So I have this laptop with a busted battery, I'm trying to get it into some kind of headless server, media topbox hybrid.
First thing I want to do is being able to leave it shut (powered on) in the corner without having to interact with it directly.
I've setup ssh and vnc so to login remotely and do task, transfer files and etc.
However there is a little issue with the laptop lid down upon turning it on, it immediately goes into suspend when getting to the display manager, which is 'lightdm'.
I suppose this is the default setting for Xorg and as such my custom configs for KDE only kick in after I login.
Question is: I never seen configuration for default power management stuff being done in Xorg, is there some way to disable automatic suspension on lid down?
Another question is: After the KDE kicks in does it always replace power options? I have setup a xorg.conf file specifying dpms options but these don't seem to remain.

Where is now, in new Debian systems, the internal text file where the
adequate medium (live systems recognize a medium /dev/sdb1 if I connect my phone tablet)
has to be present if used?
Is a special procedure to be use to mount, open, read, close and unmount them properly?

System is a Dell E7440, with Jessie, I recently upgraded to kernel 4.2.5 due to issues with wireless that are supposed to be fixed. (The same issue exists with jessie stock kernel 3.16 and BPO tough)
When I close the lid it often does not work and I get this in dmesg
Code: Select all[ 567.104335] pci_bus 0000:01: Allocating resources
[ 567.104349] pci_bus 0000:02: Allocating resources
[ 567.104415] pci_bus 0000:03: Allocating resources
[ 567.104428] i915 0000:00:02.0: BAR 6: [??? 0x00000000 flags 0x2] has bogus alignment
[ 567.105515] i915 0000:00:02.0: BAR 6: [??? 0x00000000 flags 0x2] has bogus alignment
[ 567.105540] i915 0000:00:02.0: BAR 6: [??? 0x00000000 flags 0x2] has bogus alignment
[ 567.105585] i915 0000:00:02.0: BAR 6: [??? 0x00000000 flags 0x2] has bogus alignment
[Code] ....
I suppose the i915 stuff is something I can ignore, However
Code: Select all[ 570.768020] acpi device:40: Cannot transition to power state D3hot for parent in (unknown)
seems to be the issue.. I don't even know what device:40 is.
in ls -l it shows as
Code: Select all lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Nov 2 12:28 device:40 -> ../../../devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0A08:00/INT33C6:00/device:40
and
Code: Select all# cat /sys/bus/acpi/devices/device:40/path
\_SB_.PCI0.SDHC.WI01
The awkward thing is tough, software suspend by running "systemctl suspend" works perfectly and always.
Code: Select all [ 872.054627] PM: Syncing filesystems ... done.
[ 872.091506] PM: Preparing system for sleep (mem)
[ 872.092045] Freezing user space processes ... (elapsed 0.001 seconds) done.
[ 872.093377] Freezing remaining freezable tasks ... (elapsed 0.001 seconds) done.
[ 872.094563] PM: Suspending system (mem)
[ 872.094595] Suspending console(s) (use no_console_suspend to debug)
[Code] ....
So despite the mysterious issue with acpi device 40, how is real lid close different from "systemctl suspend"? And can I simply workaround the issue by making such a suspend when the lid closes?

I'm using xfce, and the power manager settings, to only lock the screen when close, are not honored. The laptop suspends, no matter what, when closed. Is there a way to forcibily only allow xfce power manager to handle the close lid behavior?

I don't know if these are related, but I have had occasional lockups, where no input has any effect and then it shuts down, and am usually unable to resume from suspend on closing the lid.
Here are the specifics. Thinkpad x120e, AMD e-350, ATI radion 6310 graphics, Intel 320 series SSD 80 GB, no bluetooth.
The ethernet and wireless cards, as given in lspci, are

My plex media server suddenly stopped working after years of no hassle use. This is the output of cat /proc/version = Linux version 3.2.0-4-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Debian 4.6.3-14) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.2.65-1+deb7u2
My problem is similar to this forum thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=121945 where I can get it to start by running Code: Select all/usr/sbin/start_pms & but it's not my normal server configuration. I added a couple files to it and it seems to work except it doesn't start when I reboot. I have to run that command again. This is the init script I've been running for years...
Code: Select all----
#!/bin/sh
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: plexmediaserver
# Required-Start: $remote_fs $syslog $networking
# Required-Stop:
[code]....
My Debian skills are lacking to know how to proceed with troubleshooting what could have happened. Everything else seems fine, I just can't seem to get this application to run at startup or get back my old configuration...

Gnome sessions started hanging during login on a debian lenny box, and I can only think it's related to a recent package update as it was working fine before the last set. It affects all user accounts and hangs before the applications menu or any icons appear on the panels, but after after the top /bottom panels and the desktop background appears.

