I'm trying to move a tar file from my ext3 linux box onto a FAT32 usb flash drive but keep getting
mv: failed to preserve ownership for `/dir/blah.tar.gz': Operation not permitted
i needed to change my external hard drive's file system from ext3 to fat32, to use it in windows, which i did the simple way: i shrunk the ext3 partition, made a fat32 partition, copied the files over, removed the ext3 and made the fat32 bigger. unfortunately, while gparted was making the partition larger, my computer shut down. i lost all my files and the partition messed up immediately. i made a new fat32 partition, after deleting the old one, but noticed that gparted was showing 100 gigs already in use (???). so now i have a 300 gb hard drive with only 200 gb i can use; i ran df to make sure gparted wasn't messing up, but indeed it shows the partition as being only 200 gigs in size. i haven't tried making any other kind of partition yet, such as ext3, for fear of losing my files again, and because it wouldn't be permanent anyway, because i need those files in windows and stupid microsoft won't make their OS ext3 compatible.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Debian Lenny 5.0.3 with a stock 2.6.26-2-amd64 kernel, and have a ~/Documents/HTMLS directory of 273.2MB (21590 files, 1063 sub-folders) which according to konqueror shows 1130 items - 572 files (60.8MB Total) - 558 folders, these were created by 'Save Page As' in Iceweasel 3.5.11. I am trying to copy the contents of this directory to a similar directory on a 2GB USB thumbdrive /dev/sdb1 which was partitioned and formatted as fat32 by Qparted. Problem is that the copying ceases after about 6 files transfer. I found that (as I am sure you know) the named.html files come with a matching named_files folder, and often there are what appear to be invalid characters such as '*','?',and ':' in the filenames in said named_files folders.
After exhaustive googling [I know we all say that] I found an instruction:

pax -rw -s '/[*?:]/_/gp' stuff /fat32/partition
that changes the name of the files, replacing said characters with '_', but whilst I can get pax from my repos, I really don't want to 'archive' the files - since I understand that pax was created to bridge a war between tar and cpio - because I want to be able to read the html files on an old (not connected to the Internet) WinXP tablet. So, I believe that I need to create a script, that scans all the filenames, greps and seds to replace said 'unacceptable' characters. I am assuming that Firefox on the Tablet PC will be able to open the htmls if I can get them onto the thumb drive. Are there any other known characters in filenames that M$ file systems can't handle?
There is no obvious format command when I right-click on the drive.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a flash drive that I use to sync my work- and home-computers. Rsync has occasional issues syncing between FAT32 (which I use on my flash drive b/c it's universal) and EXT3.
I decided to create an EXT3 partition on the flash drive in an attempt to alleviate the rsync woes. My problem is that when I create the partition using GParted, Ubuntu auto-mounts it with Root as the owner. I had GParted check the drive, and it found no errors to repair.
One other weird thing is that the EXT3 partition shows 84.7MB being used immediately after creating the new partition.
The FAT32 partition mounts fine, is read/write, and only shows 4KB used after the new partition scheme.
I tried doing new partitions a number of times, with EXT2, EXT3, and EXT4 just to see if that mysteriously made a difference. Each time that partition would mount w/ Root as owner.
I have 50 gigs worth of raw Digital Performer sd2 files originally saved on a fat32 external hd.
I don't have a spare fat32 laying around but I do have an ext3 disk (I run ubuntu 8.04 at home).
I have a feeling that saving these files to ext3 will render them unusable if they're ever transferred back to fat32.
I swear I've been burned by this before.
What would you do here?
Tar them first? A friggin dmg file?
formatted a 64g usb memory stick with gparted use fat32 file system and recognized full 64gig drive plug in and is on /media/usb this is what i got on my fstab UUID=24AF-1E67 /media/The-Hive defaults,nosuid,nodev,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0 i want all user access to this memory stick to write delete and execute. am I going nuts i cant make it to do that..
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 external drives that I'm using for movies and they're both formatted to fat32. The problem I'm experiencing now is that some of the high quality mkv files are not able to be moved to the drive because of fat32's limitations.
I'd like to convert to ext3 (or 4) and I wanted to check to see if I can do it without having to reformat and without loss of data.
With a 1Tb USB drive plugged in, we'll call it "TheDrive", I boot my machine and "TheDrive" is mounted automatically. The icon is on the desk-top. "TheDrive" mounts to /media/TheDrive. Everything is fine. But, I would like to automatically mount the drive in my file tree at the location /mnt/TheDrive. I would not like to have the drive automatically mounted to /media/ and appear on the desktop. I know that this requires the use of fstab; but, I do not know what to add to this file.

