I'm posting from my brand new out of the box HP Pavilion dv6, great machine, but I'm having some hardware issues. My touchscreen isn't working. As well, my touchpad mouse isn't functioning correctly. The left/right click buttons are treated as part of the touch pad, which makes clicking things very difficult. As well, it doesn't appear to have a right click function at all

I've just bought a new notebook and wanted to install Debian Wheezy. I bought an ASUS N550JV and since I installed Debian I've had a really bad time with Windows, UEFI boot loaders, GPT discs, touchscreens, nvidia, bumblebee, bluetooth and so on. After a few days, I've been able to boot Windows and Debian, however I'm quite unhappy with how Debian is handling the hardware.
Right now, my worst concern is the touchscreen. I don't really care whether it works or not but it is really messing with the OS. I installed Debian stable which comes with the 3.2.57 kernel. The touchscreen didn't work at all and I didn't really care until I run dmesg. Each 2 seconds I get spammed with the following text added to the dmesg output:
Code: Select all[Â Â 31.901696] xhci_queue_intr_tx: 74 callbacks suppressed

I've got a problem with touchscreen (NNK Switches 5.7" model: FT-CU04B). It is not supported under Linux, but I managed to get it working with usbtouchscreen module, after some modifications of course. It gets recognized by system now, it is possible to calibrate it correctly through xinput_calibrator but it isn't possible to "left click with it". I know that it's weird so I want to make myself clear - touchscreen recognizes touch - when touching button for example, it reacts with "going down" but when I'm releasing button, it "goes up" again, without action. I've tried mapping left mouse button with xinput set-button map 1 0 0 0 0 0, but without success, buttons remain "unclickable".

recently i got a very old laptop fujitsu fmv-680mc4 with celeron 800Mhz cpu and 256m ram.so i throwed away the hell-slow xubuntu 10.04 and put debian lenny on that machine.
everything worked smoothly(even the gnome environment!but why xubuntu with xfce always suck my cpu to its fullest?),only touchscreen did not.I've also got a copy of windows xp running on it,and touchscreen worked fine there. It's really hard to find a clue about the hardware specification(outdated, maybe deleted on their official website),I even don't know the model of the touchscreen. The only information i know is that it has a PS/2 interface and comes with an identifier 'PNP0F13' (as M$ windows hardware manager says). i remember stock 2.6 kernel do support some lifebook touchscreens, with modules compiled into kernel. But when i run cat /dev/psaux and touch on screen nothing happened(when i move the trackpad it did output some binary codes),and i move on "cat" the whole /dev/input folder but no luck still. Then i tried to modprobe some touchscreen modules in,but failed, nothing comes out from dmesg.
the question is: is there a way to get it to work(seeing binary code flow out of my console is also considered as "working")?does it need some "initialize magic code" to be brought into ready state?

I am hoping to be able to get an old serial-touchscreen to work with a usb/serial adapter. I had this touchscreen working some years ago on different hardware. I would like to hook it to the machine I am setting up as a multimedia host with mythtv among other things.
Following the instructions I left behind when I got this to work way back when does not work. See [URL] ....
This info is a work around to get the xserver to see the touchscreen. [URL] ....
I do know that the touchscreen works as I am able to get garbage on the screen as in the first part of my howto. But I have not had any success getting xorg to see it. I wish I had posted a copy of the xorg.conf at the time, but......
There is an issue with the current xserver in testing that I am hoping the next update (in unstable) will fix when it gets pushed to testing. That is that Code: Select all# X -configure fails with a segfault. So I am not able to generate the xorg.conf needed to get it to work. I was going to post a bugreport, that is when I found out there is an update in unstable, so I am waiting for it to get pushed at the moment.
Anyway I am hoping that I can link /dev/ttyUSB0 to /dev/tty0 and get it to work. I would like some kind of guess as to my chances of success before I go to all the work of getting the monitor hooked to the host.

