Debian Hardware :: Unknown Display With Minimum Resolution?
Aug 9, 2015
I have a nVidia GeForce GTX 760 Ti Graphics card. I have installed the proprietary driver and disabled the open source one. The problem is when I connect to two monitors via DVI and VGA, the VGA one appears to be 'unknown' and is using incorrect resolution of 640x480. How can I correct its resolution?
The xrandr output

I have never used Linux always windows so heres the problem the display only has 2 settings 640x480 and a smaller one and it say unknown monitor. I installed the drivers in hardware driver in systems I'm running Ubuntu v 9.10 if that matters and the video card is a Nvida mx440.
I have done a scratch install of Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) successfully today. I am facing problem while adjusting my monitor resolution.
My motherboard is pretty old, Kobian 845GLNDSMx. When I tried to adjust the resolution from Preferences -> Monitors, the resolution is shown as 800x600 (4:3), Refresh Rate - 0Hz and Rotaion as normal. "Monitor Unknown" is highlighted on the window. Moreover, "Detect Monitors" doesn't work.
I am new to Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu 8.04 and it detected my Acer monitor AL1716 correctly and it works fine. However when I installed Ubuntu 11.04 it shows the monitor as " Unknown Monitor" and the maximum resolution is 1024x768 and I cannot set the native resolution which is much higher. My motherboard has Intel 845G chipset and built in graphics. I tried Ubuntu Software Center, but couldnot solve the problem.
Recently when I rebooted the display resolution went to 800x600, where as before it was 1024x768. For some reason 1024x768 is no longer listed in (GNOME) System->Preferences->Moniters. Even after reinstalling Debian from scratch it's not there anymore. What can I do to fix this? System->Preferences->Moniters says Moniter: Unknown and stays that way even if I click Detect moniters.
# xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600 default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
How can I know the display resolution (e.g. 1280x1024 px) without starting X?I mean: let us suppose that /etc/X11 was renamed to /etc/x11. After reboot Debian starts in text mode only.
I've just completed my first pc build, and installed Ubuntu 8.2. My build was focussed around a legacy Apple Cinema 30" display, which has 2560x1600 @ 60fps resolution. The motherboard - Gigabyte H97N-Wifi - supports that display, although the display drivers are supplied by Intel, and are therefore nonfree. On startup, my display resolution defaults to 1200x800. This is what /var/log/Xorg.0.log says about it:

I bumped into a webpage which stated that xrandr does not work with proprietary drivers, and if that's true, I can't get it to change resolution on my screen.
I've decided to try Debian Lenny, after i succefully installed it without any problems there appears to be a problem - after loading the services and etc, my monitor turns off with a floating message saying it cannot display the current resolution, and that i should set it to 1280x1024@60Hz.
I have a brand new computer with an ATI Radeon HD5850 video card I have a LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1080. I installed Debian Testing 2.6.32-5-amd64
Because I have several machine, I use a KVM (switch keyboard) in the middle. This KVM is quite old but still work correctly only problem is that it don't forward the EDID information. Until now it wasn't a problem, and by specifying the correct parameters of the monitor in /etc/X11/xorg.conf , I always succeed to reach the 1920x1080 resolution
In installed the proprietary drivers from ATI Catalyst 10.6 (last version)
since I have 2 problems : first in the console I used framebuffer in 1280x1024x32. Before installation of the ATI drivers, it was ok, now the screen is completely black !! on every tty (I didn't investigate much on this trouble yet)
Second problem: I can't reach the native resolution of my monitor ! No matter what I'm doing, the best the driver propose is 1600x1200 !!
I made a lot of test and modification in xorg.conf but without success, it always goes back to this resolution and never propose something higher For information, if I connect the monitor directly to the video card (removing the KVM), everything is OK and the resolution is automatically set to 1920x1080
I installed the proprietary bumblebee-nvidia (version 3.2.1) as per the instructions in URL...The problem is that when I connect a monitor to the laptop, the image is duplicated with only part of the screen showing on the second monitor. The monitor itself is not detected in the display settings or arandr / xrandr, so I can't change the resolution or set dual display, etc. Here is the output of xrandr:
Code: Select all$ xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 1920 x 1080, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 1920 x 1080 default connected 1920x1080+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1920x1080 0.0*
my TV resolution is 1366x786, I've set it with xrandr [URL] , but any mode I pick there are two black strips on the sides of my TV display. I'm using debian jessie 8.1 and xfce.
