Ever since the intro of Grub2, on the main Log-in screen, there is a "User" listed at the bottom of whoever is listed on the Users Log-in. Just what or who is this used for?. If it is 'clicked' on, then it asks for a password, as if 'it' is some kind of "user". But, as I don't know just what 'it' is for, therefore I also don't know 'its' password either.

The function keys don't work before log-in.. Well not for sound at least.. I guess you could say it's a bug.. unless it was intended. View 9 Replies View RelatedThe X server in Debian seems to have a "funny" habit to suddenly start blanking the screen if I don't touch the mouse or the keyboard for a while, although I've used the xset command (xset -dpms s off) in my ~/.xinitrc to tell Xorg specifically NOT to blank the screen. I know how to disable screen blanking in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but I'd rather not have the xorg.conf file at all.
So, I'd be interested to hear your suggestions about how to disable the Xorg screen blanking without using the xset command or the xorg.conf file. Is there some other file in /etc/X11/ that I could tweak to disable this highly annoying desire of Xorg to insist on blanking my screen after a bit of idle time?
I'm using Gnome as my desktop environment in Debian stable, I have previously address this issue at another post with the solution of setting xset command to disable screen blanking. However I'm still looking for a method that can automatically disable screen fade while watching videos in a browser. I don't want to permanently disable the powersaving idle method. I have both cpufreqd and laptop-mode-tools to conserve my powers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
i just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 the netbook distro. at the desktop view there is a list of about 10 buttons/menus listed on the left hand side, is there anyway to control what buttons/menus are listed and which icons are listed under each of them? having a netbook i would like to remove and unclutter the desktop view as much as possible but i dont want to remove those apps i still want to be able to open those apps if i want to even if by removing those icons and menus/buttons makes it a pain.

That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
If I try to start System-->Administration--> Login Screen on my squeeze, I get this message:

Using Debian testing and gdm3. I had set the login screen settings to automatically log me in however I want to change it back so that I have to login on startup however I cannot change the settings.In System > Administration > Login Screen the 'Click to make changes' highlights when I put the mouse pointer over it and it blinks when I click on it but that is all that happens so I cannot make any changes. Is there any way to fix this problem.

i always had problem with my ATI card and Gnome GUI i decided to install Debian without any GUI at all. After login in CLI i used those commands:"apt-get update""apt-get install alsa-base xorg kdm kde gtl-qt-engine" .I decided to manually install KDE because i had no problem with it in Open SUSE. After that I restarted my pc and got flickering login screen, I'm unable to swith to console becasue after hitting ctrl-alt-F1 I'm getting black screen. I searched google but with no luck, and if there was some solution it required you to be logged in into GUI.

I run the updates on my laptop a while ago and decided to restart it to check if everything went okay. It seems not.
The only way i can get on the desktop, is to choose the recovery mode, su to user and startx.

I'm new to the world of linux I've started using it just one week ago.I installed Debian Lenny without problem, and after 2 or 3 days managed to make my wifi and ATI card to work. Today I tried installing compiz, through the packet manager that comes with the system. It was downloaded and installed successfully, so I rebooted to see it effects (I guess) but after that, I wasn't able to get to the login screen anymore, it just gets stuck at the "gray" screen before that (I took a pic of what screen i'm talkin about). Then I accessed in console mode and removed all the compiz packages, tried dpkg-reconfigure gnome and gnome-core, then reinstalled the ati drivers, but the problem is still there.I don't want to reinstall the whole system, I don't think a simple problem like this is enough to do so, but sincerely I'm completly lost.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just installed Squeeze because Lenny didn't have the best Bluetooth support. (Just installed blueman and everything I have works without any configuring, by the way). In Lenny, gdmsetup would allow me to choose a theme for the login screen as well as change settings for logging in. With Squeeze, fully updated, I only get a couple simple options for changing automatic login (screen shot of gdmsetup).
There is a config file that I found: Code: /etc/gdm3/greeter.gconf-defaults It is a simple config file but I do not know the available themes and cannot preview them.
Is there a config file to toggle whether the screen is locked after hibernation? I looked all over preferences but if it's there, I missed it. In Ubuntu, the screen was always locked after waking up. In Squeeze, it's going directly to desktop. It's not a biggie but you never know when someone might try to access your account so I kind of liked that it would wake up locked. Maybe it's doing that because I'm the only user on the system?

Now that the computer boot up normally but when it reaches the login screen it just emit a sound in the pc's speaker,he login screen flickers and is showed another login screen again and again and again (it's automatic). I can logon using the option single-user mode in the grub options, any idead on how can I fix it?

With Ubuntu, under the System->Administration menu I get lots of options (e.g. Network Tools, Printing, Services...) to select from, but with Debian I just get Login Screen. Since I have configured my x rortation only be xrandr command by shell init script, and never had configured by GUI setting, the monitors.xml was not created. When I done with GUI, the file is created as usual.
Then I copied to

I have recently installed Debain Testing 11/01/2016 build on my laptop..
Using gdm3 as my displayManager and Gnome3..
After i put my Login ID and Password the System Hangs..
And if i use lightdm then it hangs during boot..
I searched on the internet and notice that the setup gui for changing gnome login screen is no longer available (e.g. gdmsetup does not come up with a theme that can change login screen theme.)What is the right way or where there may contain such information? I google but most of returned are prior 2.30.2, which is the version currently I am using.