I have a second hard drive in my desktop and both the main dirve and second drive are 250GB. I use the second drive for backups, both manual and using back in time. The other day I noticed that the second drive was formated in FAT32. If I go to disk utility and look at the drive it says:Usage:FilesystemPartition Type:Linux (0x83)Type:FAT(32-bit version)Is this ok? I thought in Linux it should be Ext4. So far its been working fine for a while now but if I need to move my files and re format it to ext4 and move them back I would rather do it now when there is less data on the drive.

I just wanted to post this in case it helps anyone else. I have all my personal files (photos, documents, etc.) saved on a separate ext3 partition (so I don't have to worry about them on new installs, etc.). When I tried to delete files, however, I always received the message: "Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately?".
After much searching and failed fix attempts (mostly unnecessary messing with fstab), I found this post, which is now archived (or I would have replied there):ttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=759544. And frediE's solution, with a couple tiny modifications, finally solved the problem! (So huge thanks to frediE! ). irst, I found my user id, which is 1000, by going to the System > Administration > Users and Groups menu, selecting my user name (e.g. jnewm), clicking "Properties", andselecting "Advanced".
Second, I created a folder on the root of my partition called ".Trash-1000". (I may have needed to use "gksu nautilus" from a terminal to create the folder, I don't recall.)Third and last, I navigated to the root of the partition in my terminal and ran: sudo chown -R jnewm:jnewm .Trash-1000. Followed by: sudo chmod -R jnewm .Trash-1000 (I doubt this second step was necessary, but I'm listing it just in case). (confirmed unnecessary)
I've been trying to figure out how to move /home to the other partition that exists on my computer, however it's ntfs and turns out it's impossible to move my /home there. So how do convert that ntfs partition to ext3, I don't mind loosing data that's in that partition. [url] is the partition I'm talking about. So what's the best way to do it ? If you write what commands I should use please include partition names.

I am pretty much a noob when it comes to Linux. But I desperately need to do exactly what the title of this thread says.I have this ISO file which is a bootable CD image. But instead of booting off of a CD, I want to boot from a USB flash drive. I understand that I can't simply just burn it with ImgBurn or whatever, and then just drag and drop the files and folder to a USB flash drive. Because hidden files, bootloader, etc. would not be visible and not copied. I know I'm in for some special software in order to copy every single byte from that ISO image to my USB flash drive.
I did try extracting the ISO with PeaZip (7-zip based) under Windows Vista, but that didn't work out very well. It resulted in a few files and folders, totaling in at about 2 KB, while the source ISO file is actually some 50 MB. WinRAR, on the other hand, would simply just create an empty folder where to put the files (no files created/extracted), flash before my eyes and call it a day ("complete").I have learned from other posters on other forums that there is this Unilx program/command called DD. How can I use DD to accomplish this task?

I know I have to edit fstab in order to get it to mount automatically at boot, but I am having trouble with the commands.
I would like for it to mount at boot and have full read-write access from any user.
I have Fedora 11 running on my server and I am trying to use an external WD 160mb usb fat32 drive. When the drive first fires up I am able to see the root file system, but then it fails. Thanks Rondo

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an external harddrive which is fat32 (which was filled when I was on a windows system) with a lot of files on (> 200gb) which have mixed case filenames. I wanted to write a script to rename them all to lowercase however when I did I got an error saying that the filenames are the same (which I guess is true as FAT is case-insensitive). My issue is that I'm mounting this from a linux box now so it would make it a lot easier if things were lower case! I've already run a script to replace all spaces with underscores.
I know I could do this by first going through and renaming everything with a prefix and then renaming it back again (ie, rename File.Jpg to xFile.Jpg and then a second rename to strip that x off and rename lowercase to file.jpg) however I find this approach a bit messy and would prefer to do it all in one pass. Other than that, could I change the drive to ext4 without losing any files on it? The drive has a hell of a lot of stuff on there which is an archive of many years of files - I'd be absolutely gutted if I lost everything.
I loaded Ubuntu 8.4 on a data drive (second drive no OS) from a Windows XP-SP3 system. I MEANT to load it on the main XP OS drive. Bottom line I formatted a FAT-32 with Ubuntu 8.4. Can I (freeware hopefully) roll back the Ubuntu formatted drive to FAT-32 so I can recover my data?

Rather than hook the external USB drive up to my PC and manually copy it all across the network, can I just plug it in to one of my USB ports on the server and rsync it?I know how to do the rsync, I just don't know how to get the USB drive to show up when I do a df -h and how to properly remove it before unplugging it from the server. this is a live server, so I can't go playing around and possibly mess something up.

In my user manager, I don't know wich group I have to add to this simple user (it's me) so I am allowed to manage the usb key.
