my TV resolution is 1366x786, I've set it with xrandr [URL] , but any mode I pick there are two black strips on the sides of my TV display. I'm using debian jessie 8.1 and xfce.
View 4 RepliesI installed 9.10 on a computer I'm working on, and right away the graphics went out. It won't display the proper resolution without shoving the display significantly to the left.
After MUCH Googling, I found that this can be fixed by a driver called i915. After much MORE Googling, I found [URL], which as you can imagine filled me with relief.
And THEN I try to follow the instructions and discover to my pure horror that GRUB has been gutted and made unusable in 9.10. GRUB2 just simply does not seem to have an option to insert the i915 driver into my boot command.
should I just forget this unstable release and burn a 9.04 disk instead?
I am having video issue with ubuntu 9.10 and centos 5.4 cannot get resolution higher than 800x600 on Viewsonic vg930m monitor...The first time I installed ubuntu 9.10 worked great, since then no better than 800x600 on both linux distros. Any ideas it is very annoying, like using web browser on a small tablet pc....This monitor works great with opensolaris, though.
Using both distros in virtualbox right now but even if not virtualized install on hard drive I cannot get higher than 800x600...Driving me nuts.
I intend to switch to Debian form PCLinuxOS. I am not an experienced Linux user. But I intend to switch all my machines to Linux. I have used Antix as well on an older machine. I am a bit familiar with the basic Linux CLI commands.
I intend to switch to Debian as I think the support (Forums and probably mailinglist) are more active then PCLoS and Antix. Sadly enough though the live cd gives a problem which no distro gave on the same machine. And I really do not know what to do about it.

I have a LMDE (Mint Linux Edition based on testing, now Wheezy) i386 that I just did a dist-upgrade on and now it isn't properly detecting my monitor resolution. I have two 1680x1050 monitors, one attached to the DVI and another to a VGA video switch. When I rebooted to the new 2.6.38-2-686 kernel both monitors were giving me 1024x768. I futzed around for a while and could then get the the DVI monitor to correctly identify the proper resolution, but the VGA monitor resolutely refused to see more than 1024x768.

Should I file a bug report, and if so, with whom? I have to say, the Debian bug report process is not too newbie (or even not-so-newbie) friendly, but I'd like to help if it doesn't require me to hand-configure a MUA.
Also, I suppose I shouldn't mention it in a single post, but my mouse is behaving rather unpredictably now (click speed, selecting), and trying to reboot dismounts the file system and then starts up again giving me my display manager (in my case KDM), without restarting the system (both from "sudo reboot" and trying to restart with KDM or the Gnome widget). If I really want to restart the system I have to halt it first and hit the power button.
I recently switched from a DVI cable to a HDMI cable (from the motherboard to the monitor) on my desktop. Everything was working flawlessly with the DVI cable, but when i switched to the HDMI cable the resolution became altered in a strange way. According to both the 'Monitor Preferences' and 'NVIDIA X Server Settings' my resolution is 1920x1080. Both the mouse and some icons looks to be in that resolution. However, the gnome panels, the rest of the icons, toolbars, etc. are huge and in a low resolution. While using Iceweasel, the top gnome panel and the Iceweasel toolbars take up half my screen! I can't find a way to alter the size of these since my resolution is set to maximum. I thought it might be a problem with gnome, so I tried Fluxbox, but the same problems were there. Have anybody else come across this, or perhaps know of a solution?

Recently when I rebooted the display resolution went to 800x600, where as before it was 1024x768. For some reason 1024x768 is no longer listed in (GNOME) System->Preferences->Moniters. Even after reinstalling Debian from scratch it's not there anymore. What can I do to fix this? System->Preferences->Moniters says Moniter: Unknown and stays that way even if I click Detect moniters.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just completed my first pc build, and installed Ubuntu 8.2. My build was focussed around a legacy Apple Cinema 30" display, which has 2560x1600 @ 60fps resolution. The motherboard - Gigabyte H97N-Wifi - supports that display, although the display drivers are supplied by Intel, and are therefore nonfree. On startup, my display resolution defaults to 1200x800. This is what /var/log/Xorg.0.log says about it:

I bumped into a webpage which stated that xrandr does not work with proprietary drivers, and if that's true, I can't get it to change resolution on my screen.
I've decided to try Debian Lenny, after i succefully installed it without any problems there appears to be a problem - after loading the services and etc, my monitor turns off with a floating message saying it cannot display the current resolution, and that i should set it to 1280x1024@60Hz.

