Debian Configuration :: Blank Console Screen With 2.6.32-trunk-amd64?

Apr 13, 2010

I'm always getting a blank console screen after booting a 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 kernel in squeeze. I still can read the line "Loading, please wait ..." in the display for a second - then it's completely black until X windows is starting. When I try switching from the X console to another virtual console (by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 e. g.), the complete system freezes. I have to hard reboot then. When I boot the previous 2.6.32-3-amd64 kernel instead, everything is fine as expected, though. There's a line "GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x16@60" in /etc/default/grub as well as a line "set gfxpayload=keep" in /etc/grub.d/00_header. So the problem might be framebuffer related in any way. Any ideas what could be tried? The system is a Latitude E6500 with a Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller

Debian Configuration :: Can't Build Modules With 2.6.38-2-amd64 Packages

Apr 14, 2011

My new laptop works out of the box except for the video and the ethernet. For this, I have to use a later kernel than the Debian kernel (debian squeeze is currently 2.6.32). Upgrading to the new kernel (without moving to the testing dist itself) was pretty easy. I just installed linux-image-2.6.38-2-amd64 and linux-base from the testing distribution by manually downloading and using dpkg. After that, ethernet and video started working.

However, my virtualbox installation no longer works because the drivers do not match the kernel. I am used to this; whenever debian upgrades the kernel on me, I have to run "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup". This rebuilds the drivers. This failed for me, however, because it could not find the headers. So, I installed some more packages:

linux-kbuild-2.6.38
linux-headers-2.6.38-2-common
linux-headers-2.6.38-2-amd64

Now, when I rebuild it, I get this:

# /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules:.
Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules:.

Debian Configuration :: Slow Custom Kernel Build Amd64

Aug 17, 2011

I used make-kpkg to build the 3.0.0 source debian wheezy on a dual 3.4GHz Xeon/L1-16k/L2-1mb/800Mhz bus with 4GB PC2-3200 ECC ram and Ultra 320 SCSI, using CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=4 (2 hyperthreading cpus=4 cores). The build was slower than molasses in January! Top reported cpu usage total between 10% and 25%. Why won't the build use the amount of machine it has available. One footnote: I wasn't using swap space. It literally took over an hour to build the deb kernel package.

My notebook from 2003 is at least three times faster building the 3.0.0 debian kernel source. Is it possible that this might cause improvement: make -j4 KDEB_PKGVERSION=version deb-pkg

over

CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=4 make-kpkg --initrd --revision=123x kernel_image?

Could amd64 vs. i386 have some influence? Could the small processor caches on the XEON cpus have an effect. The 64-bit machine absolutely flies doing everything else. I'm miffed! I've used debian since woody, although I am not an expert, but I'm no slouch!

General :: Unable To Use Nvidia Driver On Debian Amd64

Mar 9, 2011

I installed the Nvidia driver for the on board GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a the "Debian way", according to this link Debian Nvidia Howto. The problem is that the only available screen resolutions are 640x480 & 320x240 and I need something more like 1024x768. The driver is installed correctly, or at least is properly recognized, as in Nvidia Xserver settings, GPU0 appears as GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a.

Here's the xorg.conf file.

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"

[code]....

..only causes gdm not to start. On my Ubuntu partition, I have working the proprietary Nvidia driver (file: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.36.run), and have had no problems from it at all. I was going to install this same driver onto Debian when I read several pages advising to go the "Debian way".

Debian :: Broadcom Wireless Driver For Squeeze

Feb 17, 2011

I have this PC that came with W7 installed..i am removing it to install Debian Squeeze.I already have burned the 8 DVDs plus the Squeeze Kde CD.AFAIK, BCM 4312 is a proprietary driver, not shipped with Squeeze, but present as source in Unstable..I have already downloaded the files also... will the built *.deb be enough to enable my wireless, or to i still have to do it by hand. remove confilicting modules, build the module, insert it, put it in the corresponding filder. does the deb install do all that, or do i still have to do it, "the good 'ol way"?

