Hardware :: Recover Data From Raid 1 Drive?

I was using a Buffalo LinkStation Duo to store pictures and the OS in the unit failed. As far as I know, the data on the two 1 TB drives is fine, and since Buffalo uses a Linux kernel in their LinkStation and the format is xfs, it should be possible to get the data off if I can mount one of the drives on a Linux box. I've put one of the drives into an external USB enclosure and attached it to my Linux system, but I cannot get the drive to mount, probably because it is one element of a Raid 1 array.
Most of what I can find on the Web concerns setting up a new Raid array, not creating an array around a drive that already contains data. I have installed mdadm, and I'm running Mint Linux release 9 (Isadora) on an Intel box. When I run mdadm -D /dev/sdb or sdb6, the device and the partition where the data is located, it reports that the device does not appear to be an md device. I'm not sure what that means. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I've got around 13,000 photos on these disks that have no backup (I figured what could go wrong with mirrored copies?).

My friend has a DELL DIMENSION 9150 computer with 2 harddisk (250 GB each) in RAID 0 (fake raid) with Windows XP installed. There are a lot of documents and pictures installed - and no backup ever done! I have found some pages regarding recovery data from RAID 0 () but My friend have bought 2 new harddisks(WESTERN DIGITAL 2500AAJS) which is almost the same as the ones inside.
My plan:
1. copy each harddisk
2. replace original HDDs with my copies
3. try to recover
4. change RAID 0 to normal HDD in BIOS
5. reinstall Windows XP
I have some LINUX distros (DSL, SystemRescCD, UltimateBootCD on Live-CD and UBUNTU installed on one other computer) which I can use. I read about "dmraid" and then try to mounting the RAID in a UBUNTU live-CD version...

In a nutshell, our RAID 1 array was rendered broken and we were advised that core lib files were missing and the OS needed to be reloaded... a quote from our server host:"The OS is not healthy.This server will need a reinstall.
Libs are missing." This was after having replaced what we though was a faulty /dev/sdb. So they reloaded the OS (Debian 5.0.2 x86_64) on 2 FRESH drives, and installed the old /dev/sda as /dev/sdc once the reload was completed. Here's the output of /etc/fstab on the fresh install so we know what we're working with:

The one problem I see myself running into is /dev/md1 and /dev/md2 are currently in use by the new system, so I cannot mount it there. I should also note, reloading the OS is a viable option if needed as we haven't started configuring the server yet. So if we need to reinstall the OS and assign the NEW RAID arrays to something other than /dev/md1 and /dev/md2 then we can do that.

The situation: computer based on Asus P6T motherboard. Two RAIDS:
- 'boot', on motherboard built-in RAID controller (CentOS 5.5 installed on this RAID)
- 'data' on 3dware RAID card
At one moment a CPU fan fails and the system halts. After the fan is replaced, BIOS informs it's reset and all the inner controller data are forgotten. After I switch it to 'RAID' mode, it remembers it was a mirror raid (RAID 1) installed, but the file system on it is completely trashed.
The 'data' RAID run by external controller isn't affected by the system failure. Three questions:
- is it worth trying to install OS on the rebuilt 'boot' RAID once again? Looks like if BIOS settings are lost for some reason, there's chance of completely losing RAID data
- has someone encountered similar problem with built-in RAID nd was it possible to recover data?
- will the software RAID be worth creating instead of using hardware RAID to replace the 'boot' drive?

I have a laptop with Fedora 12 on it and I accidentally did an dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda (since then I learned to think before I type)
anyway, I stopped it in time (I hope), it only zeroed first 60 MB. So, it killed partition table and boot partition. What I need is home partition, and it should be untouched. home is on a LVM device (fedora default install settings), and I tried testdisk (supposedly handles LVM) but it found only one partition (I guess it's a LVM physical device, as there should be 3 partitions, /, /home and swap) and said it's not recoverable.
Is there a way to get access to files on that partition (partition itself, including file table should be untouched). Partition contains various data (video, audio, and text) I need back (and it's my data, not backed up, and not something I can redownload). Is there any software that can help me with this, and if not, is it theoretically doable (I believe it should be, as the partition itself is not damaged, so it should be possible to read file names and link them with data on disk, am I right)? what is a good way to image the disk, so I can reinstall the laptop while trying to rescue data from image?

