Debian Configuration :: Apt-get Auto-remove After Installing Jessie

Jun 20, 2015

After installing Jessie, apt-get gives me a huge list of packages with the suggestion to autoremove them. Now, I've tried auto-remove once and was left with a naked Gnome, so I was wondering if there's another way to find out which packages I should keep and which I can safely remove. Is it safe to delete packages that cannot be found using the search function for the stable release? I checked them one by one here URL....How about linux images that won't appear in the above search?

linux-image-3.14-0.bpo.1-amd64
linux-image-3.14-0.bpo.2-amd64
linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.2-amd64
linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64
linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64

How about results shown by deborphan?

Debian Configuration :: How To Load Own Kernel-module (KO) In Jessie

Mar 14, 2016

I built a kernel-module for a new usb wifi-card. This worked well and resulted in a 8821au.ko-file. But now I'm trying to load this kernel module since half an hour and it doesn't work. I copied the ko-file into /lib/modules/3.16.0-4-amd64/kernel/drivers/edimax. If I just type

Code: Select allsudo modprobe 8821au

I get a

Code: Select allmodprobe: FATAL: Module 8821au not found..

But if I enter the full path inside the /lib/modules/3.16.0-4-amd64-folder:

Code: Select allsudo modprobe -v ./kernel/drivers/edimax/8821au.ko

it seems to work:

Code: Select allbuiltin ./kernel/drivers/edimax/8821au.ko.

But lsmod doesn't show me the module after that.

I also added

Code: Select all./kernel/drivers/edimax/8821au.ko

to /etc/modules but this also doesn't seem to work. When booting I get an error-message, but it's too fast to read it and I can't find the right log-file, where the booting-part with the "[ OK ]"-messages is reported.

So my driver is ready, the onliest thing which I can't get working is loading it as a kernel-module.

Debian Installation :: Jessie 8.3.0 Installer Fails To Load Software

Mar 10, 2016

I am trying to clean install Jessie 8.3.0 onto an old PC, where I already have wheezy 7.7 working. I am using the 3 DVD- i386, which passed the integrity check.

Installation goes on smoothly till completing the "Select and Install SW" stage from 1st and 2nd DVD. At this point I get the warning that "Installation step failed, ..", giving the choice to repeat.

When repeated, the process gets completed (without asking for 2nd DVD), the new installation boots normally, but the KDE desktop opens irregularly, with some basic applications missing, and some flaws during certain operations.

The APT does not show any missing/broken link. I tried and repeat the installation with different choices as for kernels and/or desktops, but got the same result. I cannot guess where the problem originates, nor whether it is a known bug of the installer.

X won't start (awesome WM) after upgrading to jessie. It seems to startup up, then just stops. I'm running startx from the command line after logging in. The xorg log (bottom) looks good and I see an exit code of zero.

I do see this in sysout:

Googled around but I can't find anything specific on this one.

Debian Installation :: Fresh Jessie Install - Cinnamon Can't Start

Sep 17, 2014

I recently have started playing with various distros (Mostly just Zorin and Debian) and have been trying to find a GUI I can actually comfortably use without wanting to punch my screen. This lead me to cinnamon which looks like something I could actually use.

I performed a fresh installation of Debian Jessie without the desktop environment and print server (System Utilities or whatever that option is called was left checked) and after the system installed and booted I proceeded to login as the root and install cinnamon. Unfortunately afterwards my system would be nothing but a black screen with a box saying that cinnamon had crashed and was running in fallback mode.

However if I let a fresh installation install the default GUI of xfce and then perform the cinnamon installation, cinnamon will install and run. My question is why doesn't a clean install with cinnamon work but installing cinnamon after another gui does? I don't get any apparent error messages beyond cinnamon crashing and I'm still fairly new to Linux.

Debian Configuration :: How To Auto-start GUI As Root

Sep 28, 2015

I have a "time-server". It's sending time to different devices through different ports/protocols. The problem is that it has no operator and that makes some extra difficulties.

Now when i try to start it using terminal Code: Select allsudo ./myprogram works fine and

Code: Select all./myprogram doesn't work.

It is so because without sudo i have no access to ports. As a result If i add my program to System->Preferences->Startup Applications it has the same problem. So i need to start it as root, auto-start, right after auto-login to system but without entering password cause nobody will do it.