Because I have several machine, I use a KVM (switch keyboard) in the middle. This KVM is quite old but still work correctly only problem is that it don't forward the EDID information. Until now it wasn't a problem, and by specifying the correct parameters of the monitor in /etc/X11/xorg.conf , I always succeed to reach the 1920x1080 resolution
In installed the proprietary drivers from ATI Catalyst 10.6 (last version)
since I have 2 problems :
first in the console I used framebuffer in 1280x1024x32. Before installation of the ATI drivers, it was ok, now the screen is completely black !! on every tty (I didn't investigate much on this trouble yet)
Second problem:
I can't reach the native resolution of my monitor ! No matter what I'm doing, the best the driver propose is 1600x1200 !!
I made a lot of test and modification in xorg.conf but without success, it always goes back to this resolution and never propose something higher For information, if I connect the monitor directly to the video card (removing the KVM), everything is OK and the resolution is automatically set to 1920x1080

I installed the proprietary bumblebee-nvidia (version 3.2.1) as per the instructions in URL...The problem is that when I connect a monitor to the laptop, the image is duplicated with only part of the screen showing on the second monitor. The monitor itself is not detected in the display settings or arandr / xrandr, so I can't change the resolution or set dual display, etc. Here is the output of xrandr:

I have a nVidia GeForce GTX 760 Ti Graphics card. I have installed the proprietary driver and disabled the open source one. The problem is when I connect to two monitors via DVI and VGA, the VGA one appears to be 'unknown' and is using incorrect resolution of 640x480. How can I correct its resolution?

It seems that whenever I boot my laptop (hp probook 6450b) without a monitor attached, then boot with a monitor later attached, the configuration gets all messed up.
Currently, if I boot with the monitor attached, right after the blue loading screen (at the login prompt) i get two black monitors and a mouse, with no login screen. Unplugging the monitor shows the login screen on the laptop.
If i boot without the monitor attached, log in, then plug it in, i see the following from xrandr:

I did notice that when I shutdown, it hangs on "Running guests on default URI", and i get a stack trace. It will keep dumping stack traces, and i have to hold down the power button to force it off.
My machine is dated, that's for sure, but it's never given me problems. Ubuntu has worked flawless until the 10.04 update. Now I'm not getting my proper screen resolution of 1024.768, and Ubuntu won't recognise my screen. Also, when I try to load up my nvidia drivers on the Hardware Drivers app, and reboot the computer, when GDM loads I get an error that the nvidia module fails to load, and there is no such driver.

They are very stripped down computers with minimal configuration : 1Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, 1 SD Card (and usual USB/VGA ports).
Everything runs fine out of the box with Debian 7.2

I have installed Lucid on a PC with integrated graphics (GeForce 8100 on a Biostar GF8100 M2+ TE). On a fresh install the resolution is 1024x768, but that's no surprise as the Nvidea drivers are not installed. Immediately I get a notification of HW drivers available. I install the latest (recommended) ones (195.36.15). Reboot, and I can see other resolutions available:
1152x864
1360x768
I'm using a 19" Dell LCD (4:3 ratio) which supports up to 1280x1024. I can actually set the 1360x768 but, obviously, the screen looks ... squashed in the X axis. I noticed that the type of display is not identified (Nvidia panel says "CRT-0"), so I tried to manually add the 1280x1024 resolution. Below you can find the xorg.conf and the Xorg.0.log. It seems to me that the mode 1280x1024 is considered not valid for some reasons. The string for Modeline in the xorg.conf was determined using "cvt".

This has been happening with the majority of screens I try to plug into, but the proprietary nvidia driver never detects the correct resolutions -__- the open-source driver works perfectly with a little xrandr magic, but I'd like to have some 3D acceleration going on. I'm using the desktop version of Nvidia ION and ubuntu 10.10, with the current nvidia driver (from the repositories). The native resolution is 1440x900 @60 Hz. Any thoughts on this? Again, the nouveau driver is great but I'd like to have VDPAU and the like working. code...

My monitor is the hp pavilion f1703. The 9.10 only offers 2 resolutions 800 x 600 (4:3) and 640 x 480 (4:3)The native screen resolution is 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz which is obviously not offered. The problem is that when I select System -> Preferences -> Monitors, the monitor is shown as unknown and it only allows me to set 1280x1024 (shows 0Hz as display refresh rate) which is way too high for my brother. I was wondering if there's a way to select the proper monitor from a list so all display resolutions are shown and I can select a lower one for him.
I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

Why are there less resolutions available in Ubuntu? Is there a way that I can override this? Lastly, Win 7 will remember to reconfigure my resolution when my TV is connected and then switch it back to the monitor's native resolution when disconnected. Is this possible in Linux? This works, but the text is tiny. There are too many rows and columns of characters (or equivalently, the font is too small). When I try changing the TV resolution to a smaller size, it just cuts out the rest of the text. So from the command line, how do I make the text bigger?

But when try to display ubuntu on my tv it says mode not supported check source resolution. The cable is dvi to hdmi btw. ive tried a couple of diff resolutions on ubuntu but none of them works. my graphics card is an older radeon x550. ubuntu does work on a standard monitor though.
