OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Can't Find Grub Without Disc / Boot From Hard Disc
Jan 1, 2011I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.
sda1 - swap
sda2 - /
sda3 - /home
There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?
Debian Installation :: Won't Boot Install Disc
Jul 3, 2011I am trying to install debian on a compaq presario 6000. When I try to boot off of the first dvd it just won't do anyting most of the time; one flat line keeps blinking. The first time that I booted it, there was that line that starts with isolinux, but that was only there the first time. now nothing shows up.That first time, I got several error messages: EDD: error 8000 reading sector 1360652 and the same thing 5 times over with different numbers at the end. Do these mean that the disc is corrupt in some way, or that the dvd reader is broken or something else?

May 9, 2010After having installed Ubuntu several days after its release, I have enjoyed the OS entirely except for one issue: zebra stripe crashes. When my desktop (stats are in my signature) is left idle, occasionally it will begin flashing from the blank navy blue screen (the screen saver when no screen saver is set) to zebra stripes which can be seen at the top right corner of the screen. When I attempt to move the mouse or even attempt to do remotely anything, the stripes and blank screen continue flashing regardless. I end up having to terminate my session by holding down the power button. I have installed all updates to date. How can this be stopped?

Jan 29, 2010So I have a Zebra S4M label printer that I have managed to get mostly working under CUPS. To make that work, I have the printer upgraded with the latest firmware, CUPS 1.4.1 with its AppArmor profile disabled and the Zebra EPL/ZPL ppd file that's floating about the internet loaded into cups. The printer is connected via USB to the computer, and is set up in cups using ZPL. The computer acts as a print server for other computers, and everything seems to work ok, with one exception. When the printer runs out of paper or runs out of ink ribbon, the printer stops and displays an error on screen, but CUPS never stops. It keeps taking jobs, sends them to the printer and reports that everything is A-OK. It appears at a certain point, the printer's memory gets full and then CUPS sort of hangs.
But it still doesn't display and errors or stop the quque, it just starts this weird behavior where it eats jobs or combines them into one giant job that it just sits on. What I need is for CUPS to know that the printer is out of paper or ribbon and pause the queue until the error status is clear. I know that this printer is communicating its status in some way, as when it's connected to a windows machine, the print queue stops when the paper runs out. How to get CUPS to recognize the printer status so that I'm not losing jobs? I've tried digging through the debug logs but there doesn't seems to be much help there. I do notice that from time to time CUPS says it's discarding "unused printer status changed" and "unused job progress" events but other than that, nothing I see of interest.

Aug 5, 2010I have been having a problem with my 11.1 recently, in that it gets stuck at a point in the boot process that tells me "INIT cannot execute /bin/sh" then it says "INIT: id 1 is respawning too fast please wait 5 minutes" and tells me there are no more preocesses in this runlevel and repeats this no matter how long I wait. Since I couldnt find any information on fixing that, I decided to just upgrade to 11.3 with a boot disc. Now my computer wont recognize the disc to boot from it and still gets stuck at the same screen.

Ubuntu :: Live USB Disc Won't Boot / Why Is So?
Jul 5, 2011I have downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS iso from the Ubuntu website and created a Live USB disc with it.
I test this USB disc by booting from it on my desktop machine. It works fine. It even reinstalls Ubuntu on a test partition successfully.
I then attempt to use this Live USB disc to boot up my netbook. I receive the initial boot menu, and I can choose to either 'try with no changes' or 'install'. Either way, Ubuntu fails to boot, and hangs on the purple pre-desktop Ubuntu splash-screen for over half an hour with no change.
So I try re-creating the Live USB disc with both the Universal USB Installer and Unetbootin. The Live USB disc still fails to boot my netbook with exactly the same result. If I press the ESC key on the netbook whilst the screen has hung at this stage, I see the message code...