I have a 1Tb Western Digital Network drive. I was showing someone the photos on this on their XP computer and noticed that each file also had a capitalized version beside. I assumed this was a copying mistake and highlighted all the capitalized copies and deleted them. To my horror all files have vansihed. The next horror came in that XP apparently doesn't move deleted files to the recycle bin it just deletes them. I rapidly went back to my ubuntu machine and mounted the network drive. However none of my normal recovery file methods work on network drives. PhotoRec doesn't list the drive. and sudo ddrescue -r 3 ~/.gvfs/SFTP for [myname] on [address]/[path] ~/LOGFILE tells me permission is denied.

Using F12 with a LVM Volume, Single disk with OS on and boot partition. The OS HDD is getting i/o errors, but will still boot to the login screen. I've removed the HDD and connected it to a Fedora Live OS on my laptop, connected the HDD and it registers as :

And it tried to mount /dev/sdd2 to view and see if I can recover some files.

missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Any way to mount the partition to allow me to try and get some data back, or if trying to do a full backup of the drive you can get it to ignore i/o errors.

I just want one last attempt at seeing if there's a solution. My Dell Studio 15 laptop HDD that runs Vista failed, I booted Ubuntu from a CD knowing that I should be able to recover my data.
However, Ubuntu can't find my HDD, it's not listed and "fdisk -l" doesn't result in anything. The BIOS seems to know that the HDD is there though.

I've been trying to discover how can I recover data from a hard drive that as been previously configured with LVM, although not encrypted,but I have been having mixed results. I've been using LVM more and more lately to configure hard drives and my greatest fear is to have a motherboard fail on me and get locked out of the contents.

I have 3 drives in my computer. I installed Fedora 11 on my two biggest one, with the LVM treating them as one single drive. I attempted to install XP on my last drive. As I was installing, I selected my third drive (I'm 100% sure it is the correct drive as it is an 80gb whilst the others are 120 and 200 respectively) and told it to delete the partition on that drive and format. After I did that, it started to format, starting with my 120! I'm fairly sure that it was merely a quick format, as it only took 5-10 seconds for it to format, and that my data is still there. Is there any way to recover my "lost" data, or did I just really screw myself over?

Last night I made the mistake of formatting my media drive. Before the format, it was ext4. then I formatted it to ext4 again because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing(this mistake only gets made once). Now im looking for away to recover any/all of my data. The drive in question is 1tb. I have not written any new files to this drive.

I am using software RAID in Ubuntu Server Edition 9.10 to mirror(RAID1) two 1TB harddrives. These are used for data storage and websites.I also have a 80GB harddrive for the operatigsystem. This drive has no backup or RAID at all. Should this drive crash and the system therefore to become no longer bootable, will I be able to recover the data the 1TB drives or should I backup the 80GB drive as well?

I currently have a 1.5TB sata drive connected to my system, with data already on it. In the next few days I am planning to use mdadm to create a raid5 array with another 2 1.5TB drives along with the one I already have. Is it possible to create the raid without losing the data on my current hard drive? Obviously it will be backed up before hand just in case, but it would be nice not to have to restore nearly a TB of data after raid'ing the drives.

