Debian :: Squeeze - Freeze Or Kerneloops At Random Time After Suspend

Jun 3, 2010

I'll start at the beginning. The problem i am about to describe occured in ubuntu 9.10 for the first time (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/480850) and is ironically partly responsible for my switching to debian. which i don't regret, but it seems i can't run from the bug any longer because now it's in squeeze, so i want to fix it or make a proper bug report:

Steps to Reproduce:
1: Suspend Laptop to RAM
2: Resume from Suspend
3: Wait and see, preferably monitoring top:
At some random time, ranging from immediately (black screen after resume) to several hours later, the system will become unresponsive. Switching to tty1 or Alt+Print+K does not work, Alt+Print+REISUB does work. Each freeze is anticipated by a random process (this time it was mandb, was installing something) hogging 100% of CPU, then the System becomes gradually unresponsive within a minute or so (panel, metacity, finally mouse cursor freezes too).
Alternatively, in case of a black screen immediately upon resume, Alt+Print+K works (EDIT: or not), and the system remains usable.
Additionally, i don't know if this is related, i noticed one process using 9999% of CPU for a second according to top, just thought i'd mention it.
This bug constitutes a regression, suspend does work flawlessly on this Laptop in Lenny.

The above is how it presented itself at the beginning on a fresh squeeze install, however, after two days of trying, i additionally get kerneloops messages i did not get before (again, after at least one suspend to ram) and after that the system becomes generally unstable (random applications won't properly open or terminate, including nautilus, evolution, iceweasel). Can this be due to secondary damage from the freezes and alt+print+reisubbing repeatedly?

The good news is, apart from this probably already damaged squeeze install, i have another one on one of my playground partitons, where i avoided suspend so far, so i can still try things out there. (it's kde, but i don't think it's related to the desktop environment).

Ubuntu Networking :: Natty Netman Connect/disconnect Wifi Every Minute?

Jun 26, 2011

I was happily running Ubuntu 9 but since I cannot get security updates for it anymore I had to upgrade to 11. Now I'm on Natty, and the "NetworkManager" apparently cannot deal with my latop's wifi card which worked fine for years under ubuntu 9. The laptop is a Dell latitude D610 and the card is an intel ipw2200 minipci. I used to just run /etc/init.d/network restart after I logged in to get the wireless to come up, if it failed by itself, but now I get a message that that's deprecated. Nice.

I'm running WPA. If I don't create a wireless configuration in the network manager, wireless never connects. Ever. If I do create a configuration, the connection comes up for about a minute, and then drops. And then comes up. And then drops. And then comes up. And then drops. It's insane. Also, I get a series of "Auto <ssid>" entries in the NM settings area.I dug around in /var/log, but all of the wpa_supplicant logs are of size 0, except the gzipped backups, which are all size 20. Go gzip. The syslog has some messages in it about 4-way handshake failed, and association taking too long, but since the laptop has no network connection I don't have an easy way to post those here.I just want the wireless to come up, by itself, when I turn on the laptop like it used to. I don't want to have to deal with retyping the (long and complicated) WPA password every time I wake up the machine, nor deal with the "keychain." How do I get there?

OpenSUSE :: Time / Clock Resets - Random On 11.3

Sep 3, 2010

I done searches for "clock" and found similar threads, but no real fix that is working for me. My clock resets when I boot into linux. It does not happen in windows or bios even on cold boots. The battery is replaced and good** the old battery was by all measures dead (0.6v), but still seemed to have enough power for the clock, since windows tested fine with it.

I have tryed setting it to local time, UTC.. etc... My timezone is GMT (london). "sudo /sbin/hwclock --systohc" Although I have windows, I do not use it except the few times to test this, so no conflict.

I then had to install some packages to get mobile broadband working:It all works fine until I disconnect it via Gnome network manager. I cannot reconnect using Gnome network manager because it doesn't show in the menu, but it does show while I'm connected. If I pull the dongle out and plug it in again, it reconnects without issue.I think I may be missing some packages, but I don't know what. I tried usb-modeswitch, but no change

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom Network Card - WiFi Light Stays On All The Time ?

Dec 13, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 online today. I was using 10.04 32-bit before, and the network drivers were easy to find and install. Ubuntu did the job for me and they worked flawlessly. It was a relief I didn't need to search around.

Even though 10.10 (64bit) found the drivers for me, both ethernet and wireless, they do not seem to be working alright. I installed both, made a restart. I found that the WiFi light on my laptop stays on, even if the wireless network is turned off using either the key combination (Fn+F2), or manually turning it off.

Issues with the ethernet? I am right now using ethernet but it does not care to detect the connection. Empathy won't connect automatically as a result- says no network connection. But here I am, posting this. Evidently, there is a connection, right?

Issues with the wireless? The WiFi light stays on all the time, and it isn't able to get hang of the connection I have at home. It just won't show any wireless connections available. When I tried to connect by giving it the SSID and the encryption type and password, it didn't work. Just kept asking for the password again and again (I have checked with the router- the password is correct).

