I installed Debian Squeeze using "dmraid=true" because I have an onboard RAID controller. Everything is fine except when I go into Nautilus I see, the raid array and the 2 disk inside the RAID array. This is a little confusing!
Is there a way to fix that? Is this only a bad config in fstab?
How long does hardware Raid card (raid 1, 2 drives)take to mirror a 1 TB drive (500gb used)?Is there a general rule of thumb for this?4 hours? 12 hours? 24 hours?

i have a WD Raptor drive i'm going to install and put a fresh install of linux on it. i'm just curious, will using a much faster HD as my main drive increase the speeds of my network transfers from the raid drive? do transfers only go as fast as the system drive?
Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:

As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.
For some reason, my CD/DVD drive is not visible in Nautilus. I I can't see it either as a top-level item in Tree or Places views or in File System > /media. There is a /media/cdrom entry, but nothing in it, even with a DVD in the drive. When I type "sudo blkid," there is no entry for the DVD drive. It is physically connected and I can read from it when I dual-boot into Windows XP; just can't find it in Ubuntu
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter using "safely remove drive" on a usb drive automatically mounted (in lucid lynx) i no longer have the ability to remount that drive without cycling its power.I don't know if it has anything to do with removing the "unmount" option from nautilus in favor of cleaning up menu.Anyway I didnt see any forum posts on the issue ---ps. anyone have trouble using a proprietary gfx driver (nvidia for me), a custom console resolution (specified by grub), and the splash screen - when trying to access the ctrl-alt-function tty's?seems the resolution is all screwed up or something and i cant see the login prompt. disabling splash via grub fixed it fine (EDIT - did not fix it)
View 7 Replies View RelatedI want nautilus to automatically mount my external drive when ubuntu 10.04 starts. This drive is encrypted, but the key has already been stored and all I have to do is click on it in my Places menu for it to mount.
It mounts to: /media/Will's Drive
I feel like I shouldn't have to edit fstab or anything like that. If I can add it to my startup programs, that would be great, I just need to know the command to get nautilus to open up /media/Will's Drive at startup.
Under Ubuntu 11.04, Nautilus isn't seeing my second hard drive (ext3 200GB). ...It's a backup of my home folder that was on the Ubuntu 8.04 primary drive. So how does one go about copying the data from the second hard drive to the primary hard drive then?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) with Gnome Classic (no effects) desktop. I have an external USB drive on which I have cloned my sda drive that contains my Ubuntu partition and an XP partition. Both of these partitions mount automatically. For some reason, Nautilus opens randomly on its own for each of these partitions. When this happens, two copies of Nautilus open; one for each of the partitions. I have not been able to discern any pattern for when nautilus opens. This actually began to happen in Maverick shortly before I upgraded to Natty. Any ideas on what the cause is and how I can stop this from happening?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having some trouble with usb flash drive lately:when plugging in: all nautilus windows close all icons disappear from the desktop but reappear seconds later after a couple of seconds of high cpu usage I can open a new nautilus windows and the drive is properly mounted.I have apport enabled: once in a while there is apport running and trying to gather a report which cannot be sent because it is an assert failure.. once in a blue moon apport gives me the not-enough-memory error message (screenshot here) but I don't think it should need more than 400MB I had at that moment.dmesg gives this..:

I don't know why it's happening or what caused it, but just a few minutes ago it occurred that every time I unmount/power down my external hard drive from within the Nautilus browser, Ubuntu freezes and Caps Lock starts blinking, indicative of a kernel panic. It doesn't do this when I Safely Remove the drive from the right-click menu on the drive's desktop icon. Even stranger is that no other external device I've tried causes the panic. It only does this with this particular external hard drive and it's a repeatable error.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? EDIT: To note, I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with the 2.6.32.33 kernel. Not Ubuntu 11.04.
I currently have a 1.5TB sata drive connected to my system, with data already on it. In the next few days I am planning to use mdadm to create a raid5 array with another 2 1.5TB drives along with the one I already have. Is it possible to create the raid without losing the data on my current hard drive? Obviously it will be backed up before hand just in case, but it would be nice not to have to restore nearly a TB of data after raid'ing the drives.

