Slackware :: No Screens & Intel / No Kernel Modesetting Driver Detected
Apr 7, 2010
I can't seem to get a screen on my Asus Netbook 1005pe. I did install the xf86-video-intel-2.10.0-i486-1.txz & kubdrn-2.4.17-i486-1.txz.I'm also having a Kernel Modesetting issue. Below is my Xorg.conf file & my Xorg.0.log file. Sorry if I am not explaining myself correctly.

I use OpenSuse 11.1. My graphic card is an intel Q43/Q45 chip. I was instructed to update my xorg and mesa packages in order to make on application work (it was crashing my x server). After I did so, x wouldn't start:
intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected
Screen(s) found, but none having a usable configuration
Now I am stuck with vesa if I want to have x running at all. I tried reverting to the versions of mesa and xorg I had before, when everything worked, but to no avail.
What can I do? (I am by no means an expert and that I don't know linux very well, and even less openSuse... just has to use it at work....)

I dl the windows installer one and ran it. As it started it went to the Ubuntu logo and then my screen became half full of different colored horizontal lines, so I rebooted and went into the adv boot and ran the install under safe graphics mode. Now when I boot I get options to boot into 2.6.32-25 and also a recovery and also 2.6.32.24 and a recovery. I left the 2.6.32-25 highlighted and it booted but gave me a msg that said:
(EE) VESA: Kernal modesetting driver in use, refusing to load.
(EE) No devices detected.
Then it goes to a screen that allows me to boot in a low graphics mode. It loads and I dl some security updates with the Update Manager. What do I need to do in order to boot w/o any faults and also what is the difference from 2.6.32-25 and 2.6.32-24? Which should I be using? Do I need to modify my graphis somehow?

Im having a battle for quite some time now with lastest intel driver now and wondering if someone has solution. Ive checked :[URL].. and i decided to have exact same version of everything listed in there installed on the system.
I have few questions since i manually builded xorg-server 1.8 im wondering what packages are dependent for x11 to be upgraded so everything run smoothly for xserver 1.8. are those xf86-input* and xf86-video* the only one or there are other packages that i have to get rebuilded? the second question: im wondering if im the only one for that having a problem of that lastest driver dosent work for me, for the purpose i rebuilded the driver and libdrm 2.4.20 with kms enabled once i installed xorg-xserver 1.8.0
heres log problem:

I have Radeon HD 3870, which is limited to 2D purposes I understand...
Will this mean that I cannot use DRI? Will it have a performance impact in 2D applications?
Does DRI make watching movies on PC 'better'? Especially 720p ones.

Enabling kernel modesetting on my computer breaks graphics, but Xorg.log and syslog don't tell me much, because they don't log any error.
The symptoms are the following: boot goes on normally, then the KDM login screen is corrupted. On the login screen there is a big square instead of the cursor, and that square does move as I move the mouse. If I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 I'll get a black screen instead of the terminal, and from there I cannot go back to virtual terminal 7 for login. The only thing I can do is to issue sys-requests for read-only remount and reboot.
Where could I start looking for the problem? What does it seem to be related to, Xorg, kernel, radeon driver?

I've been using it since it was put on current and have been having X crash on me repeatedly or getting a black screen from which I can only recover by a hard reboot. This is happening under a couple of different WMs without compositing (so this isn't the same issue that I was having with KDE and xscreensaver).
I'm using the i915 driver with stock 2.6.37.6, but I also tried a 2.6.38.2 kernel but had the same problem with both.
Here's a backtrace (for what it is worth):
Code:

I upgraded to -current last night hoping to improve my Intel 845G graphics controllers functioning in X, I've had to use the vesa driver for stability. The upgrade was completed but KDE seems as slow as ever. Here's some snippets from Xorg.0.log:
X.Org X Server 1.7.5
Release Date: 2010-02-16
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Slackware 13.1 Slackware Linux Project
Current Operating System: Linux speedy 2.6.33-smp #2 SMP Sat Feb 27 20:12:16 CST 2010 i686
code....
It seems I'm still using the vesa driver, any ideas on why the intel isn't being used and how to fix it?