I have 128GB SSD with various partitions for operating systems and a separate HDD for the /home folders for each OS. Wheezy is my primary system, the others, apart from the original XP are experimental.

/etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf is

The problem is that each time I use the Ubuntu system and I change back to Debian, the greeter background contains snippets of whatever was displayed while I was in Ubuntu. What I don't understand is how this can happen, given that the operating systems are installed in separate partitions with separate /home partitions as well. After I have used Debian and restart, the greeter screen is clear, as it should be.URL....

Debian :: Suddenly High IO From Random Processes?

Jun 27, 2011

I try to open an application, and it's painfully slow, and i think "this is weird i've had it open just 10 seconds ago and it should be in the cache". the disk is constantly working, so maybe i ran out of ram and it's swapping, so i check: according to 'free -m', about 200m of 2g ram is used (without buffers/cache), but still also 200m of swap is used, although swappiness is set to 1 (low tendency to swap). so this is not normal.also, kswapd0 is eating pretty much cpu (but not 100%). switching to tty1, logging in, and starting iotop takes about a minute. according to iotop, about 8 random processes (could be a browser, could be some daemon) have 99% IO activity (i'm not sure what that means, how can 8 processes take 99% each?).after the first 3 times, i disabled swap by adding swapoff -a to rc.local, but it's still the same, and kswapd is still among the cpu-eaters.

Debian :: A Bunch Of Random Doubts Interconnected?

Dec 8, 2010

My new laptop has an Intel i7 processor and 6gb DDR3 of ram, I really didn't know which architecture to use and I ended up installing Debian amd64 ( Squeeze because it's the one I used in my older computer ). I decided to add Backtrack 4 R2 repositories to my /etc/apt/sources.list, and after doing:

#aptitude update

I found out that they don't have support for amd64 repos...1st: is it possible to make my aptitude accept the Backtrack's i386 repos? if yes, how? if not, can I switch to i386 and be able my laptop's 6gb ram ? if yes, would that sacrifice a lot of performance?( I did choose amd64 because I thought that I wouldn't be able to use more than 4gb of ram with the i386 build. Is this correct? )

Final note: I want you to know that I already tried to install aircrack from Debian's repos but it's not present, I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my configuration.

*this is what my /etc/apt/sources.list looks like:

Debian Hardware :: Random Wireless LAN Disconnects

Aug 14, 2014

I have installed Debian Wheezy on my laptop today, which went relativly smoothly. The only problem that is left (for now) is that my wireless LAN disconnects 1-2 times every 30 minutes, just to reconnect a few seconds later. Obviously that is very annoying, especially when watching streams on twitch, videos on youtube and so on.A thread I found on google suggested to use the command dmesg right after my wireless lan connection drops. So I waited for the next disconnect, issued the command and got the following output:

Code: Select allwlan0: deauthenticated from 00:1f:3f:d4:25:6a (Reason: 14)
wlan0: deauthenticating from 00:1f:3f:d4:25:6a by local choice (reason=14)

I wondered what that reason code meant and found this website, which states that the code 14 stands for: Message integrity code (MIC) failure

This is happening in windowed and full-screen mode. I have to use "pkill vlc" each time twice then start VLC again. I have had to resort to mplayer for the time being. I am running squeeze. I was not experiencing this problem before though (started within the past week), so it must be due to some recent upgrade. I have tried "aptitude purge vlc && aptitude install vlc", but I am still experiencing the same problem.

Debian Hardware :: Audio - Random Loss Of Sound

Jan 9, 2015

I'm having problems keeping audio working. Using Sparky with 3.16.0-4 kernel on a homebuilt PC. AMD A10-7850K CPU on a Gigabyte F2A88FN-WIFI mobo.

I'm using a set of Logitech Z-5 USB speakers and I repeatedly lose all audio output. To get it back I need to do 1 or all of these steps:

1) Unplug the speakers
2) Kill all processes that may be producing audio (Chrome beta, IceWeasel, Exaile, etc.)
3) Start Alsamixer and select another source in sound card list then reselect USB card #2.
4) The weird one - Remove and then re-add the volume applet that I like to have in the panel. When I lose sound th slider gets "stuck" and will not move. It will not recover.

I may need to repeat this several times but it will come back. Not immediately after any step but after a few attempts it just begins working as long as nothing is trying to produce audio at the moment. Sometimes Alsamixer says that my USB Card has no controls when I reselect it, not every time though.

Most of the time if I have more than 1 source open at any time it is likely to die again, for instance I like to stream Google Play Music. If I pause that but leave it open, then try to watch a Youtube video or other source I will either get no audio from either source, or lose the streaming audio source when I try to restart it. Going through the above routine 1 or more times usually restores it.

I have created asoundrc.conf file to tell system to use USB audio as described here -> [URL] ..... In my case USB is # 3 in the list. So this is my file:

Code: Select allpcm.!default {
type hw
card 2
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 2