I am trying to create a RAID data drive for my system but I am having setting it up since I am a total linux noob.
The system has 3 physical HDD-s:
1. 320 GB (has functional Ubuntu 9.10 installation) attached to a PCI SATA card
2. 2TB on motherboard
3. 2TB on PCI SATA card
I want to create a software RAID1 of disks 2 and 3. So far I have used the Palimpsest Disk Utility:
- Created a GUID Partition table on both disks (2, 3)
- Used File -> New -> Software Array, made sure both my drives were included
- Once Palimpsest listed the RAID Drive as a Software RAID Array, I told it to create Ext3 filesystem on it
Well.. at least thats what I thought I did. At this point I have been able to mount the RAID drive and put files on it. However when I look at its information in Palimpsest, I am told that the drive is not partitioned. Both RAId components /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdc1 are reported to be in Sync, but the RAID Drive's own state is 'Running, Resyncing @ 45%' (and lowly growing).
My questions are: Is this a normal setup or did I do something incorrectly? Why is the drive reporting to have no partition? And howcome I can use it if it does not have a partition? I have found the command line based configurations to be a tad too confusing to follow, so I have tried to stick to graphical tools - is this a hopeless cause in Ubuntu or is it possible to achieve what I want to do without command line? I will list some info on my disks below - perhaps this offers more insight to those of you more familiar with Linux.

I had to recently reinstall ubuntu because 10.04 started acting up on me. I reinstalled 9.04 but I don't know how to mount my RAID drive without messing with the data that's already on there. I have the UUID for the RAID but fstab isn't able to find it. I also previously used RAID software but I don't remember which one I used. how to mount my drive so that ubuntu can see it?

I have never preformed a rebuild of an RAID array. I am collecting resources, which details how to build an RAID 5 array when one drive has failed. Does the BIOS on the RAID controller card start to rebuild the data on the new drive once it is installed?

how to set up a boot partition on the first hard drive separate from two RAID 5 configurations on a Supermicro server with 1-750GB hard drive for the boot partition, and 15-1TB hard drives for data. The 15 hard drives are split into two RAID 5 configurations (7 -TB drives and 8 1-TB drives). I will be installing CentOS 5.2, and the 15 Terabytes of data will store data, and the 750GB hard drive(on port 0) will only have the 100MB boot file. I am using 3ware BIOS Manager to configure the first array of 7 hard drives, and the second array of 8 hard drives (1 drive with boot information will not be included in the array).
to recap, picture this: I want to load CentOS on this server. /dev/sda1 (on the bottom left drive) needs to house the boot partition set for 100MB. The remaining 7 drives (the left half, not counting the boot drive) need to be set up as a RAID 5 array. The eight drives on the right (right half) also need to be setup as a RAID 5 array. After I configure this in BIOS, I run the CentOS setup disk in graphical mode. I get to the portion after the Language and keyboard setup where it says "Installation requires partitioning of your hard drive. By default, a partitoning layout is chosen which is reasonable for most users. You can either choose to use this or create your own. Select the drive(s) to use for this installation". The drives listed are:
"sda 5721980 MB AMCC 9650-SE-8LP DISK"
"sdb 1020 MB AMCC 9650-SE-8LP DISK"
"sdc 714218 MB AMCC 9650-SE-8LP DISK"

When I choose "Remove Linux partitions on the selected drives and create default layout." or any other option, I get different errors. I notice when configuring via text mode I get better options to install. I can't install the boot drive separate from the two RAID configurations?

Right now I have a 320GB system drive and 3TB data drive. I want to add two more 3TB drives and do a software RAID5 3x3TB. Is that possible without losing the data that is already on the data drive?Just want to make sure before I bought the 2 two drives. Not looking for instructions on how to do it,but if you want to include some that would be great too Just making sure it will work.

I recently installed Fedora 12 on a system with 3 HDs, using the first hard drive for root and swap, and the other two as a RAID 1 device mounted to the folder /data. This was all set up while installing from CD. /data appeared as a folder under Filesystem in the GUI
After trashing the OS, I reinstalled from CD. I formatted only sda to recreate the OS; sdb1, sdc1, and RAID MD0 were not changed during the reinstall. When the newly built system is started up, RAID MD0 does not appear when I run fdisk -l. It does show up in the GUI when I open "Computer" as RAID-1 Drive. When I open it and authenticate as root, it then appears as RAID-1 Drive 320 GB Filesystem. I can open that and authenticate as root again to access the files that were on the initial RAID 1 device when I reinstalled. At this point MD0 is listed when fdisk -l is run, with the message "Disk /dev/md0 doesn't contain a valid partition table"I am able to mount the opened RAID-1 device to a folder, but each time I reboot the system I have to open and authenticate the RAID device twice to access the files in it. Is there a way to configure the OS to recognize this RAID 1 device as it did before I reinstalled? My goal is to recreate the RAID device without having to move the files on it to another drive.

