Under Ubuntu 11.04, Nautilus isn't seeing my second hard drive (ext3 200GB). ...It's a backup of my home folder that was on the Ubuntu 8.04 primary drive. So how does one go about copying the data from the second hard drive to the primary hard drive then?

I have several sata hard drives that I keep files on. They are all formatted ext3. I have a blacx sata to usb dock on my ubuntu computer that I use to go through files and back up and such. I have a usb to sata dock on the windows 7 machine.
When I plug in the hard drive Windows says that it has to be formatted and the drive is "raw"
I can check the drive in ubuntu and everything is right
I tried installing ext2fsd and it sees the drive but wont let me select any file type or mount it. I think because its going through the usb port.
So how can I make windows 7 see and be able to access an ext3 formatted drive thats plugged into the usb port?
I have a 160Gig and a 40 Gig drive.I would like to install the system on the 160 Gig, and use the 40 Gig drive as a storage for backups or whatever.It appears in the installation process that I am required to use a mount point, which would then turn the drive over to the root system, which would not allow it to be totally available to me.I just want to format it to ext3 filing system.Coffeecat, if you are out there and see this, strange things are happening to the 40 Gig drive - it says it is using 2 gig, but it is totally empty of all system files, hidden files, trash, etc. and it is being imaged in the media folder in root. I believe I have messed this install up to the point of no return and think I should go ahead and start over.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi needed to change my external hard drive's file system from ext3 to fat32, to use it in windows, which i did the simple way: i shrunk the ext3 partition, made a fat32 partition, copied the files over, removed the ext3 and made the fat32 bigger. unfortunately, while gparted was making the partition larger, my computer shut down. i lost all my files and the partition messed up immediately. i made a new fat32 partition, after deleting the old one, but noticed that gparted was showing 100 gigs already in use (???). so now i have a 300 gb hard drive with only 200 gb i can use; i ran df to make sure gparted wasn't messing up, but indeed it shows the partition as being only 200 gigs in size. i haven't tried making any other kind of partition yet, such as ext3, for fear of losing my files again, and because it wouldn't be permanent anyway, because i need those files in windows and stupid microsoft won't make their OS ext3 compatible.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't know why it's happening or what caused it, but just a few minutes ago it occurred that every time I unmount/power down my external hard drive from within the Nautilus browser, Ubuntu freezes and Caps Lock starts blinking, indicative of a kernel panic. It doesn't do this when I Safely Remove the drive from the right-click menu on the drive's desktop icon. Even stranger is that no other external device I've tried causes the panic. It only does this with this particular external hard drive and it's a repeatable error.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? EDIT: To note, I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with the 2.6.32.33 kernel. Not Ubuntu 11.04.
Earlier tonight my computer froze when I was moving some folders on an external hard drive (ntfs) and I had to manually shut down. Now nautilus crashes whenever I try to access the drive, although if I open nautilus as root it works fine.

It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
I have an external drive which is formatted for Linux (ext3) and want to re-format it to use it under windows. I have no data on the disk that I need, just want to re-format so I can use it for a backup for my windows7 laptop.

Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

In windows, including dos.h and bios.h header files in program of c language I can send interrupt to bios and access most of the devices like parallel port, hard disks etc. But problem is that there is no bios.h and dos.h files in gcc. Now how can I access my hard drive using c program. How can I call int13h interrupt in linux or there is any other function in the linux to access the hard disk. In fact I want to access sectors of my hard disk using c language program. How can I do it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was running ubuntu as a live cd and I wanted to format my pen drive into an ext3 filesystem. I put in sudo mkfs /dev/sda1, but know im thinking that sda1 was my HDD!! I removed the cd from my computer, and it wont boot up into windows anymore!The only thing that is giving me hope is that the mkfs took about 1 min to format whatever it was formatting (my pen drive or my hdd!!) and my hdd is 500gb big. Is there anyway that I could have accidentaly formatted my HDD?

