URL....I can get it to read some DVDs, but I can't get it to burn any DVDs or blu-ray discs.

I don't know if the drive has just packed up (it is quite old) or if something else is wrong. I haven't actually used it for a long time and I've had quite a few kernel builds since then.The first symptom I noticed is that I can't open the tray except with a paperclip. If I do so, put a disc in and try to mount it, I get "no medium found". Also when I run wodim --scanbus, the drive isn't picked up.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm buying a new DVD rewriter as the tray on the current one doesn't open properly and it is quite old anyway. I'm going for the latest standard features, dual layer DVD +/- R(W) obviously with CD-R(W) support. I just wanted to know if I need to worry too much about whether it will be fully compatible with Debian or are most new drives supported? I'm planning on probably buying a Samsung device if that helps.Also, is there a definitive list of supported hardware to be found anywhere? I've searched round for quite a while and can't seem to find one?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded a live disc and installed ubuntu. The following day it wouldn't boot up so I went to deleting the partition. I got ripped off $100 because they had no clue what to do so they wiped my drive and reinstalled just windows instead of just using a recovery disc and typing "fxmbr". My friend borrowed me his ubuntu disc and I purchased another drive so that each OS could have its own drive. Well now neither of our discs work. Mine is a downloaded one his is one he was sent from Ubuntu.I am downloading another iso right now.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.

There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?
this blew my mind today, because i've been using ubuntu for 2 and half years. Brasero 2.28.2 in Karmic does not have an option enable multisessions when burning disc or import a disc which has a multisession.
Seriously, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be Ubuntu's default CD authoring software.
I'm trying to install files and everytime I manage to install from the first disc I succeed. When I get the the second disc I just keep clicking the "OK" button instead of "Cancel" and it keeps neglecting it.

In F12 runlevel 3 in mc I see it in /dev/disc/by-label as @Newx20Volume. But I don't know what is the correct path.
View 2 Replies View Relatedelse had a problem with wheezy on cd1 install? I get to the install screen and can not go any farther as it will not pick up the keyboard or mouse. I have tried it on several PCs and also verified the disc. Just curious why there was not a 3/21 build? I have squeeze on my main drive and was wanting to install testing on my second drive with LXDE. It fun having stable running great on one drive and then playing around with testing on another. If you mess up so what format start over.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install debian on a compaq presario 6000. When I try to boot off of the first dvd it just won't do anyting most of the time; one flat line keeps blinking. The first time that I booted it, there was that line that starts with isolinux, but that was only there the first time. now nothing shows up.That first time, I got several error messages: EDD: error 8000 reading sector 1360652 and the same thing 5 times over with different numbers at the end. Do these mean that the disc is corrupt in some way, or that the dvd reader is broken or something else?

I am at the install point of Software Selection packages and I don't want to install unnecessary ones. Desktop environment and Standard system are ticked by default. I am installing to a desktop machine. I don't think I need Web server and going to Apache's FAQ still didn't answer my question whether I need it or not. I am not sure about DNS server, either. At this point, the only one I am sure I need is the Printer server. I found one page that loosely describes these software collections, but I am still unsure. Since most people do not use dial up these days it isn't taken into account of the description.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have two sata HDs. One of these has Debian an Winxp installed. Grub is the bootloader. Grub resides in MBR (on the same disk). Now that I've added that second disk, I would like to test win7 on it. What I would like to do is to be able to choose -at boot time (maybe in bios setup)- between booting from the disk containing win7 or from the disk containing Grub with winxp and Debian. I thought that when installing win7 it would let me choose the disk where to install it and here is where the problem arises.
Win7 installer detects my partitions and lists them as if they were not on different disks. What would happen if I choose to install win7 on the partition I want to (second disk, partition1)? Will win7 create a new bootloader? Now I am a little confused and don't want to keep on going not being sure the results are what I expected. What steps should I follow to install win7 on the second hard disc not affecting the disc with winxp, debian and grub letting me choose between these two Operating Systems?
On my a few years old 64-bit Debian oldstable/Wheezie machine, I noticed my SATA DVD writer drive likes to close right away after I tell KDE v4.8.4's Dolphin to eject it. If I use terminal's eject command, then it will stay ejected until I manually close the drive. Why is that happening?
View 4 Replies View RelatedSometimes, I am unable to open the CD drawer whether there's a disc in it or not. I have a Dell laptop which gives me approx 4 methods to open the drawer:
1. Press the eject button on the drawer,
2. Type 'eject' from a command line,
3. Press 'fn + f10' on the keyboard,

If I use Ubuntu's (10.4) Startup Disc Creator app to create Debian (Lenny) start up USB I just get (when using it on a separate machine) a black screen with the text "boot:" If I press Enter I get a pale blue screen but nothing else, some text if I press the TAB key, but it will do nothing. Is this because I use Ubuntu for a Debian OS or is there some other problem? I've noticed that the disc creator in Ubuntu only really likes Ubuntu related OSs. But since it recognised it when I created it I would have thought it'd work!

When it does this and completes the disc check it doesn't properly establish network comms and I can't get in using SSH and I can't even ping the server.If I reboot again, it operates as normal but the problem is that the server is remote to me and I need to travel to the site when this occurs.

I installed debian etch on my system. Installation done successfully, but when it boots up the X server is not starting and showing error. Note : It is perfectly working with debian lenny. Configuration : Intel DG41RQ ,1GB Ram ,160GB HDD.

So I loaded Mint and thought maybe I would like that better. Decided to go back to Ubuntu, but keep having bootloader problems at the end of the install. I can still install Kubuntu or Mint whenever I want, but try to install Ubuntu 10.10 or 11.04 from disc and same bootloader problem.
View 7 Replies View Related2 weeks ago I installed 10.04 using the same ISO disc I am trying to use now. Other computer consisted of - ASUS P5GDC-V Deluxe mobo, P4 3.0 w/HT, 2 GB DDR400 OCZ platinum, radeon x300 PCIe graphics card and a sony dual layer dvd r/wr drive, WD 500GB SATA HDD.
Now using the same disc Im trying to install ubuntu 10.04 on this rig. ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo, Athlon XP 3200+, 2GB DDR 400 OCZ platinum, Radeon 9800XT AGP card, WD 500GB SATA HDD. ROM drive is set to first boot priority. It seems like it starts to boot, screen gets purple tinted background, and the small symbol/ guy show up at the bottom. Then the rom drive has some activity but the screen just goes blank and nothing ever happens.
I read somewhere that some older DVD rom drives can have trouble reading burned ISO images so I took the working ubuntu HDD out and put it in this computer but the same exact thing happened.
