Fedora :: Remove Duplicate Menu Items?

Oct 21, 2009

I have Fedora 11 installed-32bit-with xfce installed as the desktop. When I click on the fedora icon for the menu and select Preferences, there are 2 input methods listed even though I did not have any installed.Since there is no menu editor any more, does anybody know how to edit the menu so that I can get rid of these entries?

I uninstalled xmms player quite a long time ago. I think when I had hardy heron. Currently I'm on 10.04. When I right click a .mp3 file I still have the option to play with xmms player showing up. Even if I choose an "other application" the xmms player option remains stickied to the top.Does anyone know how I can remove this entry? I did a lot of searching but couldn't find a solution.

Fedora :: Add / Remove Startup Items?

Nov 28, 2010

Okay, two packages in question here: sshd and xrdp.

In the /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory there is a K??sshd link, I'm not really sure why the default is to kill sshd in graphical mode, but it's there. I saw it coincidentally when I went to add an S??xrdp link so that I could have xrdp run when the computer starts. I restarted the computer, and of course, couldn't connect via my Windows Remote Desktop client. A quick ps -e | grep xrdp in a terminal window showed me that xrdp had not, in fact, started.

I hop back in to ??/rc5.d to see if I messed up creating my link and poof. there's no more S??xrdp link, furthermore, the K??sshd link that I had removed was back.

Okay, so Fedora doesn't like you messing with the init links manually... I can dig it, cause there's this nifty gui tool to manage startup items... I go in to that and add entries for sshd and xrdp, calling them via their init scripts so I can make sure everything plays nicely... then restart.

Oh, wait, still no xrdp or sshd running.

If I manually start these servers using their init scripts from a terminal they run fine, no issues, but I don't want to do that, and I think we can all agree that I should't have to. What am I doing wrong? What is the 'proper' way to add servers to the startup process and since entering runlevel 5 apparently kills sshd, how do I prevent that?

Fedora Installation :: Missing Menu Items FC14x86_64?

Dec 10, 2010

At least the DVD I downloaded a few days ago was nothing like the one that was downloaded on release, most worked I'm missing a couple of important things on the gnome menus, nothing on system>preferences or Admin for printing, I had to configure the printer directly with the CUPs admin panel. These no way to edit the menus, right clicking on the bar has no effect, and I haven't form menu-edit in the repos with yumex, or the gnome control pane. Have these been dropped in FC14 ?

Fedora Installation :: FC12 New Install / Top Menu Panel Missing Items

Mar 7, 2010

First off, I have spent several hours searching this and other forums looking for an answer to this, and have tried several things, none of which have fixed this issue. Here is what I'm seeing:I performed a new install of FC12 on a Thinkpad R40, 512Mb RAM, with a 40Gb HDD, 38Gb useable, from a live CD. That leaves a little over 9Gb free for expansion. All went well with the install, but the post-boot upgrade would not complete due to an error with the abrt files. I found a thread discussing this and used the suggested method of performing the updates from a shell, which worked fine. There were LOTS of installations, updates, and replacements, and finally the shell returned "Complete!". After a reboot I was going through the Fedora_12_ User_ Guide.pdf and noticed many items missing from the System Menu as described in section 3.1.1.3 "The System menu". Another thread seemed to address a similar issue with su - then yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment", which I did. It updated over 870 items, then completed with no errors. At this point I logged out and back in, no change, and then tried a reboot, which also did not change anything. Finally, I'm appealing to the community.

General :: Using Sed To Remove Lines With Duplicate ID's?

0,"013A",0.57,260737.674,4379258.94

1,"013A",0.545,260739.891,4379258.87

[Code]....

The problem with uniq is that the last two colums will differ. I don't care about the x/y for any points following the first one.

Programming :: Remove Duplicate Entries On A Row?

Nov 1, 2010

we have a variable LIBS:

LIBS='-lpq -lmysqlclient -lssl -lpthread -lresolv -lssl -lpthread -lresolv'

I'd want to get:

LIBS='-lpq -lmysqlclient -lssl -lpthread -lresolv'

Bear in mind that LIBS can be variable, I mean I need to drop any duplicate and only retain the last one of each different entry. And we must keep the order as is, I must not sort out them.

So, if LIBS is:

LIBS='-lpq -lmysqlclient -lpthread -lresolv -lpthread -lresolv'

I need: LIBS='-lpq -lmysqlclient -lpthread -lresolv'

Programming :: Script To Remove Duplicate Jpg Files

May 25, 2010

Thanks y'all for the great script and explanation. This helped a lot in my own project. I thought I'd share the efforts.The project is this: I've got lots of duplicate JPGs from all the family members who've named the same photo with different names. Since md5sum generates a "fingerprint" based on the file contents, not the name, I want to use the md5sum of each jpg to uniquely name each photo and also remove exact duplicates.

It has the following flaws:
0) it doesn't handle certain non-alphanumerics
1) it keeps both photo-shopped and unaltered photos (different md5s)
2) it (currently) doesn't preserve descriptive filenames.

(For me, removal of duplicates is more important than keeping the filenames. I may change that to concatenate the md5 and the filename.)Please note that the commented "rename" command should be used to strip non-aphanumerics from the file names, and the script should be launched with the commented "find" command.

However, i would like to get rid of the little enveloppe in the menu bar, more precisely in what i think is called the notification area. i have found some stuff online about how I'm supposed to delete a package and restart, quite unsuccessful method really, since the envelope is still there.

Plus whenI right click on the menu bar to pin / unpin items, it doesnt work, all the submenus are greyed out.

Ubuntu :: Where Do The Menu Items In Preferences Come From?

Nov 6, 2010

When I choose System --> Preferences --> Screensaver, it runs x-screensaver instead of gnome-screensaver, BUT, in /usr/share/applications, I have the file:

gnome-screensaver-preferences.desktop

And the contents are:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Screensaver
Comment=Set your screensaver preferences
Icon=preferences-desktop-screensaver
Exec=gnome-screensaver-preferences

[Code]....

So it should be launching gnome-screensaver, not x-scrensaver. Where on earth is x-screensaver getting launched from? I thought the menu was determined by /usr/share/applications. (By the way, I did previously have x-screensaver instead of gnome, I am trying to put it back how it was. I have more-or-less succeeded, except this Menu item which is puzzling me.)

Ubuntu :: Add Different Items To My Side Menu Bar

I don't like Windows 7 Starter, nor Microsoft. I'm in the process of ditching them for Ubuntu. I'm trying, I really am. I've successfully installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition, and I'm now stuck. How the hell do I use this? I can't figure out how to add different items to my side menu bar. I can't figure out which version of Ubuntu I have. The documentation page says, "To check which version of Ubuntu you are running, click System -> About Ubuntu. The first line of the page that loads will tell you the version number, for example Ubuntu 10.04 LTS." I DON'T EVEN HAVE A "SYSTEM" BUTTON! How am I supposed to use this clumsy OS? I can't find any sort of "beginner's guide" or help like that on the internet.

For the past few weeks I have been using the lastest Ubuntu OS. The following menu pops-up during the boot process.

Just recently the menu displays duplicate entries. The first two entries are repeated (see below). What might have caused these duplicate entries to appear and how to correct them? Before this problem occurred I did not issue any sudo commands.
