Debian :: Disc Install Dial Up - Web & DNS Server?

Apr 16, 2011

This is my first time to use Debian. I ordered the discs from LinuxCD - Debian 5.0.7. I am at the install point of Software Selection packages and I don't want to install unnecessary ones. Desktop environment and Standard system are ticked by default. I am installing to a desktop machine. I don't think I need Web server and going to Apache's FAQ still didn't answer my question whether I need it or not. I am not sure about DNS server, either. At this point, the only one I am sure I need is the Printer server. I found one page that loosely describes these software collections, but I am still unsure. Since most people do not use dial up these days it isn't taken into account of the description.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Can't Find Grub Without Disc / Boot From Hard Disc

Jan 1, 2011

I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.

I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.

sda1 - swap
sda2 - /
sda3 - /home

There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?

Server :: Stopping Automatic Disc Check In Debian?

Sep 7, 2010

Whenever my debian based server is rebooted 35 times it does an automatic disc check. When it does this and completes the disc check it doesn't properly establish network comms and I can't get in using SSH and I can't even ping the server. If I reboot again, it operates as normal but the problem is that the server is remote to me and I need to travel to the site when this occurs.

Debian Installation :: Won't Boot Install Disc

Jul 3, 2011

I am trying to install debian on a compaq presario 6000. When I try to boot off of the first dvd it just won't do anyting most of the time; one flat line keeps blinking. The first time that I booted it, there was that line that starts with isolinux, but that was only there the first time. now nothing shows up.That first time, I got several error messages: EDD: error 8000 reading sector 1360652 and the same thing 5 times over with different numbers at the end. Do these mean that the disc is corrupt in some way, or that the dvd reader is broken or something else?

Debian :: Best Backup Solution For Dial-up Users

Jun 22, 2011

i'm searching for an encrypted backup solution for dial-up users. I'm already using duply (duplicity), but it's not really the right software for a large backup and a slow connection. Every x month a new full backup is needed, and that's really slow.Is there better system for that? A file based encrypted system would be nice, so it's not needed to reupload every large file.

OpenSUSE Network :: Kinternet - No Name Server Found W/ Dial-up?

Mar 17, 2009

I'm new to openSUSE and yesterday I managed to multi-boot successfully with version 11.1 for 64 bit processor (live cd).I have a MultiTech multimodem-usb (MT5634ZBA-USB)and have it running fine in two other LINUX distros using KPPP as well as wvdial. To try and get it working in SUSE, I went to YaST administrative tools for network devices (I think that was section, as I have to recall from memory or write it down since I can't connect from openSUSE, so bear with me) and chose modem and it detected the modem correctly as ttyACM0. My isp uses a dynamic address, and that is what is ticked in ISP information. Default Route is also ticked, though I'm unsure what that setting is for. I enter the phone number, the authorization name (ex. me@myispdotnet) and pretty much choose the default settings for the rest of the modem and provider set up. It shows kernel interface: modem 0. I let YaST finish configuring it, and I see kinternet icon and click on it and it dials up successfully, all lights on my modem are lit up, the icon plug is joined, and I can see it try to ping but fails (I can't surf in konqueror or firefox). When I look at kinternet log, it states name server failureno name server found in /etc/resolv.confI know how to use wvdial so I tried that alternative dial up tool and it also says name server not found.

I tried adding the SUSE nameservers in the network device set up GUI as it has a place to add two nameservers, but when I did that, the modem wouldn't dial out. When I logged back into openSUSE, there was no kinternet icon in the bottom toolbar, so I clicked on kinternet under applications, and it said:Error KinternetConnection to local and remote server refused. Maybe your smppd is not running or you are not a member of group dial out.I went to YaST>system services and smppd enabled yes. I also checked user settings and I am a member of group for dialout. That is the only group I am a member of as I didn't want to change anything there, not yet. I tried reconfiguring my modem again to see if I could get kinternet up and running, but it wouldn't show up in the bottom bar and the error above would show whenever I clicked on kinternet under applications.

The only how to I found was this, but I don't know how to edit a read-only file in openSUSE. I'm familair with kdesu and gksu, but not using vi to edit a read only I have been spending hours on this and getting no where. If kppp worked, I'd install it and use it, but I need a connection first to get it. But I guess if wvdial doesn't work, then kppp won't either until the nameserver issue is resolved.Should I edit the resolv.conf file and add the nameservers manually? Again, I'm not sure how to do this as root in openSUSE.

So my windows drive is now first, then my Ubuntu drive second. Its been a while so I'm wondering how involved / what would be the steps to get grub2 to chainload into windows7 (in my head I want to say I'm going to boot into the live cd, mount the windows disc and reinstall the loader to the windows drive since its the first disc in the chain?)

Debian Configuration :: Install A Multi-core System And Configure It To Run Several VMs, One Each For A Firewall, A Caching Proxy Server, A Mail Server, A Web Server?

Jan 25, 2011

I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible. My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet. The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.

In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).

Debian :: Installing Win7 On Second Hard Disc

Aug 15, 2009

I have two sata HDs. One of these has Debian an Winxp installed. Grub is the bootloader. Grub resides in MBR (on the same disk). Now that I've added that second disk, I would like to test win7 on it. What I would like to do is to be able to choose -at boot time (maybe in bios setup)- between booting from the disk containing win7 or from the disk containing Grub with winxp and Debian. I thought that when installing win7 it would let me choose the disk where to install it and here is where the problem arises.

Win7 installer detects my partitions and lists them as if they were not on different disks. What would happen if I choose to install win7 on the partition I want to (second disk, partition1)? Will win7 create a new bootloader? Now I am a little confused and don't want to keep on going not being sure the results are what I expected. What steps should I follow to install win7 on the second hard disc not affecting the disc with winxp, debian and grub letting me choose between these two Operating Systems?