I installed jessie from a beta/rc shortly before release on my MacBook Pro 13 Retina and have kept it up to-date with apt-get dist-upgrade. Rcently gdm3/gnome-session have stopped working together. When I log in the screen goes black for a couple of seconds then goes back to the login screen. This happens with "System Default", "GNOME Classic" and "GNOME", but not with "GNOME on Wayland". However, Wayland seems to have some other issues. I haven't tried an alternative dm yet, eg lightdm, but the GNOME desktop does work when started with startx.
I've just used journalctl to get logs of what gdm3 and gnome-session were doing at the time. After booting I waited until the clock reached the next minute (19:55) so I'd know at which point in the logs I'd hit enter on my password. I'll post the gdm log separately in two chunks because the forum server doesn't seem to like text attachments and they're too long for one post.
Log from gnome-session:

I did a clean install of 11.04 and I have experienced that my separate X-screen does not have the program-name bar with the minimize, close-buttons etc. It's my third monitor is a separate X and it does not really work since I cant close programs, maximize windows or move them around. I cant even write anything on it. The first two monitors work great as one X-screen, just as they did in 10.10. Ubuntu Classic, no Unity. Two monitors (one X) on a ATI HD6970 One monitor (the X-screen that doesn't work properly) on a ATI HD4870

I have an NFS on my desktop, and mount it from my laptop: 192.168.1.22:/mnt/max/share /mnt/reddevil_nfs nfs rsize=8192,wsize=9182,timeo=9 Occasionally, access to the files suddenly "freezes". For example, if I try to run "ls /mnt" from the client, nothing will be printed, Ctrl-c does nothing, and the prompt never reappears; or, if I try to view that directory from thunar, thunar will freeze, or if I am playing a video from the share in mplayer, mplayer will freeze. I tried to unmount it:
umount -f /mnt/reddevil_nfs
umount2: Device or resource busy
umount.nfs: /mnt/reddevil_nfs: device is busy

I have to restart X in low graphics mode to get it to work. i can't tell the difference, but as an avid writer, I often feel the need to get up and think about whatever I have open in oowriter.

I'm currently building a ubuntu distro and would like to run a script on GNOME startup. I've read about doing it through the session manager but I have to do it through chroot so I'll need to set it up as a terminal command. Is there a way to add an item to the Session Manager from terminal or, even better, a directory where I can put the script so it will run on start?

I am using screen to start a LONG running script on my server over an ssh connection. This works fine. I can see that the script is continuing to run after I disconnect from the screen session using Ctrl-A d. When the script is complete I can reconnect to the screen session and manually terminate it.
I would like to be able to terminate the screen session at the end of the script. I tried issuing an exit command at the end of the script. That did NOT work. Any ideas?

I've just installed lenny from dvd, and am just settling in. I'm curious about virtual machines. so I've installed xen. With xen comes qemu by default. Now the setup I've recently become familiar with is Suse-11 which is quite slick. In Suse, Yast provides a distribution prepared virtual management section for xen, including an installer. Debian's setup is similar but not a clone. I want to try out the installer. Aside from the differences, debian has a screaming deficit. On booting dom0 in Lenny, if fails to get into gnome, badly. I can tell what's probably wrong, but I need to fix it. Now I'm also a gentoo fan and very practised at posting queries, so here goes.
Debian's config for X is somewhat unhelpful. The xorg.conf just states Configured device and configured monitor for its components. If it expanded on just what the settings were it would help. What I have is a frambuffer driver not loadinf or being implemented.

I've installed Debian on a Sun Ultra 450 Enterprise system using the net install version, so I know that my network is working correctly. However, now that Debian is installed and I bring up Gnome, I have no network access. I've set eth0 to DHCP, and have pointed it to my DNS server, but it never gets any information from the DNS server.
I've looked through /etc/network/interfaces, which looks like this:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface allow-hotplug eth0
#NetworkManager#iface eth0 inet dhcp
/etc/resolv.conf contains:
nameserver 192.168.0.1
which is correct.
I've run
/etc/init.d/networking stop
/etc/init.d/networking start
So far, nothing works. Why would the Debian network install disk work, but not be smart enough to set my network correctly from the start once I'm actually running Linux? Also, how do I get the network running in Gnome?

If I run pm-utils from a terminal pm-sleep and pm-hibernate work fine both. So I guess all I need is to change the commands which are run by clicking on the suspend or hibernate button, but how to change what is behind the GUI.

I (and those who kindly helped) went through hell building the driver for mi wireless, but apparently that's over now. The reason I know that is that when I go to System-->Administration-->Network, I can see the interfaces that are detected: Wired Connection, which I enabled by setting the automatic dhcp option, and Wireless Connection, which is not activated. When I double click in Wireless Connection, a window opens with an unchecked box saying "Enable this connection" so I check the box and the previously greyed options become subject for editing. I have two setting I can configure: Wireless Setting, which have Network Name, password type and Network password Connection Settings, which has Configuration, IP Adress, Subnet mask and Gateaway Adress.
Since I'm hopping to get wireless working to a point which i can automatically connect to wireless whose passwords I know or that are open (like un public spaces) I think the best option to choose in Connection Settings-->Configuration is Automatic Configuration (DHCP). When I choose that, all other options under Connections Settings become grayed.
In Wireless Settings-->Password type, the default choice was WPA Personal. Network Name and network password are blank. The problem is that, as it is, the "OK" button of the Network window is grayed out, so the only option is to Cancel, in which case the Wireless Network remains dissabled. I noticed that if I write something (anything) in the field of Network Name (ESSID) the OK button can be selected, but I don't know what should I write in that space. How do I know which name is appropiate? Does it matter? Can I choose whatever name I want?