I had a raid 5 + lvm 2 array and lost a disk. While it was recovering the array, the power was down and recovery stopped. When I recovered the power and start the machine the array was unable to start, it was degraded and the states were different between disks. Every disk watched the array in a different way. I put you the states:

The first part in /dev/sdc1 is the same for all the devices, I just post you the states. Another thing is tha all the devices say that there is no superblock It seems that 3 disks are "active sync" but the states of the others doesn't match between them. And /dev/sdd1 is spare, the disk I added manually at first to start the recovery process.

I HAD a fedora 11 server with md RAID 1 across two 1TB SATA drives. The md0 space was set up to be an LVM PV and the single LVM VG was carved up into 5 or 6 LVs. The MB on this system died and I wound up buying a new one.
Now I want to recover the data from the RAID1 setup on the new server. However, when I attach the two 1TB drives to a new fedora 13 setup, mdadm is only able to find one of the two drives. The partition on the second drive shows "busy" during an mdadm -A -s -v to scan for md volumes.
Well, one drive should be enough since this is RAID1, right? Well, when I do a pvscan -v, the other drive shows up as a "NEW" pv not allocated to a VG. In addition, vgscan does print "Invalid metadata header checksum" when it runs but it doesn't point at any particular PV. I'm afraid to go any further with LVM since I can't afford to lose the data on this system. It is backed up offsite, but the restore will take several days and I can't afford to be down that long.
Are there any tools or techniques where I can dig deeper into what each drive, in the RAID1 pair, has right and wrong with it and pick one that I can force into a usable VG so that I can recover the data?

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 on my EEE-PC for most of my thesis research, but I left it running a python script overnight and now I can't get it to login. I was running low on disk-space, and I think the problem is that the script generated a lot of text files and used up all of the available hard drive space.
Now, whenever I try to boot the machine, it reaches the user-select/login screen, but logging in just causes it to go black for a second before returning to the login screen. I have Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB, and Ubuntu Rescue Remix on another, and both allow me to boot up my machine, but I can't see my hard-drive - neither in /mnt/ nor in /media/ - in order to copy my thesis files or to delete some excess text files to free up some hard-drive space.

I have a DVD-R labeled 16x that has been written by me in several sessions (but perhaps only one), always with an iso9660 fs, using a DVD writer whose data are these:
Vendor_info : 'LITE-ON '
Identifikation : 'DVDRW LH-20A1H '
Revision : 'LL0D'
Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM.
kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU (Slackware 12.0).
In spite of the last line, the drive is DVD+R compliant too. This is the only DVD drive I have and it seems unable to read that medium. Other discs, it reads them well. Before kissing the disc good bye, I would like to try all possible procedures at my disposal. The disc, by visual inspection, seems to be in a pristine condition. When I insert it, the drive remains with the led turned on for about one minute. I tried 'cdrecord -setdropts driveropts=singlesession dev=x,x,x' to switch the drive to single session mode but with no results. I have many tools in the cdrtools package:

Because a customer of mine is inefficient in doing backups I have to do a recovery if possible. Drive had vista on it and was really bug infested to point of a reload. I reloaded vista from scratch and then my customer says "Oh, I guess I forgot to back those files up...".Is it possible to recover some files even though vista was reloaded? I suppose the basic answer is "As long as they havent been overwritten yet".
Im running testdisk and its made a ton of directories with files in them that I assume it has recovered. Im going to have to write a script I guess to grab the files as there are about 600 directories!I guess what Im asking is 1. What are my chances of success? 2. Has anyone ever recovered files from a vista re-install? 3. Is testdisk the best way of going about it (with photorec).