In the past, I've rebuilt the kernel with the i915 driver built-in, and that works fine. But is there any way to do this without recompiling your kernel? I read that I shouldn't use vga=XXX with Intel KMS.
I tried adding the i915 module to my initrd, but that gives me an error message on boot. Something like "Unable to initialize the agpgart module"

I tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 but after I enabled my second monitor through nVidia settings I couldn't boot. At that point I didn't know the problem had to do with that. I tried to reinstall Ubuntu but the install hanged so I downloaded and tried Mint thinking that the CD was defect. Now after enabling the second monitor via nVidia Settings I can't boot still. Bootup stalls at "Checkingg battery". I can press CTRL+ALT+F1 to open a shell. If I type "startx" then I get this:
[code]...
I tryied "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". My graphic card is G92 Geforce 8800GT. Driver used is 173.14.30.

I read over the X11 acceleration in this forum but I'm not having issues with acceleration - running slackware 13 with built in ATI AGP stuff in kernel. Glxgears is putting out what I would expect for a 9600 pro (2500 FPS in the little window). I haven't needed you guys for a very long time but I just formatted Ubuntu (was getting on my nerves) and installed slack 12 on my hp netbook and 13 on my old desktop without a hitch - except this
I NEED BIG DESKTOP! I've searched, I've read, I've wondered! What's the normal setup in xorg.conf for bigdesktop WITHOUT the ATI driver (I ran the driver after building a custom kernel and the installer crashed with "Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version" - I think I should of renamed my kernel path and setup differently or something)? Is BigDesktop ONLY supported with the driver? I know now that the driver wont work for my system - How do I enable bigdesktop with the open source driver I built in?

I have a following problem. I have FS Amilo PI 3525 laptop and a Linux Slackware 12.2 installed on it. Everything works just fine except for the graphics card. The screen looks a bit fuzzy, like a sand effect. I have the same situation with any Linux distributions that I've installed on it except for "Mandriva 2009 One". There the graphics card works perfectly. My questions is - how could I extract drivers from Mandriva ISO and integrate them into my Slackware ISO so that the drivers get installed during the installation of my Slackware?

I have Slackware 13.0 installed with the newest stable kernel (2.6.32.3) on an hp notebook with ati hd3200 igp. What happens is that when I try to buildpkg the catalyst drivers, it fails on the new kernel but not on the original one. I've been searching for a solution for a few days now. found a few that involved patching some files, but none seem to work or I can't make them work. I could probably use the binary installer but I would prefer not to.
Here's the output:
Code:
sh ./ati-driver-installer-9-11-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Slackware/Only_Module
Created directory fglrx-install.hokais

I have made a full install of Slack 13.37.0. When I try to run the installer of the NVIDIA GF 8400GS card (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.29-pkg1.run) downloaded from [URL], I receive an error message. It says that the kernel source cannot be indetified/found. /lib/modules/2.6.37.6-smp/source and .../build links to /usr/src/linux-2.6.37.6-smp, which contains the full kernel source (can be compiled), including the header .h files in include/linux. I'm using Slackware 13.0 on rather old PC with old Riva TNT2 video card. Default driver is "nv". Everything work fine, but without hardware 2D acceleration under X.
After studying various manuals I
1. downloaded Nvidia binary package suitable for my video card.
2. Recompile kernel without Riva framebuffer support.
3. Start Nvidia script.
Script said: "Error: unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured...""
Kernel sources are in /usr/src/linux-2.6.29.6 I have all kernel packages installed. I was trying various switches for script in order to show the right path - nothing! 8 Some people say that Nvidia script don't like 4th digit in a kernel's name and get it from "uname -r" output. Can I change it somehow?

I have installed xubuntu 10.04 on a HP Pavilion dv1049ea and am having trouble installing the drivers for the graphics card. When installing i had to use the boot option -xforcevesa in order to get the screen working. Now that it is installed there is constant screen flicker but apart from that all other aspects of the system are working fine. In the display menu i am unable to change the refresh rate. How do i change the running driver from vesa to the correct intel driver? The graphics card is an Intel Graphics 82852/82855.
