I've got a non-vital sshfs filesystem in my fstab (by non-vital I mean just files that I access on-demand).However, the fstab file seems to get read and things try to mount before the network has been brought up. I recently switched to Kubuntu 10.10 from Arch, and Arch didn't display this behaviour.I'm wondering if it's possible to make it mount the sshfs filesystem AFTER the network has been brought up?
View 2 RepliesI am struggling with getting an sshfs mount mounted on system boot. I have a script that mounts the sshfs for "userA". When userA runs the script all is well - user A can access the remote filesystem, root user can't see it as expected. The basic command is: sshfs userA@remote host:/home/userA /home/userA/mountdir -p 21212 -o password_stdin < passwordfile. I can prepend the sshfs command in the script with su - userA -c and when I run this script logged in as root all is well, userA has access and all is well. If I then put this script in /etc/init.d and reference it properly in the rc. directories the mount doesn't happen. If I prepend the sshfs command with sudo, same thing. Logged in as root I can run the script and UserA has access. Run the script in /etc/init.d during startup and the mount doesn't happen. Echoing text to a log file shows that the script is being executed but no mount happens.

I'm trying to set up sshfs on a desktop/fileserver so that I can mount its HDD's I use for storage on my laptops. My issue seems to be getting permission to write to the mounted drives. I just keep getting permission denied. here is what I think are some relevant tidbits.

I can chmod the mount on the server to 777 but as soon as I mount the HDD to the server all write permission just goes *poof* and its back to "drwxr-xr-x".Chown seems either, it just wont stick.
I'd like to add a user to my server that will only have access to a mount point over sshfs. Is there any way I can provide them this access without actually giving them permission to open a terminal on my server? I tried /bin/false and /sbin/nologin already, but /bin/false didn't allow the mount point to be made and /sbin/nologin prevented a login completely (also stopped the mount point from working).
View 6 Replies View RelatedWe recently had a serious loss of data because of SSHFS mounting. A user in our group mounted the entire home directory of our server (/home). This was so they could easily move between user folders to read/write data from other people involved in the same project. They then deleted several folders that were not in there home directory.
Now I know this is a bad idea and that there should be a dedicated "projects" folder where everyone collaborates and does their stuff. Such a folder/system exits but I can't make them use it. My question: Is there anyway to configure SSHFS such that the only thing the user's can mount is their home directory? Obviously this won't fix the problem since they can sym-link to other folders but I've got to start somewhere. Perhaps there's a better solution (one that doesn't involve me nagging users about proper form).
I'm trying to install Debian 5.03 from the netinstall on a usb flash disk. When it gets to the network initialization step, it fails and cannot get an IP from DHCP. Manual configuration does not work either. Out of desperation I installed windows to see if the network device was broken (this is a new motherboard), however it works fine without drivers even. Invoking lspci shows that it is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Etherent Controller (revision ff)

Earlier I have no problems when I install opensuse. After installation the network runs and I can run online updating in yast for the system. But since a few version it doesn't work after installation and I don't know why. I think maybe the errors could happen because I have no

I've used wake on lan and SSH on the local network for some time now. I also used SSH to mount a filesystem (SSHFS / sftp, same thing, right?) and I could forward X11, loved it. I used both these options for my convenience. So I decided it was time to open up some ports on my router (Linksys WRT320n running dd-wrt) and try to set up a remote connection. This actually worked after some time, so I'm now able to turn on my home computer from the Internet (school in my case) and then log in to it through SSH. I set this up using other ports then the default ports. Something like this (these are not the actual ports I use, just examples):
port 2112 -> port 9 (for wol, wake on lan)
port 2113 -> port 22 (for SSH)
This information might be useful: I set this up using public and private keys. This is necessary for SSHFS to work properly I think and it also makes it more secure. And then I found (and had some presumptions that this was going to happen) that both SSHFS and X11 were not working. I'd rather not open up more ports on the router for security's sake though, so I'm asking for other solutions. And if there really aren't any other solutions then which ports to forward. And if forwarding is really necessarily then how to make the client use port 2114 for SSHFS and 2115 for X11 so I can forward those ports to the default ports.
I know that SSHFS is the way to mount the file and directory on remote server. It has many advantages such as security, convenience, fast and so on. I wonder if there is disadvantage of SSHFS and the alternative to it? I am looking forward to your reply.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop running Ubuntu 8.04. I installed 10.04 on my laptop. When I mount my desktop music folder on my laptop and transfer files, they now only go at 100-200 KB/s. When I had 9.10 installed, they transferred at 1-2 MB/s.
This is the command I use to mount the directory:
sshfs matt@169.254.6.233:/home/matt/Music/ /home/matt/Music/desktop/

I have a server with a /data/ directory, everything in the /data/ folder has "-rwxrw-rw- 1 root root" permissions.all works fine, multiple users are mounting this over a lan and everyone is able to modify files. However I would like to be able to access the /data/music/ directory from the internet.
Is it possible to configure sshfs to only accept logins from a user restricted to reading the /data/music directory, or would it be possible to tunnel nfs over ssh in such a way that everyone on the lan 192.168.0.xxx has unrestricted access to the data directory, but something coming from outside only has read access to the music directory. Although is one were tunneling nfs over ssh, the nfs mount request would appear to come from the server itself. The router is at 192.168.0.1 and the server is at 192.168.0.3.This Seems very much like what I want to do, however I'm having a bit of trouble getting this to work well with other users mounting with full rights over the lan too.

