Debian :: Suddenly High IO From Random Processes?

Jun 27, 2011

I try to open an application, and it's painfully slow, and i think "this is weird i've had it open just 10 seconds ago and it should be in the cache". the disk is constantly working, so maybe i ran out of ram and it's swapping, so i check: according to 'free -m', about 200m of 2g ram is used (without buffers/cache), but still also 200m of swap is used, although swappiness is set to 1 (low tendency to swap). so this is not normal.also, kswapd0 is eating pretty much cpu (but not 100%). switching to tty1, logging in, and starting iotop takes about a minute. according to iotop, about 8 random processes (could be a browser, could be some daemon) have 99% IO activity (i'm not sure what that means, how can 8 processes take 99% each?).after the first 3 times, i disabled swap by adding swapoff -a to rc.local, but it's still the same, and kswapd is still among the cpu-eaters.

CentOS 5 :: High CPU Utilization For All Processes?

Apr 9, 2010

I am getting a strange problem with my new machine (P4 3Ghz, 1 GB RAM DDR333). The machine is an industrial PC. Firstly I had installed Fedora Core 2 on it. It ran superbly without any problem. I tried to load Redhat Enterprise Linux WS4 (Update 2 as well as Update 5) on it. But the PC was giving high CPU utilization for each and every task. With-out any application running both the cores shows utilization around 10 %. But when i try to my application, the CPU utilization in one of the cores goes to 100 % for majority of the time. This is causing my appilcation to run slowly when compared to the same application running on the same machine under fedora core 2. (CPU Utilization around peak 17 % in either of the cores in Fedora Core2) Recently I installed Cent OS 5 on it. But the behavior of the PC remains the same as of Redhat Enterprise Linux WS4. Some-where on the forums I had read about the RAM size. So i tried to downgrade the RAM from 1 GB to 256 MB. But the problem remains the same. I think it has to do with some kernel tweaking.

Fedora :: Unrar Suddenly Slow / Make It High?

Dec 11, 2009

I've just noticed that unrar is suddenly taking minutes to extract instead of seconds.

I can remember if its recently been updated, but I've uninstalled and reinstalled it and the version is: unrar.x86_64 0:3.7.8-3.fc10

I've found a few Ubuntu posts about it on Google, but in true Ubuntu fashion nobody has any answers!

What's odd is that when I unrar a file from (Nautilus or "unrar x *.rar") it takes say 4mins, then if I do it again it takes 15secs, like as if its caching somewhere.

Ubuntu Servers :: Run High-priority Multi-threaded Processes In The Background?

Apr 7, 2011

Using Ubuntu server 10.04.2 64-bit all up to date.

I am running multi-threaded processes. These use OpenMP in my own code and the multi-threaded ACML maths library. When run in the foreground, everything is fine i.e. if I have set

export OMP_NUM_THREADS=8

then when I start all 8 cores are in use and things whizz along. However, when running overnight and logged out using e.g. 'at now + 1 minute' then the command, I am only getting about 130% CPU and it slows down accordingly. I have tried renice'ing and calling from within a bash script in case sh is doing something odd but nothing seems to solve it. I am sure that in the recent past this wasn't the case.

The libraries being used are shared versions in case that might have any bearing.

Debian :: Rc.d Permanently Stopping Processes ?

Feb 21, 2011

I will be switching to Debian soon and have been forming a large script with a vbox test system to automate my system configuration when I switch.

When I install lamp (Or basically it's equivalent packages) apache and mysql start up automatically.

I could just use update-rc.d to remove the autostart but whenever there's a security or feature update for the package the files get replaced.

In addition, for some reason the system thinks it's a good idea to autostart half a dozen apache2 processes at the same time, sucking up a good 150Mb ram when not doing anything. (Anyone know why?)

How would I stop my system from doing this? Could I "chmod 000" the /etc/init.d files?

Debian :: Hidden Processes On Squeeze X86?

Jul 18, 2011

This morning I ran unhide on my Squeeze x86 netbook. The brute force process detection came up with ahidden process. Repeated runs of unhide with the system in various states continued to show the process, but with a different PID each time.(Or maybe it was spawning new processes and killing itself every second or so. A newer version of unhide, which I compile from source, did describe the process as "maybe transient" or omesuch. Anyway, I've unhide on Squeeze before, and I know that detection of any hidden process is absolutely not normal.)Also, rkhunter found some hidden directories. Of particular note, I think, is /etc/.java, which contains evenmore hidden stuff. It *might* be system-wide preferences for the JVM, but somehow I doubt it.

So, I have two questions...1. Do I really have a rootkit or trojan infection? It looks like it, but I want confirmation that I'm not chasingphantoms. (Or that I am, whichever.)2. If so, how can I prevent a recurrence? FWIW I was running without iptables or any other firewall, but I madesure all my ports were closed; and I did most of my browsing through Chromium, which should have pretty

Debian :: High End (But Not Bleeding Edge) Build?

Sep 10, 2011

Some searches seemed to indicate that it's been awhile since there's been a build thread, so I thought I'd start one. I'm looking to replace a six-year old machine (Athlon XP 3200+ processor (introduced in 2003), integrated graphics with no dedicated graphics card). I'm rocking Windows XP Home Edition (32 bit).