Debian Hardware :: How To Manually Install Broadcom B43 Driver

Jul 3, 2014

But let'start from the scratch. The wireless card interface in my laptop is one belonging to the "infamous", not Linux-friendly broadcom family.it is the BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (PCI-ID 14E4:4315). I downloaded the .iso image file of Wheezy 7.5 from the official repositories, put it on a USB key, and started the installation process with no internet connection. But during the installation, the installer informed me that some firmware was missing, i.e. ucode.fw and ucode15.fw.

Anyway, I went along and finished the installation. Of course, running Wheezy, I could not connect my laptop to my wireless modem just because of this problem, and so I needed a solution to install the right driver(s) but without a connection in my laptop! After long googling, finally I have found the solution [URL] ...., that is using the b43-fwcutter to extract the firmware from the Broadcom's proprietary driver. I simply report here the procedure to be followed, in a clear way:

By means of another PC with an internet connection, download the b43-fwcutter (version 018) from here: URL...Copy this file in the PC where you want the driver to be installed.Extract the b43-fwcutter tarball in a folder (tar xjf b43-fwcutter-018.tar.bz2, if you use the terminal), and then:

cd b43-fwcutter-018
make
su
(password)
make install

Now, after installing b43-fwcutter, download version 5.100.138 of Broadcom's proprietary driver from here: URL...Copy this file in the PC where you want the driver to be installed.Extract this tarball in a folder (the same as previous or another one): tar xjf broadcom-wl-5.100.138.tar.bz2 and finally extract the firmware from it:

su
(password)
b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware broadcom-wl-5.100.138/linux/wl_apsta.o.

The standard place in Wheezy 7.5 where firmware is installed to is /lib/firmware. In another distribution this could be different.

Debian Hardware :: Installing Driver For Broadcom Wireless Card Doesn't Work

Aug 29, 2010

I'm very new to Debian (and Linux in general), and am currently taking a Linux course at college... I'm trying to get Debian running on my MacBook Pro (late 2009 model) and it's been complicated but I've got the operating system installed on it... I'm just having a few problems, the biggest right now of which is my wireless card, which doesn't work. So, I found instructions on the Debian Wiki for getting the driver for it, but it's not compiled already and I have little knowledge of manually installing stuff through Linux...

Ubuntu :: How To Build 2.6.34 Amd64 Kernel With Load Balancing Patches For Lucid

May 20, 2010

This thread describes how to build a 2.6.34 kernel with load-balancing to cut down the number of load balancing wakeups. Running powertop on my amd64 PC shows that this kernel cuts down the number of wakeups by around 30%.

1. Open a gnome-terminal and get root privileges:

Code:

sudo -s

2. Install required packages for building the kernel:

Code:

apt-get install build-essential bin86 kernel-package libqt3-headers libqt3-mt-dev wget libncurses5 libncurses5-dev

3. Download the 2.6.34 kernel source file:

Code:

cd /usr/src
wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...2.6.34.tar.bz2

4a. Download the diff file for the patch from [URL] and save as (eg) patch-load-balancing.diff. Move it to /usr/src once you have downloaded it.

5. Untar the source file:

Code:

cd /usr/src
tar xjf linux-2.6.34.tar.bz2

6. Link /usr/src/linux to the resulting folder:

Code:

cd /usr/src
# the folder linux may exist as a symlink from previously; if so, remove it
if [ -e linux ]; then rm linux; fi
ln -s linux-2.6.34 linux

Ubuntu :: Solve The Wi-Fi Broadcom-driver In 11.04?

Apr 28, 2011

As you might have noticed the new broadcom driver in 11.04 is not working anymore, but you can use the old one from 10.10 if you follow these steps:

1. First you need to download the old broadcom driver (10.10) here:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...untu5_i386.deb

2. Now it's time to delete the current driver:

open the console:

sudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status

search for "bcmwl-kernel-source" and delete the lines that are related to the driver.

3. Install the driver you have downloaded before by double-clicking the .deb file

4. Go to the Synpatic-Package-Manager and search for "bcmwl-kernel-source" again. Click on on it and go to "package" and make sure you lock it, so it won't be updated.