The operating system resides on a hard drive not defined as a part of the RAID. The RAID was setup as striped.The sata_nv driver is loaded.why the OS would not be seeing the raid as a single drive?

I'm working in a project where I have to plug and unplug USB drives many times, and Nautilus opening every time is really annoying. I tried to use gconf-edit and set the keys apps>nautilus>preferences>media_automount and media_automount_open to false, but it didn't work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe have recently upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 64bit from 10.04 and 10.10 in a networked office in which our home directories are mounted on a server raid array. Ubuntu considers that the home directory is a local drive rather than on a networkWe have noticed that file preview are very very slow in 11.04 for pdf's and pictures in nautilus, causing a lag of around 10 seconds for each file. This can cause a problem for folders which hold multiple files which can be previewed. Preview worked fine in previous versions of ubuntu on the same machine, with the same network setup. Previewing of actual local files works faster, but is slower on 11.04, than previous versions.
Both the 10.10 and 11.04 systems are up to date with available updates (11.04 - 2.32.2.1 and 2.30.1 on ubuntu 10)Obviously, there is a work around for this problem - turn off preview. But, it would be nice to turn it on as its a useful feature.
I have 4 1.5 TB Seagate drives configured in RAID 5 via mdadm on Karmic. It seems that after a while, one drive always drops out of the array. It's a brand new drive, and after a reboot, it will come back in and rebuild just fine, so somehow I doubt the drive is actually failing. Here's a dmesg snip. The mounting that happens at the top is the mounting of the array, and as you can see, after a while, there is some kind of write failure.

I am trying to create a RAID data drive for my system but I am having setting it up since I am a total linux noob.
The system has 3 physical HDD-s:
1. 320 GB (has functional Ubuntu 9.10 installation) attached to a PCI SATA card
2. 2TB on motherboard
3. 2TB on PCI SATA card
I want to create a software RAID1 of disks 2 and 3. So far I have used the Palimpsest Disk Utility:
- Created a GUID Partition table on both disks (2, 3)
- Used File -> New -> Software Array, made sure both my drives were included
- Once Palimpsest listed the RAID Drive as a Software RAID Array, I told it to create Ext3 filesystem on it
Well.. at least thats what I thought I did. At this point I have been able to mount the RAID drive and put files on it. However when I look at its information in Palimpsest, I am told that the drive is not partitioned. Both RAId components /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdc1 are reported to be in Sync, but the RAID Drive's own state is 'Running, Resyncing @ 45%' (and lowly growing).
My questions are: Is this a normal setup or did I do something incorrectly? Why is the drive reporting to have no partition? And howcome I can use it if it does not have a partition? I have found the command line based configurations to be a tad too confusing to follow, so I have tried to stick to graphical tools - is this a hopeless cause in Ubuntu or is it possible to achieve what I want to do without command line? I will list some info on my disks below - perhaps this offers more insight to those of you more familiar with Linux.

I kept my movies on a 2 drive software raid1 mirror, but now I changed my mind about needing a raid and pulled one of the drives for another use. Can I convert the remaining raid drive back to a regular single drive and keep the data in place? Can I change the raid partition back to regular partition and be able to mount it?

