View 2 Replies View RelatedJust a little background I have a sony vaio VPCZ119X laptop and have been struggling to get all components working under linux especially the intel graphics. I saw that once I upgraded to the latest available kernel release which currently is 2.6.37 rc7. The intel graphics is working, but sometimes when I boot I get a blank/black screen but seems to be lit up. All other functions seem working so for example I am able to login etc just that I dont see anything on the screen.
I have tried the following so far to identify the issue or isolate it:
- Switching to the console screens has no effect, still the black / blank screen.
- Restarting the system does not always immediately get the screen working, sometimes it takes a couple of reboots before the screen is available
- I have a switchable graphics with nVidia I never get this problem when I use the nvidia driver
- I have tried closing the lid etc as suggested in the below post without any change in output, will try further as there are other options available as well The "Black Screen" on Boot I see one difference between both the Xorg log files but I am not able to reason out why this happens hence I will just supply the files here and try not to theorize.
Xorg.0.log - This was the log output when I got the X display working Xorg.o.log.old - This was the log output when the X display was black/blank Also to highlight that I am using the latest kernel release that is still being tested I guess so maybe it is also a bug in the kernel?
Pretty much what the title says.. a few more details:
- I installed 10.04 using the alternative install so I've been doing all this in safe mode
- I installed a newer kernel (2.6.33) and still black screen
- I tried to install an updated Intel xorg driver, but I kept getting dependency errors (xorg, x11, something else)
I read another thread on this forum from a user who is using the same platform (Intel HM55), and I got stuck at the last point (can't get Intel xorg driver to install).
I installed Squeeze, it had kernel 2.6.30-2-686,it was upgraded to 2.6.32-trunk-686,now it is 2.6.32-3-686.What does the -trunk- mean?

Is the solution for this to install the driver from Realtek? [URL] If so, the instructions said to check if the driver was already installed, but what does the output below mean?

Previously running Squeeze I was using the proprietary driver and never had any issues. Now using the nouveau driver video playback of mp4 files is glitchy and programs like google earth don't operate smoothly. I installed the nvidia driver from the repositories based on this guide, used nvidia-xconfig to generate an xorg.config file. I made sure noeveau was blacklisted and rebooted my machine.
I was greeted with a black screen. So I booted up in recovery mode, used telinit 2 (side note: what happened to /etc/inittab???) to change to a runlevel that doesn't start X, and confirmed that nouveau was, in fact, not loaded. Typed startx and without any errors or warnings the screen went black. ctrl+alt+fN wouldn't bring me back to a terminal, but hitting the power button did shut down X and halt the machine.
I'm not really sure how to go about debugging this as I get no useful output from anything, just a blank screen and that's it.
For the time being I just blacklisted the nvidia driver and let the system boot with nouveau; I'd still like to get the nvidia driver working properly, though. I've always just downloaded the driver right from nvidia and installed it, but I know that isn't the best way to do it. I'd rather not screw up a brand new system, it's so nice and fast with the new SSD.
I'm always getting a blank console screen after booting a 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 kernel in squeeze. I still can read the line "Loading, please wait ..." in the display for a second - then it's completely black until X windows is starting. When I try switching from the X console to another virtual console (by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 e. g.), the complete system freezes. I have to hard reboot then.When I boot the previous 2.6.32-3-amd64 kernel instead, everything is fine as expected, though.There's a line "GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x16@60" in /etc/default/grub as well as a line "set gfxpayload=keep" in /etc/grub.d/00_header. So the problem might be framebuffer related in any way. Any ideas what could be tried?The system is a Latitude E6500 with a Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller

I had to type: /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop The nvidia driver wouldn't install because the 'make' command was missing in a path or something. Now I cannot get the GUI anymore. startx gives me a blank screen rebooting the computer gives me a blank screen. I can only boot in recovery mode. but the nic doesnt work so no internet connection.

I also use an HDMI cord (since computer has HDMI support) so this may be contributing to the problem. The same does not occur with my laptop, which runs Nvidia graphics and Ubuntu. I really want this to not happen so I can play my games instantly without restarting a million times. Some games have yet to work (AssaultCube mostly).
I have updated to ubuntu 10 and with it the new version of grub. My windows is not booting up , when i select windows xp from the menu i get a black screen and nothing ever happens, no errors , no mesages. I found this problem a lot on the internet but i no solution yet.

In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.

I have few questions since i manually builded xorg-server 1.8 im wondering what packages are dependent for x11 to be upgraded so everything run smoothly for xserver 1.8. are those xf86-input* and xf86-video* the only one or there are other packages that i have to get rebuilded? the second question: im wondering if im the only one for that having a problem of that lastest driver dosent work for me, for the purpose i rebuilded the driver and libdrm 2.4.20 with kms enabled once i installed xorg-xserver 1.8.0

I can't seem to get a screen on my Asus Netbook 1005pe. I did install the xf86-video-intel-2.10.0-i486-1.txz & kubdrn-2.4.17-i486-1.txz.I'm also having a Kernel Modesetting issue. Below is my Xorg.conf file & my Xorg.0.log file. Sorry if I am not explaining myself correctly.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Fedora 10 on a Gateway Machine. I tried to install the corresponding drivers for acceleration but it seems to have broken the display. After the loading splash screen, the screen goes black and does not respond to anything. I did manage to see the Grub boot loader by pressing 3 a number of times while booting the machine. Any ideas for how to revert the computer to its normal display so i can try again at getting these drivers working. It is a tad bit annoying not having a display but hell, this distro is already as far as I can see 10x as good as Ubuntu.

I somehow managed to get into the console and .. there's something wrong with the video card driver ( no way I could catch it into a picture ).
This was the exact reason why my Fedora CD was laying on the corner for months - I remember having this issue earlier as well.

After installing Ubuntu and seeing my resolution would only go to 800 x 600, I found this strange. A message popped up about the nVidia drivers I could downlaod that would enable me to do more so I did. I restarted and all was fine. Nice effects, high resolution. However, after going on XP, then going onto Ubuntu, the screen ahs gone black. The white Ubuntu logo can be seen for a while as it loads, but then the monitor goes completely blank as I hear the sound when the log-in screen appears.As I said in my title, it was the 185 driver