I would like to keep this drive clean, is there any way to stop the directory from being made? I'm getting annoyed having to rm -r it every time I delete something.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I upgraded my hard drive and went with a clean Lucid install. But now I want to get files off my old drive. When I re-hooked it back up (now 2 drives in the system), ubuntu refuses to boot. It kind of boots then just hangs. Never gets to the desktop, and the HD lite on my case is constantly flickering (what could it be doing??)
I have it set up correctly in my BIOS so that the new drive is the boot drive, not the old one. The only difference is that the new drive is sata and the old drive is old school pata (ide). I even tried pulling out the old pata drive and hooking it up to a USB adapter I have. Looking at it in the Disk Manager, it shows it as unformatted, and old faithful GParted doesn't even see it!
Now get this: I pulled out my new sata and put back in the old ide drive and guess what, now it wont boot! Grub (probably MBR) is screwed up also! Any ideas how I can read the data from that old drive? Ether by getting my new lucid install to boot with the old drive as a slave in the system, or by hooking it up externally using USB?
I have bought a ICYBOX IB-NAS4220-B a while ago and kept getting issues with it (going down and not restarting, very slow etc). 2 weeks ago one more issue arose and I couldn't restart or reconnect to the box so decided to take the disks out and recover my data to a 5BIG Lacie. The IcyBox uses a software RAID1 and format drives in EXT3. Being a Linux system I thought I could easily recover data from an Ubuntu box so installed the latest version as CD boot wouldn't give me satisfactory results. I am now stuck with both 1TB drive plugged into my Ubuntu machine and can't seem to be able to mount the drives.

I want to unmount the current /home from sda7 and mount it to sdb1
I had a look at system -> drives management but just was able to mount the secondary drive sdb1 as "DataDrive"
I had a look at /etc/fstab. This doesn't show the recently mounted sda7 "DataDrive"
So now I'm somewhat lost on how to achieve the goal

Scenario 1. Copy all contents of /home to the new drive and then switch the /home mount point
Scenario 2. Switch the mount point of /home from sda7 to sdb1 and cp the contents afterwards

I'm trying to format a 500 GB external drive with gparted in ubuntu 10.10 (I searched & didn't see this issue in the forum). I set up and formatted two partitions, one for fat32, and the other with ext3, which appears to format ok, but I can't use it. Both partitions show up and appear to mount, but the ext3 partition won't accept activity (make new folder, copy in files), while the fat32 partition works fine. Both partitions show up ok when I query in terminal "sudo fdisk -l"
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a 500gb hard drive that I wanted to use on my Ubuntu system as a media storage drive. The drive originally had two partitions on it,one was a Dell Recovery partition and the other was a Windows Vista partition. Using the Palimpsest Drive Utility that comes with Ubuntu, I deleted both partitions,created a Ext3 partition using 100% of the space and copied my data to the drive. After I finally got fstab to load the drive, I found another problem. First of all, when Grub loads, two options it offers are:
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc1
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc3
Aside from that, 100% of the drive is not being used by the Ext3 partition.It is showing 434.6gb available on the drive. Fdisk is not showing any other partitions on this drive, so A) why are the Windows loader options showing up under Grub and B) why do I not have 500gb available?Here is a copy of the output fdisk -l:

I have two USB drives, one with ext3, and the other w/vfat. On my new Fedora 12 installation, GNOME properly automounts the vfat drive on insertion. However, it applies a wrong command to mount the ext3 one. The end result is that the ext3 drive appears in /etc/mtab but, unlike vfat, is inaccessible to non-power user.
The mtab is: /dev/sdb1 /media/918fb656-8efc-43b5-bdfd-0bd8004deeba ext3 rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /media/49C6-1901 vfat rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit,uid=500,gid=500,sho rtname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,flush 0 0
Somehow GNOME misses the uid=500,gid=500,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1, flush portion of the mount command when mounting the ext3 drive.
I am trying to install a harddisk, which is already formatted as ext3, into my Qnap NAS box. The web interface of the NAS box shows, that the harddrive has been detected, but I am not able to mount any of its partitions.This is the output from fdisk -l:

I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.

I have a flash drive that I use to sync my work- and home-computers. Rsync has occasional issues syncing between FAT32 (which I use on my flash drive b/c it's universal) and EXT3.
I decided to create an EXT3 partition on the flash drive in an attempt to alleviate the rsync woes. My problem is that when I create the partition using GParted, Ubuntu auto-mounts it with Root as the owner. I had GParted check the drive, and it found no errors to repair.
One other weird thing is that the EXT3 partition shows 84.7MB being used immediately after creating the new partition.
The FAT32 partition mounts fine, is read/write, and only shows 4KB used after the new partition scheme.
I tried doing new partitions a number of times, with EXT2, EXT3, and EXT4 just to see if that mysteriously made a difference. Each time that partition would mount w/ Root as owner.
is there a way of sharing an ext3/ext4 formatted partition on an external USB drive between different users (uids) on different Linux machines without creating a group for this purpose, setting the group ownership of the partition to this group and adding each respective user to the group on every machine?This would mean that I need to have root privileges on every machine... which I may not have in some cases.I'm using the partition to store the code I'm developing on Linux and I would like the option to be safe... if possible.I could use a vfat partition but then I have no control of the rw rights + I cannot develop directly in the dir: I would always have to tar.gz the directory, extract, work, tar.gz, copy to the external drive.
