Debian Multimedia :: Duration Of Dial-up Connections ?

Oct 22, 2010

On Debian 5.0 I wish record the duration of the dial-up connections. To connect I use Wvdial through Gnome PPP graphic interface. Do you know a program with graphic interface or that it creates a simply log file with for each connection: date-time start connection, date-time end connection, telephone number called?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Jack Stops All Audio For The Duration Of Its Run

Mar 9, 2011

I have had no problems whatsoever with audio in ubuntu 10.10. Both input and output have worked great, but alas now there's a problem.

I recently installed ardour2 with jack (using apt-get) but for some reason, anytime I start ardour2 (which starts jack implicitly) all audio stops on the whole computer. That is my computer goes silent. As soon as I exit ardour2 audio resumes.

Also, although this will probably resolve itself when I resolve the other problem, when exporting a project to audio file from ardour2 it exports silence for the entire duration, even when ardour2 is exited and audio has resumed.

I'm no linux novice, so I'm not afraid of command line solutions (I prefer them actually) however I know nothing about jack or audio editing in linux whatsoever, so if you could be very specific about jack terminology that would be great.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Wrong Time Duration After Concatenating Mp3 Files?

Nov 5, 2010

I have the following problem; When I concatenate several mp3 files the time duration is falsely detected by Rhythmbox when I open the newly created mp3 file. VLC Player however detects the correct time duration. I tried two ways of mergen the mp3's and both have the same falsely result. - mp3wrap- catI currently fixed it by opening the mp3 in VLC player and converted it again to a mp3 file which resolved the issue at hand. However this is not a solution I would like to have, nor a answer to what is the cause of the problem. So my question is simple -- what is the issue with the mp3 file and why is Rhythmbox indicating a falsely time duration?

Debian :: Best Backup Solution For Dial-up Users

Jun 22, 2011

i'm searching for an encrypted backup solution for dial-up users. I'm already using duply (duplicity), but it's not really the right software for a large backup and a slow connection. Every x month a new full backup is needed, and that's really slow.Is there better system for that? A file based encrypted system would be nice, so it's not needed to reupload every large file.

Debian :: Disc Install Dial Up - Web & DNS Server?

Apr 16, 2011

This is my first time to use Debian. I ordered the discs from LinuxCD - Debian 5.0.7. I am at the install point of Software Selection packages and I don't want to install unnecessary ones. Desktop environment and Standard system are ticked by default. I am installing to a desktop machine. I don't think I need Web server and going to Apache's FAQ still didn't answer my question whether I need it or not. I am not sure about DNS server, either. At this point, the only one I am sure I need is the Printer server. I found one page that loosely describes these software collections, but I am still unsure. Since most people do not use dial up these days it isn't taken into account of the description.

Ubuntu :: Audio Duration Zero / Fix For This?

May 7, 2010

I recently did a fresh install of 10.04 and am experiencing a really weird issue. I right click on an audio file (in my case an MP3) and pull up the properties. I select the Audio tab and look at the duration for the file. All of my file (which play just fine) are showing a zero duration. Is this a known bug and is there a fix for this somewhere?

I should note that these are all valid MP3 files, with duration time previously showing under a 9.10 install.

General :: Thunderbird - Incoming Mail Signal Duration ?

Mar 25, 2011

I'm trying to set up my Thunderbird 3.1.8 (running on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) to play a .wav file of my choice when new mail arrives. The file I've chosen is 8,8 KB in size and lasts 3 seconds. I've selected the "Play a sound" + "Use the following sound file" options in my Preferences, but only the first second (if that) of the sound gets played - both when I click the "Play" button in the Preferences menu to test it, as well as when receiving mail. Restarting the program with my new settings doesn't help.

Actual question(s):
- Is there a limit on the size/duration of the sound one can use for such a signal in this program?
- Is there any way to modify this limit?

Is it possible, if so how, to change this amount of time?

Security :: Policy That Limits Connections On Port - Encapsulates Total Sum Of All Connections From Hosts?

Jan 21, 2011

Is it fair to say that connLimit and hashlimit are very similiar on Linux i.e. while hashlimit caters to limits for groups of ports, they both set the connection rate limit per host? How in IPTables, do I configure a policy that limits connections on a port that encapsulates the total sum of all connections from all hosts? i.e. I do not want to allow more than 6000conn/minute for port range that is the sum of all connecting hosts?