I'm not a "computer hobbyist," far from it. I use my machine mainly for browsing, word processing, and business (QuickBooks and Turbo Tax). It is a tool. I don't really enjoy fiddling around with computers. My current machine is now barely able to support a good research session on the 'Net anymore, the little processor seemingly gagging on the heavy flash content you see everywhere nowadays, the 2GB (the most she'll take) of RAM easily filled.

I'm planning some rough travel international motorcycle trips (see my motorcycle build thread here (don't worry about registering on this motorcycle forum.....they are good folks and I've never gotten any spam from them) and purchased, a while back, an Asus eee PC 901 with the OEM Xandros (a bastardized offshoot of Etch) loaded to use with those trips. From learning that OS, I saw for myself the benefits of Linux (vs. Windows). Of all the distros, Debian is the most attractive to me (even though I'm currently rocking Puppeee (new version) on the 901.....it makes that little machine zoooooom!) as I really like the package management system, the logic, and the stability. I also like the feeling of personal responsibility that comes with Debian.

So, back to the build. I'm currently planning on it being a pure Debian machine. I'm ready to move on from Windows, for reasons I don't have to explain here. I stated that I don't particularly care to "play" with computers, but I'm willing to put in some front end labor in order to enjoy a long-term, low-maintenance relationship with my new machine. With that philosophy in mind, I'm looking to build a machine that will serve my simple needs for ten years(!) So, since the costs will be spread out so far, I'm ready to drop some serious (for me) coin on this project in order to avoid having to go through what is, for me, a rather painful process of research again any time soon.

Debian Configuration :: Java Uses High CPU In Jessie

Jun 24, 2015

I have a relative fresh install of jessie in which I face a high cpu usage of java (top shows about 165% CPU and 12% MEM). The problem occurs right after booting the computer. These values stay constantly high for days if I leave the box running. This happens even if the computer is just sitting there without doing anything.

I have to kill java to go back to normal. So, when I do a
Code: Select allkillall -KILL java
the problem goes away. After that it doesn't reappear and I can use all apps installed without a problem.

Currently I am based on openjdk
Code: Select allupdate-alternatives --display java
java - auto mode
  link currently points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java - priority 1071
  slave java.1.gz: /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/man/man1/java.1.gz
Current 'best' version is '/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java'.

But I have also tried the SUN version with the same result.

Where to look to find more information on what exactly java app is using so much resources and how I can solve it? I guess I could just put somewhere in rc.d a kill java command and forget about it but I would really like to find out whats going on...

Debian :: Synaptic/update Manager Causes Duplicate Scim Processes?

Jan 18, 2011

[rant]Ok, I've been ignoring this for a couple of months, but now it's gotten to me and I want to know what's causing it.[/rant] Here's my problem. I have scim 1.4-9 (latest) installed for Japanese input. It works fine. I have no problems with it. However, when I launch Synaptic or update manager a duplicate instance of scim starts. This is on Debian Squeeze. See below:

Fresh reboot:

Code:

scim-bridge 34.2MIB
scim-helper-manager 32.7MIB
scim-launcher x2 47.8MIB, 165.4MIB
scim-panel-gtk 153.2MIB

After launching Synaptic or Update manager:

B signifies before as above

Code:

B scim-bridge 34.2MIB
scim-bridge 34.2MIB
B scim-helper-manager 32.7MIB
scim-helper-manager 32.8MIB

[code].....

It's not a huge deal, because when I close said programs, the duplicate process stop. I just find it odd because these are the only two programs that seem to cause it. Oh, and I'm using Gnome, if that matters.

Debian :: Some Apps Suddenly Crashes With Segmentation Fault

Feb 16, 2016

I noticed weird behavior with some of the installed applications. It all started with Guake when I wanted to use it. My shortcut key is F4, I hit F4 and nothing showed up. So I run Guake in terminal, everything fine. Then I hit F4 key and after few seconds Guake crashes with message "Segmentation fault". Nothing more, just that. Then I noticed that Audacity does the same, Gdebi too and even Reportbug app does that (I'm not sure about "segmentation fault", but the app crashes). I don't remember doing anything special or installing any app. All I can think of is this message when booting the system

Code: Select allsystemd[1]: Job rpcbind.service/start deleted to break ordering cycle starting with basic.target/start

No idea, if there is any connection. Is there anyway, how I can maybe see more behind that "Segmentation fault" error? I found history.log in /var/log/apt/, so I'm thinking about looking into it and see if I really did not installed anything. I have a little feeling that it might have started after some update, but I'm not sure about that..

Debian Hardware :: Sound Suddenly Does Not Work Anymore

Apr 11, 2013

I'm running on Debian Testing, and I just distro-upgraded from Squeeze just a month ago. When I did, I had some strange sound and video problems. For the sake of this topic I'm just talking about the sound ones. Back then, my sound would only work as root, otherwise without any visible errors, I would play sound files and no audio would come out. I'm aware that this usually means that my user is not a member of the 'audio' group, but I did and Ihave confirmed it and all of my users are. Then, suddenly my sound inexplicably started working again, so I took it as it was. However two hours ago it disappeared again. The important information here is that nothing I did as a user could have effected it. All I did was let a video file buffer, write a text file to my documents, and send an email.

According to Alsamixer my sound card is HDA Intel & my chip is SigmaTel STAC9200. When I upgraded to Wheezy, the terminal told me that I would need to install proprietary drivers to get my sound (and especially) video working, however every tutorial I've found on how to do this seems to dead-end for my computer on the current testing branch of Debian.