Also I need to start ntpd but it also asks password sometimes I've tried googles but it offer a few ways with entering password that isn't suitable for me or writing some scripts/changing system files but with no example I'm afraid to break it all. So is there a way to start Myprogram and NTPD as root with no password entering?

My system is Debian 6.0.10 Squeeze, Kernel 2.6.32-5-686

Debian Configuration :: Auto Start Proxy On Boot

Aug 13, 2015

I have a debian 8.1.1 server running owncloud and a proxy server at home. I have everything working fine, with one exception. The proxy server won't start on boot. If I ssh into the server, then run "sockd -D" as root, it starts up and runs just fine. Any guides I find refer to the init.d script method that worked in Wheezy, but that isn't working. I think it has to do with Jessie switching to systemd? I had used someone elses script in init.d, and ran update-rc.d, but it still doesn't start.

With Jessie, how can I make "sockd -D" execute on system startup?

Debian Multimedia :: Compiz Refuses To Auto Start Properly (with Gnome)

Apr 16, 2011

How to get compiz to auto-start. What seems to be the generally accepted method (from what a few google searches and the debian wiki tell me) of using gconf-editor and changing the window manager from 'gnome-wm' to 'compiz' in desktop > gnome > session > required_components doesn't change anything. The only method I found that did not involve using a terminal and running 'compiz --replace' every time I boot the computer was to add compiz and fusion-icon to the gnome startup apps, but this causes unwanted flickering (it starts metacity and then replaces it with compiz, ie it's simply automating what I would do with the terminal). Autostarting the fusion-icon alone does not start compiz, although it allows me to start it from it's menu if I right click the icon. Note that I sometimes use fluxbox as well, so starting it on boot isn't really an option either.

Perhaps this can be useful :
compiz:
Installed: 0.8.4-4
Candidate: 0.8.4-4
gnome-session:
Installed: 2.30.2-3
Candidate: 2.30.2-3

Debian Installation :: Upgrade Etch To Lenny: No Version Bump, Auto-start Services?

Feb 24, 2010

On my debian web server I curently have ImageMagick 6.3.7 08/07/09 Q16 since this is an old version of imagemagick i wanted to upgrade my system that still runs etch, and afterwards upgrade imagemagick. I can not see what version the current lenny imagemagick package has, but I assume it is newer then 6.3.7, no?

When i ugraded I found out that my apt-sources used stable rather than etch. So I already had a mix of lenny and etch I suppose. I then had > cat /etc/debian_version 4.0 Before I upgraded I changed my apt sources from stable to etch, updated the package-tools and did a dist-upgrade (for details, I followed these instructions). After restarting I have still 4.0 as debian version. Also uname -r is 2.6.17. How can I do a correct update?.

Also my services were not started (ftp, ssh, apache2), so I asked my hoster to start the ssh service. This morning everything was up again, but it seems like nobody there have had a look at this. How do I absolutely ensure that my ssh service is start at boot. It is a remote webserver, so I need at least this service to be running.

Debian Configuration :: VPN PPTP Load On Start And Route All Traffic Through Ppp0?

Mar 28, 2016

I am in serious situation involving PPTP protocol VPN in Debian 8 Jessie stable. I recently became a paid VPN subscriber. Using PPTP; Is there a way to automatically route all traffic through ppp0? Im getting the vpn service killed (ip address goes back to normal unmasked state) whenever there is a power outage (modem reset) and there are alot of those where I live, Im going to get astabilizer and I need a software solution for the situation as well. Theres gotta be a way to route all traffic through the VPN route ppp0 . I tried adding persist and maxfail 0 to the pptp config file but it did not do what i wanted.

Here's my peer configuration file :

pty "pptp blabla.net --nolaunchpppd"
name blablabla
password blablabla
remotename PPTP
file /etc/ppp/options.pptp
require-mppe-128
refuse-eap noauth
persist
maxfail 0

On a second note, its clear to add that I basically need a way to also auto load the line

pppd call blabla.net
and
route add default dev ppp0

On system startup by default so the computer does not use "Wired" connection ^at all^ when not through ppp0. Any other way of not losing VPN anonymity ever due to hardware malfunction.

Is there a way to do this? Ive looked on the net and everything seems like its either from the nineties or can fry my pc , Im no debian expert, less than a year at linux..

Need it to use wired only if ppp0 is being used so if its no vpn, no connection at all period,
