I am using a USB headset and a logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 with Ubuntu 10.04
1. When I change the sound to internal sound the webcam works in Skype but I have not sound.
2. When I change the sound to the USB headset (sound output) the webcam does not work in Skype.
Is there currently any way to record a webcam video with sound? This used to be possible back in the day before PulseAudio was installed by default (by using Mencoder, following guides such as [URL] and [URL] ) but that method doesn't work any more: /dev/dsp doesn't exist. I've also tried Cheese and that again just records a video with no audio. All the articles I can find on the topic are from the good old pre-Pulse days.
I've tried messing about with the commands a bit to use the Alsa Pulse device (defined in /etc/asound.conf) since neither mencoder or ffmpeg seem to have built in Pulse input support:

- this works, but the audio is more than a second out of sync with the video, which is a bit useless (I'm trying to record myself playing guitar), and the video is very slow (<1 fps) for the first few seconds.

In Lucid, Logitech Pro 9000 webcam worked fine until the kernel was upgraded to 2.6.32-24 recently. The usb sound was not listed in /proc/asound/cards. I had to boot from 2.6.32-23 to make it work.
UPDATE: the recent upgrade to 2.6.32-25 fixed this problem.
Video was already choppy since upgrade to 10.10, updated my xorg and now webcam is not working and I hear a ringing sound... its a lenovo webcam

I use a very cheap webcam from PCWorld PC Line 1.3 Mega Pixels with Cheese and Skype which worked on Ubuntu. The new Ubuntu Unity desktop seems most unintuitive and reading that Ubuntu may not include Gnome for the next release is my reason to make the change to Debian. I am aware Ubuntu is a Debian derivative.
I have installed Debian Squeeze and everything is working properly apart from the webcam. When I open Cheese the webcam works but very slowly although it will not capture video. When I open Cheese > Preferences, I see the Device listed as USB 2.0 Camera (/dev/video0) but greyed out. When I open Skype > Options > Video I see the same greyed out listing but no image appears in the test area.

I recently switched to Linux. I got a Camcorder connected to my machine via firewire that under Win i used as a webcam. So I want the same to work in debian, but honestly i don't know how to do it. The thing i tried was to use a loopback device via v4l2loopback, so what i did exactly is:
1. install v4l2loopback
2. modprobe v4l2loopback
3. feed it via ffmpeg Code: Select allffmpeg -f iec61883 -i auto -f v4l2 /dev/video0this so far works like a charm, i can open the stream via vlc for example if i choose open device and point it to /dev/video0
My problem now is the device detection. For example "Cheese" and the adobe flash plugin doesn't recognize any webcam.

lsusb shows the device, but I can't get any programs I've tried to actually display anything with it.
Technical details are below. Assume I'm a complete n00b (I pretty much am, when it comes to Debian).

I can play sound files with aplay, esdplay, and vlc, but I don't get any sound from iceweasel and chromium.
I installed a squeeze base system (without gnome and without the standard system utilities), then added (using --no-install-recommends) xserver-xorg-core, xdm, fluxbox, alsa-base, alsa-utils, alsa-oss, iceweasel, chromium-browser. Here I checked for sound and there was none from the browsers. I have since installed vlc, esound-clients, alsaplayer-esd, gstreamer0.10-alsa, and other software that didn't look sound-related and didn't change the symptoms.
Setting ICEWEASEL_DSP to "aoss" or "esddsp" doesn't help. Neither does "chmod -R 777 /dev/{audio,dsp,midi,mixer,snd}". snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss are loaded. Both my account and root are in group "audio". Running the browsers as root doesn't help.

In case it makes any difference, all of this happens in a qemu-kvm virtual machine with an emulated es1370 soundcard. Same with sb16 soundcard.
I would prefer not to install everything vaguely related to sound in the repositories in the hope of things fixing themselves. That's just ugly, plus I have only 200MB free space left.
I am trying to stream from a webcam to mp4 file with avconv/ffmpeg with the GRBG pixel format. I can find a lot of ffmpeg commands and other stuff on google about a webcam stream to file with ffmpeg, but none of them use GRBG pixel format and are working for me ...

I'm looking for a USB-connected webcam that works ok with linux and performs well with outdoor lighting.My goal is simple: I want to connect it to my Debian router, point it out of the window and grab frames off the cam and make it available on a web page.I've got the setup working ok with some prehistoric cam, but the image is terrible. (It's a HW issue - the cam. is junk.) So I'd like to get a better cam.I know there are cams built specifically for this usage, but it's above my price range. For me, the most expensive I'm willing to go is the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 for Business (~130 USD in a local store), or preferably cheaper. I don't want/need any sort of enclosure for outdoors, as the cam will be indoors, behind a window.
Also, I wonder how does focusing work with linux. The only webcam I've ever had had a manual focus ring. Some of the cams claim to have autofocus. I guess it's host controlled. That probably doesn't work in Linux. (?) Anyway, for my usage, autofocus would be in the way, I suppose. (I don't want it to try to focus on the sheet of glass in front of the cam. )

I've read about spca 5xx but when I go to and click on the debian package, it takes me to a "No such package" site inside debian's package.debian.orgAny idea how to resolve this? maybe there's another way to have this webcam working. View 3 Replies View RelatedI made a recent update to my Squeeze system and got this weird problem. mplayer, VLC and firefox (.....) all have sound. But when I try to run Amarok I get nothing. I looked into the Multimedia panel on the KDE4 system settings, and its not showing any devices at all. Previously it used to show HDA Intel etc., etc. Now the entries are completely blank. How do I get KDE to recognize my hardware? Shouldnt it pick things up automatically?

When plugging my headphones in via the motherboard, sound works fine. Great. I plugged in my USB Sound Card (Audiobox 44VSL) and no dice. It's set as card 1 under aplay -l, yet no sound. I know this box works on GNU/Linux because I used to use it in Xubuntu a couple years ago with no problems at all.
