Debian Hardware :: Webcam "defective" In 64 Bit If Its Actually Listed As /dev/video0?

Aug 23, 2010

Last week my uncle gave me a Logitech webcam (According to lsusb: Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Ultra Vision). It works fine in my 32 bit Debian install but in my 64 bit install, nothing works with it. Heres the issues I get:

Skype: Simply will not use it but can detect it
Cheese: Segmentation faults immediately
eViacam: Can't detect it
VLC: Detects it and can use it but almost everything is completely gray
v4lucp: Gets several errors relating to things like color, brightness, contrast, etc

I have just about everything related to v4l and v4l2 installed, including 32 bit libraries. Why is this webcam so "defective" in 64 bit if its actually listed as /dev/video0?

General :: Defective Version Of Fedora Boots - Driver Of Video Adapter

Jul 8, 2010

I install security updates - did so and ended up with a copy of fedora that goes into a loop. I suspect the prob is the driver to my video adapter. To run, I need to interrupt grub with an escape. It then shows me two choices the bad one 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686 and the old good one 2.6.31.5.- 127.fc12.i686 It defaults to the bad one, I change it to the good one and tell it ot proceed. this is inconvenient

I see that in /boot/grub/grub.conf the 2 systems are described I beleive that if I merely edit that file, taking out the refernece to the bad one, I will be ok That will leave the bad one on the disk but at least I wont have to go thru the ritual of interrupting grub. If I want to delete the bad one - after I've taken care of the grub.conf file, what do I do?

Debian Hardware :: Wired Ethernet Interface Not Listed On Toshiba Laptop

Jun 18, 2014

I need to share internet connection through wired-ethernet with another computer which does not have a wifi card.

However, no eth* interface shows up on ifconfig. Even more surprinsingly, neither lshw nor lspci shows anything related to wired ethernet controller/adapter:

Code: Select alllshw -C network
  *-network
       description: Wireless interface
       product: WiFi Link 5100
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0
       logical name: wlan2

[Code[ ....

Why isn't my laptop's wired ethernet not showing? I have a Toshiba Satellite PSAG8U-04001W.

The installation of Debian wasn't originally on this system: it was on an older laptop whose motherboard fried, so I rescued the hard drive as well as the Debian installation. However, I doubt this should have anything to do with lspci not even detecting the wired eth controller.

Debian Multimedia :: MPlayer No Longer Listed In Apps Menu After System Update

Aug 3, 2010

MPlayer was working just fine last night, but today I'm having problems which may be due to me performing a system update. I noticed that MPlayer was no longer listed in my Applications menu and I no longer had the option of opening videos with it. However, I now had Gnome MPlayer which must have been installed with the update because I never installed it. Whilst going through Synaptic, I found that the MPlayer GUI had been removed, so I re-installed it. However nothing happened when I attempted to open videos with it.

When I tried to use it through the terminal I got the error message:
mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference

I found a bug report on this very problem here [URL]. The conclusion was that the person filing the bug report was using a version of ffmpeg not found in Debian and that he'd need a version of MPlayer built with his version of ffmpeg libs. I'm assuming that this is also the case with me, however I'm not sure how to go about finding a build or simply building a version of MPlayer with whatever version of ffmpeg that I'm using. For reference, I'm using Squeeze.

It's not a huge deal but it is slightly annoying and I would like to understand why it does it and how I can stop it from flip flopping.

Not sure what you need to know in order to answer but I use 9.10, gnome 2.28.1, the video card is a Hauppauge 150 PVR something.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: /dev/video0 Not Accessible From Firefox/flash Except By Root

Dec 31, 2010

Running Lucid - was an LTS upgrade from 8.04.

I have a usb webcam (off brand). When installed, /dev/video0 is properly created and I can access the webcam through cheese as a regular user.

Code:
crw-rw----+ 1 root video 81, 0 2010-12-31 16:00 /dev/video0

The regular user is already a member of the video group, and I have checked all permissions under System->Admin->User/Groups->Advanced.

However, when as this regular user, I go to a website that tries to access my webcam via flash (ie, chatroulette or omegle), it does not detect the cam. (Firefox 3.6.13 with Flash 10)

I've already set the LD_PRELOAD as suggested elsewhere.

HOWEVER, if I LD_PRELOAD and run Firefox as root, all works fine and the flash plugin sees the webcam.

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 & OpenOffice \ Use A Frequently Came Up With An Error Message - "JRE Is Defective"?

Sep 23, 2010

I have just installed 11.3, 3.2.1.4-1.2-i586 rpm openSUSE-11.3-1.82. OpenOffice, which I use a frequently came up with an error message - "JRE is Defective"."OpenOffice.org requires a Java routine environment (JRE) to perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select another version or install another JRE and select it under Tools-Open Office.org-JRE". Clicking the "OK" on the third or fourth try brought up a spreadsheet.I checked the installed version and found it identical to OpenOffice.org latest version: 3.2.1.4. I then reinstalled and now it goes through the loading process and flashes a blank page, presumably the function selection screen without any prior warning.

I use a 32 bit PC with 512k RAM. When I loaded 11.2 I received a warning message that some applications might not work, but I went ahead and found no problems with any of the applications that I use. Installing 11.3, no warning was given.I have gone through the posts and found only one similar where it would not load on a system with Gnome.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 2 Capture Cards Result In Bad /dev/video0 And /dev/video1 Output

Oct 3, 2010

I have 3 old video capture cards which I would like to use for CCTV. Each card supports 1 camera. So I would like to have 3 cameras setup in the end and monitor them with zoneminder. When each card is plugged in on it's own, it works fine. Video comes through clearly with xawtv and zoneminder. However as soon as I plug in a 2nd card (with or without a camera connected) the output in xawtv and zoneminder goes haywire. It looks like the 2nd card takes over the first card, resulting in majority of the picture coming from the 2nd card, and some (if any) from the 1st card. When viewing either of the two cards /dev/video0 or /dev/video1 in xawtv the output is identical. I've tried this on a fresh 10.04 Ubuntu install, and on an older MythTV debian computer, the same results. Here are lspci -vv outputs with 2 combinations of cards (same fuzzy output):

[URL]

My thoughts are because the capture cards are cheap (similar to winmodems), the problem may be in the software kernel modules not allowing room for other similar capture cards to run at the same time. Can anyone suggest me in the right direction? Do I need to setup some sort of memory allocation for each card manually? Something in the BIOS? An extra option when the card modules are loaded?
