Earlier tonight my computer froze when I was moving some folders on an external hard drive (ntfs) and I had to manually shut down. Now nautilus crashes whenever I try to access the drive, although if I open nautilus as root it works fine.

I don't know why it's happening or what caused it, but just a few minutes ago it occurred that every time I unmount/power down my external hard drive from within the Nautilus browser, Ubuntu freezes and Caps Lock starts blinking, indicative of a kernel panic. It doesn't do this when I Safely Remove the drive from the right-click menu on the drive's desktop icon. Even stranger is that no other external device I've tried causes the panic. It only does this with this particular external hard drive and it's a repeatable error.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? EDIT: To note, I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with the 2.6.32.33 kernel. Not Ubuntu 11.04.

And when I plug it in I can choose: the standard ubuntu kernel is the one on my external, and the original one is listed under other...
I'd like to be able to startup without external hard drive and make the ubuntu on my internal drve the standard.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed libfuse2 and ntfs-3g. Now when I reboot, the drive shows up in fdisk. In Gnome File system, the folder shows up in /media as /media/Storage. I didn't issue the mount command, it went there automatically. In terminal, I can access Storage and read/write to files on it. BUT, if I double-click the folder in Gnome, I get a brief glimpse of all the folders in Storage, then they disappear and the drive unmounts. The desktop icon goes away, and I can't see it when I issue sudo fdisk -l. I can get it back with a reboot. I've tried an entry in /etc/fstab, but that makes no difference. I didn't find anything specific to address this on this forum or after Googling.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI inserted a disc and tried to access it through Dolphin. It shows up in the directory explorer thing as a disc and with the disc name, but it has a little / thing in the bottom corner of the icon, and when I try to access it, it gives me this long error on the bottom of the file area (can't remember what all it said, something about 'harvey' and being unable to find the directory in /etc/fstab). The same thing happened with an external drive, which seemed to work fine before but now has the same problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am having some trouble with usb flash drive lately:when plugging in: all nautilus windows close all icons disappear from the desktop but reappear seconds later after a couple of seconds of high cpu usage I can open a new nautilus windows and the drive is properly mounted.I have apport enabled: once in a while there is apport running and trying to gather a report which cannot be sent because it is an assert failure.. once in a blue moon apport gives me the not-enough-memory error message (screenshot here) but I don't think it should need more than 400MB I had at that moment.dmesg gives this..:

I have a laptop with only 30GB storage and I want to install Lubuntu in virtual box but Lubuntu needs 5GB of storage space which i dont have. Could i use an external 160GB hard drive to act as the hard drive for the virtual machine without affecting the files that are already on the external hard drive

I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.

I have been backing up onto a 60G ext2/3/4 partition on a 1TB external USB hard disk for a year or so now and have built up a few folders of .thunderbird, .mozilla, and other assorted files - using this as my standard "backup system" - but suddenly all the files and folders in this partition seem to have disappeared.
In Gparted and KParted the partition shows up as the correct size with the correct amount of "used space" (= yellow coloured portion), as it does when running offof any CD/standalone OS. And the small bars under the volume names in Dolphin show about the right amount having been "used" too.But however I try to access this partition (or, to be correct LVM I spose:-)) it still always comes up as empty - ie 0 files in it. After months of working just fine.The NTFS partition on the same external USB sdd reads and writes quite OK/normally and also shows the correct amount of "used space" - but even from root I can't see any of the old files in, or read/write to the linux one. It comes up with "Denied"/"Can't Write to.." errors when trying to write anything to it.
I ran a freeware utility called DiskInternals Linux-Recovery from winDoze which, after half an hour, came up with a list showing all the folders and files in the partition. It said that they would be written back onto the hard drive that they were "retrieved" from - but no change happened - still no contents showing when booting up in any linux.

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
Under Ubuntu 11.04, Nautilus isn't seeing my second hard drive (ext3 200GB). ...It's a backup of my home folder that was on the Ubuntu 8.04 primary drive. So how does one go about copying the data from the second hard drive to the primary hard drive then?

But every time I do, the share is not accessible because none of the important permissions (other) can be set because its, well, NTFS in linux. And I know of no way to fix it.Is there an easy way, preferably with Nautilus since the person I am setting this up for isn't a computer expert, to setup this share so thats its accessible and writable by other computers on the network?

I cleared everything off but am trying to see if I can arrange it so that I can back up from linux and access (if need be) from a Windows machine.

I am having problems mounting an iso on my external hard drive. I do not want to move it onto my linux partition because it is 3.6 GB. I have a directory made (/media/iso) that I would like to mount it in, but if that doesn't work then I don't care where it goes. After I mount it I want to be able to run it using Wine, but that will come later. For now I just need to get it mounted. And, of course, I am fairly new to linux/ubuntu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 250GB external hard drive that I want to format to ext4. It will be used to store back ups of my documents, music and pictures. I tried booting the Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD (amd64) and using gparted to delete the partitions that where on the hard drive leaving only unallocated space, then creating one new partition that was ext4. I clicked apply and after a short time it said all operations completed successfully.
Now the problem is it won't let me transfer any documents onto the hard drive, or even create a folder or file. If I go into the properties of the hard drive, under the permissions tab it says I am not the owner...?
I just bought WD External Hard drive for my laptop and found out that there is no support for Linux. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and need advice on installation.

I have 2 external drives that my UBUNTU 9.10 doesn't recognize, although I can see them perfectly in Win XP.I was using them in Ubuntu until 2 weeks ago, when this problem started and I can't find a way to see/mount them again. Its the first time I try to mount a hard drive (external) since the upgrade to 10.04. Do I have to download some packages via synaptic? If not, what do I have to do?

I have an external hard drive which connects to a usb port. until recently i could unmount it by right clicking on the desktop icon and selecting unmount. now when i try that it tells me that i can't because the device is not in fstab and i am not the root. i checked mtab and it had this line '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' i changed that to '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' thinking that would fix it, but it didn't. i unmounted using 'sudo umount /media/usb0' and restarted my computer and now the line in mtab reads '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 vfat rw,noexec,nodev,sync,noatime,nodiratime 0 0' and i still can't unmount without using the sudo umount command. i also tried adding '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' to fstab and that didn't help
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to backup my documents, using Fwbackups, on an external hard drive (a LaCie Ethernet Disk mini). But I can't seem to access that drive from FWbackups. As a first test, I tried a One-time backup (to backup some of my personal folders).Using Nautilus file manager, I access the external hard drive simply by going to Network, then to "Edmini FTP" or to "EDmini SMB". But when I need to pick a destination folder in Fwbackups, I can't seem to find the external hard drive. I tried "local folder", then Browse, but Network doesn't appear.

I am setting up a Linux laptop for my parents, and want to also create some backup scripts to allow them to easily back up to an external hard drive. [And for them to be able to use it, it has to be super simple.]
For security purposes (should the external drive ever get lost or stolen), I want to encrypt the entire device using TrueCrypt. That means my scripts will have to use TrueCrypt to mount the backup volume using the device name. [Right?]
Now to the actual question(s): 1) Is there a way to ensure that an external hard drive will ALWAYS be assigned the same device name when plugged in? [That would be the simplest solution for me.]
2) Alternatively, is there a way (using bash scripting) to "find" the device name of a particular external hard drive, even if it might not be known in advance.