Is there a way that I can load raid driver (if exists) during installing Ubuntu?
I've just installed ubuntu 10.10 (64bit) on my 1TB drive where as I have my windows drives on a seperate 2x 1TB drives in RAID and am not exactly sure how to mount it.
I am not finding it under computer or under NTFS configuration tool and when I click mount under storage device manager it does nothing, although does detect the RAID array as /dev/sda2
After keeping my old (laptop) computer going for 8 years, I've finally taken the splash and ordered myself a new PC, well the compoents any way to build myself a desktop this time.
I've just got a couple of questions.
I've got a 60GB SDD and a 1TB HDD. On the SDD I was planning on partitions for Ubuntu Swap Window partition, to run a Virtulisation, not dual boot.
Performance wise, is it best to install / on the SDD and /home on the HDD or /home on the SDD as well and just move music and videos ect to the HDD.
Just to complicate things, when ordering the HDD there was an offer to get a second 1TB HDD for an extra 11, so now I have 2. I was planning to set these up as RAID 1, which I believe I can do via the alternative install.
What would be the best way to then backup / . I guess it must be possible to schedule an image of/ to be copied across to HDD is it?
I did hear that RAID was a bit iffy in ubuntu, but looking about on the net things seem to be better 9.10 → Also the boot disk isn't RAID.
Are there any RAID or SSD issues I should be aware of?
1- I want to encrypt my system drive
2 - I want to make my system drive a RAID 1
3 - I have two 1 T hard drives, but I would like to be able to add two more 1 T hard drives for a total of 4 1T drives in the future. How do I do that?
I am using ubuntu 10, desktop edition. I have not added the OS yet, I am building this weekend.
I was using a Buffalo LinkStation Duo to store pictures and the OS in the unit failed. As far as I know, the data on the two 1 TB drives is fine, and since Buffalo uses a Linux kernel in their LinkStation and the format is xfs, it should be possible to get the data off if I can mount one of the drives on a Linux box. I've put one of the drives into an external USB enclosure and attached it to my Linux system, but I cannot get the drive to mount, probably because it is one element of a Raid 1 array.
Most of what I can find on the Web concerns setting up a new Raid array, not creating an array around a drive that already contains data. I have installed mdadm, and I'm running Mint Linux release 9 (Isadora) on an Intel box. When I run mdadm -D /dev/sdb or sdb6, the device and the partition where the data is located, it reports that the device does not appear to be an md device. I'm not sure what that means. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I've got around 13,000 photos on these disks that have no backup (I figured what could go wrong with mirrored copies?).
I *had* a server with 6 SATA2 drives with CentOS 5.3 on it (I've upgraded over time from 5.1). I had set up (software) RAID1 on /boot for sda1 and sdb1 with sdc1, sdd1, sde1, and sdf1 as hot backups. I created LVM (over RAID5) for /, /var, and /home. I had a drive fail last year (sda).After a fashion, I was able to get it working again with sda removed. I now only have one replacement drive (it will take a week or two to get the others).I went to linux rescue from the CentOS 5.2 DVD and changed sda1 to a Linux (as opposed to Linux RAID) partition. I need to change my fstab to look for /dev/sda1 as boot, but I can't even mount sda1 as /boot. What do I need to do next? View 2 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to set up an IBM Intellistation Z Pro to optionally boot from many OS versions. One of these is Windows XP. Windows XP is currently installed on a RAID 1 device consisting of a pair of 1 GB WD drives. These are SATA drives. The HBA I'm using is a SYBA SATA II card that uses Silicon Image's SIL3124-2 chip. The card has a BIOS and I've set up two 60 GB mirrors for Windows. I boot XP fine from this setup and things run good.
I've downloaded the CentOS 5.2 images and am able to start the installation process. I'm baffled on where to install the OS software on the RAID device. The installation process shows the two 1GB drives as separate drives and there is no acknowledgment of the 60 GB partition I've already created on them for Windows XP. I expected to see only the one logical RAID device and 60 GB of it in use for a NTFS partition. Reluctant to proceed further, I bailed on the install and am asking for advice on how to proceed.
The big question is
1) How can I install CentOS 5.2 on the RAID drive to coexist with a Windows XP installation? My desire is to boot either from this drive.

2) Why does the CentOS partitioning software used for the install not display the logical RAID drive set up through BIOS (I'm assuming that this means it was set up apart from any Windows drivers etc.)? Only the two physical drives are displayed and there is no mention of any partitions in use.
I have this little problem: when I open a folder with images from my network drive, I can't see the previews of the files.If the folder is on the local drive no issues, but with the remote one... no luck.I checked around for a solution, without results.. do you know if there is a solution for this little issue

I reinstalled 9.04 but I don't know how to mount my RAID drive without messing with the data that's already on there. I have the UUID for the RAID but fstab isn't able to find it. I also previously used RAID software but I don't remember which one I used. how to mount my drive so that ubuntu can see it?