Jan 27, 2010I've installed Kubuntu (9.10 I think) on my Mac Mini 3.1 . So I have an OS X partition and an Kubuntu partition.I got the standard no bootable device message.I cannot boot into OS X (I dont want to get into OSX anyway) or Kubuntu.I booted a rEFIt disc and synced the GPT and partition table.Then I booted onto a Kubuntu live cd to re-install grub into the Kubuntu partition. I re-installed it and tried rebooting. I got the grub menu, but must have missed a setting because it was the grub prompty. So I reboot to try to find the values to put into the prompt (kernel location, initrd location). But when I try to boot into the Kubuntu live cd it freezes just after ISOLINUX appears (only the top line for ISOLINUX shows up).
I tried going back into rEFIt, but it tells me the GPT and MBR are synced and it won't do anything.If I load rEFIt and select linux, it loads to saying no bootable device -- insert boot disk....If I load rEFIt and select the partition tool it tells me they are already synced, if I select Linux after doing that it will freeze with the tux icon in the middle of the screen.It is obvious I need to do the next step which is install Grub, but I can't boot off any live cds! I have tried Kubuntu, System rescue cd, gparted live cd, os x install cd, an osx corialis boot cd I made, an older Kubuntu CD. They all freeze just after ISO Linux starts up or the OS X ones give me a do not enter sign.

The top two inches are the way it should be but the rest is white, and I can't see anything. Is there some setting on my comp I need to adjust or did I just get a bad disc? I did the install from the USB stick, selecting the option to use the whole drive.
When the install finished I was prompted to restart. I removed the USB stick and did so. The machine rebooted... and nothing. Just a flashing cursor top left of a black screen.
I've booted the USB stick version and looked at the hard drive. Stuff has been installed sure enough, but it will not boot.
Machine is Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. Running Ubuntu from USB stick has been smooth as silk with no issues.
I'm not technically minded, so I'm afraid that any assistance (for which I would be eternally grateful) may need to be n00b-style dumbed-down.

I realized the extreme size difference with Ubuntu over 600mb and XPU over 4gb. I know how to modify partitions from the Live CD. I'm wondering if it's possible to install XPU or any version of XP while the operating system is active. It was possible with Windows 98. This might be the wrong place to post, but I really want to dual-boot Windows. Linux is great, but I would like to use SOME of my stuff without WINE.

Nov 13, 2010I have an ASUS G51J notebook with Windows 7 installed. I was following This Guide. I set aside about 100GB for the Unallocated partition. When I started my laptop, I chose to boot from CD (which has an Ubuntu 10.10 ISO on it). I saw a purple background with two icons at the bottom of the screen, and eventually "Ubuntu" appeared in the center with a few dots underneath it. These dots would change color from left to right like a loading bar.
This is where my issue comes up. My friend was using this same CD on his Dell laptop and his desktop which has a XFX motherboard, Q6600 processor, and Invidia 470 graphics card. After this "loading bar" was done, he would be asked if he wanted to boot or install Ubuntu.
This didn't happen for me. What happened instead was that I saw what looked like my Windows desktop after having gone through a meat grinder. There were various icons randomly in pieces all over the place. The only icon that was in one piece (by chance) was my shortcut to Skype.
Has anyone seen this before? Am I doing something wrong? My friend was saying that maybe I should try with a fresh reinstall of Windows and try again. I wasn't even given the choice to just boot from disc. It got to the point where I expected it to give me the options to do so, but instead the Kansas version of my desktop shows up after being hit by an F5

Apr 25, 2010So I have been messing around with the new 10.04 and I managed to screw it up. When I started to log off, I closed the lid to my laptop so it would hibernate, but instead the screen went black and I could only see the cursor. It stayed like that for several minutes so I shut it down manually. When I booted it up again, it froze on the splash/loading screen and I haven't been able to boot it since. I've tried to boot in recovery mode, but I think my campus internet interferes with the downloading of the necessary files from the internet. Is there any way to boot a recovery mode from the install disc? Or am I SOL?

I cannot get into disc utility or anything. It almost seems like the computer doesn't know how to handle the disc. I did not use Refit and the only change I made to the boot loader was blessing the ubuntu partition.

In my old laptop I had an OEM Win XP disc that I bought specifically for dual boot purposes (didn't want the pre-installed vista). This only has a one PC usage though unfortunately.
how to make a windows 7 boot disk? I made a RECOVERY disk already, but I don't think that will work as a boot disk right? Particularly if I completely wipe out or swap out the HDD (which I might do).
fyi: I NEED Win7 for a few special programs for my school. WINE will not work and VirtualBox puts to much strain on my computer.
Debian Installation :: Several PCs And Also Verified The Disc?
Mar 25, 2011else had a problem with wheezy on cd1 install? I get to the install screen and can not go any farther as it will not pick up the keyboard or mouse. I have tried it on several PCs and also verified the disc. Just curious why there was not a 3/21 build? I have squeeze on my main drive and was wanting to install testing on my second drive with LXDE. It fun having stable running great on one drive and then playing around with testing on another. If you mess up so what format start over.