I could see /etc/modprobe.conf has a line "alias etho e1000e" present. In fact another machine dc7900, installed with Fedora Core 10, detects the card with e1000e as the module.

I have swapped out four known working, different bran network cards. Each one I get the same error as in the subject. If I boot to a Live CD such as CentOs 5.3 LiveCD both Nics are given an IP. This seems to only be happening with my CentOs 5.3 server install.I noticed the CentOS Live CD the Nics were reversed from eth0 to eth1 and eth1 to eth0.
At the moment as of the output of the commands, I am running two identical Nics, since the first one has always worked. I have previously used an rtl8139, 3com c3905-TX, onboard Rhine III based (now disabled) Here are steps I have done to try and figure this out:

I went through the system-config-network-tui. I copied /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 to the ifcfg-eth0 and edited for sanity. and as stated earlier, have swapped out four different nics for eth0, and booted to two different LiveCD's. Both LiveCD's work fine.
I have added a new network card on my Cent OS machine. This is a RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ card. Ethernet card works, but Wireless card activation fails at bootup time. It also fails if I try it again from the Network Configuration UI.

I am trying to share files on my Windows XP Home machine over my P2P network to my Ubuntu netbook. The folder I wish to share is configured in Windows with public permissions. I go to the Files & Folders > Documents and then I click on Network in the Places tab. A Windows Network icon appears, but when I double click it I receive the error message, "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server."

I have a network drive connect to my lan with iomega's iconnect device. I am getting tired of mounting the drive manually each time I want to use it. I would like therefore to have it mounted automatically on boot by placing a line in fstab, but since the computer (a laptop) won't always be connected to my home lan, this might cause problems. Is there a way to list the drive in fstab so if the drive is not present it will just move on?

I can also use the sync function in Krusader but it is so slooooow! Therefore I want to use Grsync but for that the drive needs to be mounted, that is where the problem lies!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the following problem: There are three NFS mounts in /etc/fstab, which are automatically mounted. The network connection runs over NetworkManager. Since NWM brings up the network asynchronously, NFS doesn't mount correctly on the first try, but is loaded soon enough since mount automatically retries until it works.
I can live with the fact that I have an error in my boot messages, since everything is up in time for the user. But, I need a (selfmade) upstart script which depends on the NFS mount being up. Even using "remote-filesystems" as the trigger doesn't help, because the trigger is apparently sent after the first failed try (I checked with cat /proc/mounts in my script, the nfs mounts are clearly not up.) Can I somehow force the remote mounts to wait until NWM is up, or make the NFS mount emit an event when the mounts really get mounted?
I have a computer, the one I am on now, with Ubuntu 10.10, it should be completely updated... and I can network with other computers, I can access Windows XP and 7 shared locations on other computers, and I can also get Ubuntu on other computers to access this computer's shared files.What I can't do, however, is share my hardrives that are on this computer, I have tried sharing them in /media/ and etc, but it is not working, apparently you have to mount them in some mystical way.
Another problem is getting Windows machines to access Ubuntu computers on the network - which I believe is a Windows problem, so I can figure that out some other time, but importantly, I want to be able to share my hardrives over the network.
If someone can give me some instructions to mounting and sharing hardrives(internal), and even my DVD-Drives, and portable USB devices, would also be fantastic - since, in Windows you can just right click, "share", and it's done.. It is a very useful thing to have, and I don't want to use Windows on this computer anymore, but I have no choice, really, if I can't share my storage to the other computers.
I've, for years, been using a little script, as user, to mount network shares, like this:
mount.cifs //server/Data ~/Data -o username=robertw
Previously it used to be smbmount, but that changed. Anyway, the latest updates have stopped me be able to run this as a user. I tried running it as root and that just won't let me get access to the shares, tells me permission denied. I thought I'd try using fstab. This gives varying degrees of success.
Here are two of the entries:
//server/CAD /mnt/CAD cifs credentials=/etc/samba/auth.server.robertw 0 0
//server/Data /mnt/Data cifs credentials=/etc/samba/auth.server.robertw 0 0
The auth.server.robertw clearly shows my correct username and password.
Now, I can't get into the /mnt/Data directory at all, just says permission denied and I can only read from, but not write to, the /mnt/CAD directory. My /mnt directory is like this.
