I'm not that new in Linux I've been using for years since 2010 mostly, and formatted a number of flash drives with allegedly fat32 fs however, this time I need to be sure I'm formatting it as fat32 for experimental reasons and I can't seen to find a mkfs.fat32, both vfat and fat are fat16 and I don't know what msdos does...

View 1 Replies View Relatedi needed to change my external hard drive's file system from ext3 to fat32, to use it in windows, which i did the simple way: i shrunk the ext3 partition, made a fat32 partition, copied the files over, removed the ext3 and made the fat32 bigger. unfortunately, while gparted was making the partition larger, my computer shut down. i lost all my files and the partition messed up immediately. i made a new fat32 partition, after deleting the old one, but noticed that gparted was showing 100 gigs already in use (???). so now i have a 300 gb hard drive with only 200 gb i can use; i ran df to make sure gparted wasn't messing up, but indeed it shows the partition as being only 200 gigs in size. i haven't tried making any other kind of partition yet, such as ext3, for fear of losing my files again, and because it wouldn't be permanent anyway, because i need those files in windows and stupid microsoft won't make their OS ext3 compatible.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to format 4 GB sd memory using mkfs.vfat. I want to use the card both in linux and windows so I am formatting with Vfat filesystem. When I format the card from command line with "mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/mmcblk1" I am getting a warning message like "unable to get drive geometry, using default 255/63" but the data in the card is erased.
But when I mount the card and checks for the size using df -h its showing 1 GB instead of 4 GB. how to format the SD memory card or any other alternate way to format the card.
There is no obvious format command when I right-click on the drive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got some trouble trying to format a SD card. I tried to format it in the GUI and the terminal, but couldn't make it. I couldn't even copy or move any file to the directory in the SD card, even logged as root.
It's a SD card from a digital camera. When I insert it in the camera, it says the card is blocked, so that it's not possible to take any picture.
I tried using "fdisk" to set a new fyle system in it, and tried "mkdosfs" trying to format it under the current file system.
For the last several weeks i've been trying KDE and it's been working quite fine. There are however several minor issues with KDE.
First - how can i format a usb stick? In GNOME after the usb stick has been plugged in one just have to right click on it and select "Format". Here i don't see such an option. I googled it and i read somewhere that the tool for this would be KDE partition manager. I installed it but it looks like an overkill for the task. KDE partition manager is high level tool like GParted, whereas i'm looking for something that integrates into the desktop so i can just right click on the usb drive and select format. Besides KDE partition manager asks for a root password which is logical because it can format all your partitions. However i don't see the need for a root password when one is going to format a usb drive.
Second - i tried to use my micro sd card yesterday and while it mounted automatically i couldn't write anything on it or delete any of the files on it ( didn't have this problem with the usb stick though). How can i change that? I have a default Debian install with a nearly default KDE 4.6.5. In GNOME the SD card was always mounted writable by default.
Third - i am using Iceweasel, Rhythmbox and GIMP which are GTK applications. To make them look OK in KDE i installed gtk2-engines-oxygen and kde-config-gtk-style and i also installed the Oxygen KDE Firefox theme (from here [URL]). I then configured the GTK applications to use the oxygen engine and Rhythmbox and GIMP look perfectly OK (i've attached a screenshot at the bottom of my post) however Iceweasel doesn't look completely OK. The problem is that the color scheme of the window is slightly darker than the color scheme of the upper window border - i've attached screenshots of Rhythmbox and Iceweasel so you can compare. I've tried KDE 4.7 with Arch Linux and Firefox there looks OK just like Rhythmbox. It is a small detail but it bugs me...
Fourth - i have problem with the KDE theme for Firefox which i've installed. Without it Iceweasel doesn't look that good. With it, the find menu (activated with ctrl+f) doesn't work - instead of the regular search field just a very small box appears. I've posted a screenshot for that as well.
Is there a file system that both Mac OSX 10.5 and linux can read/write for large files (like 4gb files)? My desktop is Ubuntu and I run most from there, but I want to back up my MacBook and linux box on the same external hard drive. Seems there are some (paid) apps for Mac that will mount NTFS but I'm wondering if there is just a shared files ystem that will work for both.

I have tried mounting and unmounting - makes no difference.
I have been sent some file sI need to open but they are in .pub format. Having them sent in another format is not an option. I need to open them on Linux. Is there a tool which I can convert it into another format (preferably PDF) rather than having to mess around getting publisher installed on wine etc etc?

I've tried inserting another card with only one fat32 partition and the system doesn't mount it. Both cards are visible in gparted byt not in "Places" menu.

