Debian Installation :: Why Torrent File And Checksums / Signatures Are HTTP

Feb 29, 2016

What's the point of checking if my file was tampered (as it says in the debians page [URL] ....) if the signatures are downloaded over http? Didn't the recent incident with Linux Mint had cleared our mind about these things?

Networking :: Craft A Valid Http/1.1 Request For Getting Http Headers (not The Html File Itself)

Sep 27, 2010

Using netcat, nc(1), craft a valid http/1.1 request for getting http headers (not the html file itself!) for the main index page of www dot aalto dot fi. What request method did you use? Which headers did you need to send to the server? What was the status code for the request? Which headers did the server return? Explain the purpose of each header.

nc -v www dot aalto dot fi 8080
HEAD / HTML/1.1
host: www dot aalto dot fi
And it returns:
200 OK
Content-Length: 858
Content-Type: text/html
Last-Modified: Thu, 02 Sep 2010 12:46:01 GMT
[Code]....

I really don't know what does it mean. Question 2: Using netcat, nc(1), start a bogus web server listening on the loopback interface port 8080. Verify with netstat(, that the server really is listening where it should be. Direct your browser to the bogus server and capture the User-Agent: header "Direct your browser to the bogus server and capture the User-Agent: header" I don't understand this question.

Ubuntu Installation :: Get A Torrent Download App On Computer For File Sharing?

I am a relative moron when it comes to using Ubuntu. This is a relatively old machine and I purchased it from a friend. She said Ubuntu was a good choice to maximize space as opposed to XP. I want to find a way (and maybe an example of one) to get a torrent download app on my computer for file sharing. I found one that uses Java, but when I tried to install java it was utter failure.

Software :: Using Dd To Find Out Cdroms Checksums?

Mar 9, 2010

I issue the command 'dd if=/dev/hdc|head -c 4294607004|m5sum'. But the checksum I get is not the correct one. Its not the checksum of the first 4294607004 bytes in /dev/hdc. And the message dd outputs is

8387904 records in
8387904 records out

Then I find 8387904 * 512 (512 because 4294607004 / 8387904 = 512.0000186) = 4294606848, which falls short of 4294607004 by a few bytes. But 8387905 * 512 > 4294607004. So I issue 'dd if=/dev/hdc ibs=512 count=8387905|head -c 4294607004|md5sum'. the message is still the same:

8387904 records in
8387904 records out

OpenSUSE Install :: Zypper Stopped With Checksums Changes?

Dec 17, 2010

I usually install or upgrade using Ctrl + alt + F1 console in init3 mode.Despite this and while using # zypper re && zypper up i notice that often times upgrade is stopped when checksums are changed. Last day 250 packages could not be upgraded because of maybe 5 packages with changed checksums. Sometimes clearing zypper cache with zypper cc does the trick but not all the time it works, I had to force install manually to be able to upgrade. Is it possible that upgrade is not impeded by such changes ? If not is it at least possible to have a list of changed checksum packages to be able to remove them or install them manually more easily ?

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up A Home File/torrent Server - 9.10

Mar 7, 2010

I've played with ubuntu for quite a while now and i picked up a atom core mini pc for cheap so i thought i'd make a hobby in setting up a simple server to store files on, access files on my xbmc enabled xbox and download torrents whilst i'm at work though the torrents can wait for future projects though i installed ubuntu server 9.10, i'm aware it's CL only, anyway thus far i've managed to set up the ipaddress of it and make it fixed i'm not sure of what to do with hosts at the moment, reading on it isn't making much sense of it's purpose or layout so i've left it as is i permenently mounted a fat32 partition to /media/stuff and changed permissions to 0777 only have one user on it, myself installed samba smbfs smbclient and an openssh server, and can do all the terminal stuff from my normal pc my current issue lies with samba, with gnome desktop i've never had TOO many problems with sharing folders, however i'm stuck where to proceed in regards to editing smb.conf as there's a lot of options, some of which i'm not sure i need

- I've changed the workgroup to home
- under authentication i have security = share
- i added the following section

Code:

Anyway on my windows xp pro machine, i can access \thork which is the machine and i see 'media-stuff' which is a start i guess, but im refuesed access automatically.

Debian :: Cannot Download Any Stuff Via Torrent?

Jun 13, 2010

I cannot use any torrent programs because nothing will download. Every figure will sit at '0' indefinitely...forever! I can boot up my Windows XP install and it will start within a few seconds. I am just trying to figure out what's going on. Another problem is that my LXDE desktop doesn't seem to pick up every application I install. It doesn't go in the menu. I tried Torrent but it didn't go in the menu. I would start it via CLI but I'm not sure what to type. I thought there might be a security issue but that's only speculation.

I know that ports are supposed to be set via the router settings but I'm sharing the router. I might go to a relative's home and try to work on the problem there. I can go in the router there. But, I can have nothing set and just start downloading with default settings in Windows so I thought it can't be a ports problem. Unless? I'm at a loss and have no other theories. Debian and other distros want you to download their OS via torrent so to not even have it work.

Security :: Files Sizes And Checksums Changed, But Not Time Stamps?

Nov 24, 2010

For the second time in a week, I have set up an unmanaged CentOS 5.5 Storm Server at StormOnDemand, only to discover a ton of unauthorized changes to binaries (updated file checksums and sizes) on the server shortly thereafter. The time stamps do NOT change. If the time stamps did change, I would be hunting down ahat was doing some auto-updates. But the time stamps are not changing. This leads me to believe that either these servers are suffering from:1. A virus or hacker is compromising the box.2. system corruption.3. Something else? To eliminate the possibility of number 1, I toasted the first server and started over with a new server and enabled their firewall from the start to only allow access for two IPs via SSH... my IP and my biz partner's.

Then, one of the first things we installed was a system we created that maintains a snapshot of most directories on the system so that it can be used to watch the live directories for changes. At 4:07am (server time) this morning, we received notice from this system that a massive number of files had changed in these directories. Again, no file time stamps changed. So, my question is this... is there any legitimate reason in a fairly standard CentOS 5.5 install that would cause so many files to change?