I'm trying to install smlnj 110.73 on a 64 bit lucid, and during installation, it complains of no 32-bit support.
Having zero knowledge of how 32-bit emulation is triggered in Ubuntu, all the leads I have to go on is this piece of shell script used by the installer to determine the architecture and emulation:
Code:
#
# on 64-bit linux systems, we need to check to see if the 32-bit emulation
# support is installed
#
if [ x"$ARCH" = "xx86" -a x"$OPSYS" = "xlinux" ] ; then

Dowloaded 10.04 beta 2 64 bit iso and was trying to install it into a VM. Upon boot however is comes up with something like "cant install it on your 32bit machine".
I'm fairly sure my laptop has a 64 bit architecture (for example, i have the "lm" flag when i cat the /proc/cpuinfo), so is there a way to convince VB that I have a 64 bit machine? unless there is a better way to find out if my CPU is indeed NOT 64 bit?

I currently know next to nothing about networks in Linux (yes I am working on that). I have just brought a Asus n13 wireless adapter after failing to get my laptop wireless working. I am using the 2.6.32-5 Debian squeeze kernel. The device connected once after I did the following:
apt-get update
modprobe rt2870sta
iwconfig
ifconfig wlan0 up
The device connected to wifi and was working fine. I then shutdown and rebooted to see if it would automatically connect on start up and now, although nothing seems to have changed and even after I repeated the steps above it did not connect. The network manager applet as well as listing the asus adapter(as ralink 802.11 WLAN) lists a Texas instruments PCI1410 pc card cardbus controller which i didn't before.
This is the output of iwconfig:

I just installed a fresh install of firmware-8.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso. During installation the wireless setup utility located my wifi-network and upon entering my WPA password it said it was connected. It didn't work however so I plugged in my ethernet cable and continued the install process hoping it would magically start working after that. No luck.
I went from an Arch Linux install with working wifi, and I dual-boot my box with Windows 7 with working wifi, so I know it's not the card or the distance from the router.

I have a GRUB2 USB multiboot setup. Plus I have a multiboot setup on my computer with Ubuntu 9.10, PCLinuxOS, Windows XP, and Fedora 13. The issue I'm having is different but the same. On my USB multiboot, Fedora will hang up on certain devices. Things such as touchpad, bluetooth, etc. On my PC it hangs up on first the bluetooth, then I unplug, then the USB hub, then the mouse and finally the external hard drive. It detects the devices but it freezes on detection. I did get this error before the device detection began:
Quote:
dracut; dracut-005-3.fc13
dracut: FATAL: Don't know how to handle 'root=(0,4)'
dracut: Refusing to continue
dracut: FATAL: Don't know how to handle 'root=(0,4)'
dracut: Refusing to continue
this is on the PC and the problem with the USB is that it will hang up when detecting devices.

Is there an application that allows one to 'export' a drive or virtual disk image to firewire so that the machine at the other end sees the computer as a regular firewire drive? Apple computers can do that via their target disk mode (hold down t on boot), but I am searching for an application that would work under Windows or Linux. The goal is to boot an older Apple iBook, which can not boot from USB, via this emulated firewire drive.

I'm trying to get Apple II emulation up and running with xmess. I've been searching for info on how to do this and it seems like it should be fairly simple. I've downloaded the apple2.zip bios file and placed it in /usr/share/games/xmess/bios
If I run the following command:
Code:
I get this output
Code:
It seems that then I should be able to simply issue the following command and be off and running:
Code:
The emulator opens, I get a warning telling me to type OK and then get to a display that basically says this:
Typing anything gets me to a command line, but there doesn't seem to be anything there (not surprising based on the "---" on the previous screen). Typing "CATALOG" shows nothing.
Does anyone know how to use this emulator or has run into the same problem. I think that I'm doing things correctly, but it just doesn't seem to be recognizing the dsk file.

I recently bought a used Asus eee 1001PX. It came installed with some spyware called windows which I replaced with jessie. Everything works great but one thing. When I plug in headphones I get no sound in the headphones. If I have some audio running and plug them in while it's playing it doesn't cut the audio from the built in speakers off like it should do. If I start and look at Output Devices in pauvcontrol it seems like it at least recognizes that I have headphones inserted.
I didn't have a chance to test if the physical audio jack was broken while it had Windows running on it but assuming that it's not physically broken, what might be wrong? I know very little about audio, alsa, pulse and that kind of stuff so I hardly know even where to start.

At this time only one program at a time can access a serial port. I have found a way to emulate this in Windows so that I can have both running, now I'm trying to do the same in Ubuntu. Is it possible? If yes, How? The GPS receiver is connected via a USB port.
