntu uses my laptop screen (yet it still detects it as an unknown monitor). Installing any nvidia driver and using it breaks my system. Heres an image of the laptop when using the nvidia driver (btw I can still hear the ubuntu sound that plays when its reached the logon prompt).

I did a fresh install of Fedora 10 x86, then updated fully with yum, then did a preupgrade to F11 Beta. The download of the rpms works fine but the preupgrade reboot fails with:
Error downloading kickstart file
Unable to download the kickstart file.....
proceed as an interactive installation
hd:UUID=8f4a.....(uuidhere) ...05a8:/upgrade/ks.cfg
I have a SCSI disk so I'm suspicious preupgrade is having trouble accessing it? That prefix "hd" looks suspicious, should that be:
Code:
sda:UUID=8f4a.....(uuidhere) ...05a8:/upgrade/ks.cfg
or maybe
Code:
sd:UUID=8f4a.....(uuidhere) ...05a8:/upgrade/ks.cfg

I now have Windows XP installed, with 30GB of free space on the end of my hard rive. If I install linux there, will it cause Windows XP to fail? Last time I tried this, it says hal.dll was not found. However, that may have been caused by having five partitions. Do u think its safe now that I'll only have 4? Will Windows XP fail if I put in a partition in the free space?
Why does it says I'm using Safari in Windows, I'm using Google Chrome

Each lists my card as being supported but each time the install fails and I have to Alt - Kitaral - f2 to get to the command line log in.

I have downloaded both fedora 11 64bit DVD iso and fedora 12 64 bit live cd,but the install failed on a brand new AMD Athlon II X4. The f11 was polite and said there were errors in the media, but f12 displayed an illegible line of text and stopped. On prior installs there was a obvious checksum value to verify that the download was good So far I have been unable to find one. I'd like to verify that the download is good before I buy more crappy cd's that don't work.

Suse asks me to install it anyway but then decides to not let me install it, only leaves skip, cancel and retry. when doing skip, suse also managed to fcuk up Grub and removes all the entries for suse. Installing the driver doing like ATI Proprietary Driver Install Guide | openSuSE 11.2 vanilla - openSUSE Forums
fails miserably too. the free radeon driver on my FirePro V7750 on the Dell 6400 still has artefact all over screen, I hardly can type., this linux installing is still quite frustrating. or should I try Linux maybe in a year again?

I am trying to install Unbuntu 11.04 on a Via raid 0. I have windows already setup and it boots fine, but Ubuntu does not see the raid set. Running dmraid -ay (or any valid switch with dmraid) returns :
sudo dmraid -ay -v
ERROR: via: invalid checksum on /dev/sdb
ERROR: via: invalid checksum on /dev/sda
no raid disks
mainboard is Asus M2V, with 2x Hitachi 250Gb disks in raid 0 configuration set in BIOS. I have a 3rd hard disk on the onboard Marvell 88SE6121 sata controller but this is not seen at all by Ubuntu either. I was thinking of installing it here if Ubuntu does not work the RAID, but no go it would seem. I do remember installing an earlier version of ubuntu on this very same board using RAID 0 (2x 80Gb drives at that time) and the RAID was reconised and worked fine straight from live cd to full install.

I am attempting to upgrade Fedora 12 to 13. I get an error screen that said root could not be found. Four options are given. Not sure exactly their wording, but two appear to allow you to cancel the other two warn that if you reinitialize you will wipe out all data.
I have a Vista partition and a Fedora partition. I've added the vista ntfs partition to fstab with no help. All of the partition use the long UUID form. I added the root location (root (hd0,5) to the upgrade menu item in grub.conf and that didn't work either.
I'm reluctant to proceed for fear of initializing the entire drive. I could live with installing Fedora 13 over the existing partitions.