After spending the last couple of days running different distros on a old Compaq armada 7800 I've settled on Debian, as it's recognised most of the hardware with out to much tinkering
Only problem i have is the display resolution i need to run at 1024 x 768 but the max i can get is 800x600 I believe the display adapter is a S3 Virge/MX 2D/3D Dual Display Accelerator
Is there a driver/package I can download to correct this issue
I can use the console as long as some one give me Janet and John instructions
I'm trying to get a framebuffer console with acceptable scrolling speed on Dell XPS M1530. It has GeForce 8600M GT card with maximum resolution supported by bios 1920x1200
I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.
I have an acer aspire one netbook and in display properties it says the monitor is unknown. The trouble is that the screen is widescreen (16:9) but it has it as (4:3)so the screen is sort of stretched. Is the a terminal command as another way round this or how can i get the screen recognised?
If i want to install minimum gnome on debian with netinstaller, what would be the command? Is it correct? aptitude install gnome-core If i do aptitude install gnome-core,what packages would be installed on system?
What is the minimum CPU or processor required for a Debian stable installation with no GUI, desktop environment, or window manager? I can find specs for all minimum hardware capabilities except for the processor on a system with no desktop GUI. (Debian Stable GNU/Linux Installation Guide 3.4 Meeting Minimum Hardware Requirements) section 2.1.2: CPU, Main Boards, and Video Support and Linux Hardware Compatibility Section 4.1—Intel make it seem like any i386 CPU is good enough.
I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:
1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:
[code]....
2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.
3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.
I installed the nvidia proprietary drivers with click-install and everything perfect, I have desktop effects working but the problem is that when you open the config. screen settings to make sure everything was really good, I get to screen unknown April.
The maximum resolution is the correct 1440 * 900 for 19 "but the refresh rate by not recognizing the monitor down to 50hz me and gives me the option to 60hz as it was before installing the nvidia drivers.
I use an old notebook 15' LCD, (4:3) with the ridiculous (for fly eyes) resolution of 1400x1050. My eyes are not young anymore. On Ubuntu I could select the resolution of 1152x864 which is fine (1024x768 is too big and really makes me look like a grand-daddy...). How can I set 1152x864 on Fedora 13, if it is possible and how? Recent distribution do not rely on a xorg.conf file anymore. I use an older 9000 Mobility Radeon, and there are no proprietary drivers anymore, but the open source one. I gave it a try. Install the package to create an Xorg default and edited my resolution
I purchased a lenovo G550 recently and immediately dumped the Windows OS for Ubuntu 9.10. The display is currently defaulting to 1366x768. From reading it looks as though this display can support both 16:9 and 16:10 aspects. I have ran through the xrandr commands attempting to set my resolution to something...anything bigger than 1366x7768 (I'm used to 1600x1200 from my old T61, so this is painfully small). As a test I am trying to get 1920 1200, from my xrandr results it looks like it should be within the lcd's range. xrandr commands failed on me as I have seen on a couple other intel based resolution problems. I don't fully understand the root of the problem and have not had any luck in my searches. So I have also attempted to manually create the xorg.conf file, not luck yet.
I'm running 10.04 desktop on a Dell PowerEdge T710 connected to a Dell 22" LCD (E2210). The T710 uses a Matrox G200eW chipset. For some reason, I can't set the display resolution to the native res of my monitor (1680x1050). For what it's worth, here are the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
X.Org X Server 1.7.6 Release Date: 2010-03-17 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.24-27-server x86_64 Ubuntu Current Operating System: Linux map-renderer-1 2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 19:31:57 UTC 2010 x86_64 Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic root=UUID=95546d53-2465-4192-84e4-ed7d2a6a8491 ro quiet splash [Code].....
I have a Dell U2311H monitor which has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080. My graphics card is an ATI 6870.
Last night I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside my Windows installation, and when booting into Ubuntu, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.
How can I resolve this to get Ubuntu to display at the native resolution?
I changed my display resolution to 832x624 from a higher resolution. Now all my resolution higher than 832x624 have disappeared and I cannot set a higher resolution.Does anyone know how I can get my higher display resolutions back.
Ive just installed Fedora 12, max resolution option is 800*600 can someone advise how i can adjust or improve the resolution to at least 1200*700?Hardware: HP D330m, 2.8GHZ, 700MB RAM, VGA is a Intel Extreme Graphics Display.