My machine will stay up for long periods of time, or sometimes only a few mins, also it doesn't seem related to just using a particular program. As you can imagine this is leading to a bag of woes. After reading on a forum about logs I went to /var/log and in the system log found the following entry . . .
"Jan 10 18:46:10 jon-desktop kernel: [ 92.718896] Either the lower file is not in a valid eCryptfs format, or the key could not be retrieved. Plaintext passthrough mode is not enabled; returning -EIO"
This is repeated multiple times and having checked after a few crashes seems to be the central problem. Being specific about the crashes, they freeze the entire system. Can't ctl-alt-del and sound loops, have to hard reset. I have a feeling that when I first installed Ubuntu 9.10 I selected to use an encrypted file system but have a feeling that I didn't set it up correctly. Not sure exactly what I didn't do but I seem to remember it was to do with generating a passphrase. So . . .
1) What is this error from my logs?
2) Is it linked to me not setting up the encrypted filesystem correctly?
3) Is there a way to check the settings / sort them out properly?
4) Is there documentation for my dullard state which can aid me in this, or is it quite simple?
I'm having an US American date format that drives me totally nuts, like MM/DD/YY. Today is 1/13/15. It seems to appear across the system (GNOME 3), from Skype to IceDove to Nautilus. So my hope is there is a central instance where I can change this. I would prefer to have 13-Jan-15 or 13-Jan-2015 or at the very least 13/01/2015, i.e. in some order consistent with my European brain.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried to install Win 7 from the DVD and it didn't work at first because my Ubuntu is not in NTFS which is require for Win 7 to start installing. But the Win 7 doesn't have the option to format the harddrive for me so I went back to Ubuntu to format it.

The storage drive in the screenshot below the one I want to format but if I format that while I am running the Ubuntu OS, what will happen? Can someone guide me what to do? I can see there are two seperate virtual drives in that one 320GB SATAII harddrive. I want to erase the one with the more space because I'll install the Win 7 on it since it requires 15GB+ space. I do not want to have a dual boot by the way so I also want to make sure no Ubuntu is left out.
I have a Windows 7 partition, a fat32 partition that I use for moving data between Windows and Linux, and an Ubuntu partition. On the Ubuntu partition, I can right click on a text file and the top of the menu says "open with 'gedit'." On the fat32 partition, the same action says just "open," and the "open with" submenu doesn't include gedit.
If I right-click and choose properties on the same file, the "open with" tab shows gedit as the default file association. So that's weird... anyone else seen anything like this?

I have just recovered my desktop Ubuntu system, thanks to SuperGrub, and Larryfroot, who pointed me to it. It had crashed due to an incomplete install to a pen drive, but prior to this I had made some changes to my partition layout, and now if such moves could cause the problems I'm having now.I wanted to be able to access my pictures, music, and projects while testing different Linux distros from CD or pen drive (DreamLinux looks much like the Mac interface, which I like, it's rated for speed, gotta try), but I've not been able to do that from any which I've tried yet. I learned somewhere that replacing the unused bulk of the OS partition with a big FAT32, and moving your files to that drive should make them accessible to most systems. I just viewed my files from the DreamLinux distro CD, so it seems to be working. I knew the action on this type of partition would be slower, and it really is when I move files to it, so is there a better way to get what I want than this?I have since had the following annoyances from Ubuntu's Nautilus file browser, and am wondering if the drive changes had anything to do with the following:
1. I am getting error messages when I try to move files to this drive through the Nautilus GUI file browser, but then these errors are wierdly negated when the file transfer is performed anyway. Well, I should be happy that it does what I ask, but where are these false error messages coming from?
2. It gets even more strange - when viewing files on Fat32 through Nautilus, in my Ubuntu hard drive partition, the file window has a banner which states "These files are on a Picture CD". Huh??? I know where I moved my files to, and they are not on CD! What is a "Picture CD" anyway?
Can anyone find a logical explanation for these weird messages, or does it look as much to you like corruption damage?

I have a new machine with an Intel 82579lm network card (needs an e1000e driver, I believe). I got Debian installed, but it doesn't have access to the Internet, because it needs a driver for that card. So, I managed to download the card driver on another computer and transfer it to this computer. Problem is that when I run 'make install' for the card driver, it turns out that my Debian install doesn't have 'make'.
I could compile the card source on another computer with Debian. Problem is that computer has a different architecture (old amd 32 bit machine vs. new intel i7 64 bit) than the machine with the problem card. Am guessing that the compiled driver module won't work on a different kind of machine.
Another possibility is to check in synaptic on my old 32-bit machine and use "Generate package download script" to determine where synaptic is getting the 'make' package from and all its dependencies. I also would need to modify the downloads to get the packages for the 64bit machine. *Assuming* that a) the dependencies in Synaptic on the old 32-bit machine will be the same as for a 64bit machine and b) I correctly identify all necessary packages and their proper names for the amd64 architecture, I should be able to move the files to the new machine and compile what I need to compile.
I have a lenny system up and running, my CF-card reader is supported and I can mount a 1GB card. My PC _can_ boot from CF cards, I verified... My Linux resides in sda3 (other partition is XP). How would I transfer the partition to a cf card? I tried using dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/dev/sdb1, but as that doesnt work I have the feeling there's more to do... Maybe install GRUB on the CF-Card? Change some paths after copying?