Ubuntu Networking :: Low Retention Duration For Cached Addresses By DNSMASQ

Nov 12, 2010

I am experiencing severe DNS delays today, so I tried to install DNSMASQ by following the instructions given on several pages on the web to make it function as a local DNS cache.

The installation was successful, and after editing the configuration files as instructed, I now have a working DNS cache on my computer.

However, it seems that the addresses are not cached for a long time ; for a given domain, the speedup lasts for a few minutes. If I try to access a previously visited domain once more after several minutes, a new (slow) external lookup is made.

Since websites' IP addresses are not changed every five minutes, would there be a way to tell DNSMASQ to keep the IPs in the cache for a long time (several hours at least) ?
This is very important for me because the DNS lag that I am experiencing makes external lookups last 10 to 20 seconds.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox As DAAP Client : Does Not Close Connections

Feb 9, 2010

This is more of a question for developers of rhythmbox DAAP support. I am using rhythmbox to remotely access music exported by mt-daapd server. It works fine. But it does not seem to close connections properly. This problem is very severe when you press "prev" button a few times. How to reproduce (this just one way):

1) Start playing a few songs (playlist or an album).
2) press "next" button a few times
3) then press "prev" a few times.

The playback might even pause for many seconds if you are not a LAN. Now check connections opened by Rhythmbox.. (netstat -n | grep 3689 on client). You will notice a lot of connections, and they stay for a very long time.. multiple hours. Let me know if anyone needs more info.

Debian Configuration :: Refuses Port Connections - VNC

Sep 29, 2010

I'm trying to setup VNC on our debian server so the boss can remotely do admin stuff from anywhere in the world. the first step is getting it working from anywhere in the room, though. And I can't even seem to get that far.

So far I have a VNC server setup, although not without problems. I downloaded and installed vnc from the vnc site, that wouldn't work because trying to start a vnc server gave this error: "error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

There are lots of results on google for this error, and the solution everywhere seems to be the same. to install the package: libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2

However, trying to install this package in debian fails. both using apt-get and trying to manually download it from packages.debian.org it just doesn't seem to exist.

I've tried tightvnc from the official repositories and it gives the same error, too.

The way I got around that eventually, thanks to another tutorial, was to install the package vnc4server. then run vnc4passwd to create a password. and after that vncserver works fine, or seems to. Creates display 1.

Now, when I'm trying to connect to hostname:1 from another computer in the LAN. It gives error 10061, connection refused. I installed the debian and I don't recall setting it up to refuse connections on port 1. Is there anything I should check or change to allow the connection, or any log file in debian to check and see what's going wrong?

I'm also trying connecting internally via client on the debian machine, but I can't runvncviewer. I get the same missing shared library error as before. I guess I just worked around, not solved it.

I also can't access it with the java viewer. Trying to connect on port 5801 either from the server itself, or from another one on the lan, tells me it's refusing the connection.

To be clear, I'm certain that the vnc server is started. We have working DNS, and trying to connect directly to the internal IP:1 doesn't work either.

Debian :: Gvfsd-http Leaves Many Connections Open

Feb 22, 2011

Looking at the results of both `lsof | grep IPv4` and `netstat -tp` I noticed that I have a lot of connections open from a program called 'gvfsd-http'.

Using google, I found that this was a Filesystem something from Gnome, that would also be used If I drag something from my browser to my desktop.

Though I wonder, how I activated it, because I didn't do that...

After a bit of searching, I noticed that `screenshots.debian.net` uses the same IP address as the one noted (hades.car.gr).

PING screenshots.debian.net (78.46.20.5) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from hades.car.gr (78.46.20.5): icmp_req=1 ttl=56 time=55.4 ms

Question: Do I have some tool enabled that maybe sends statistics to debian or so? Where to find it and kill it.

Debian Configuration :: Load Balancing Over Uneven Connections?

Jan 31, 2011

A little background: CCNA and A+ I have preformed this task on Cisco routers Linux for 5+ years, mostly with Debian (mostly casual, a few production situations) I need to setup a linux box with Load Balancing over a cable line 8mb down, 1mb up connection and a T1 line. If this isn't possible, at the very least I need Failover (which I have admittedly not researched as fully.) I know Failover is possible, but I would really love to double my upload bandwidth as we host a small website here. Is load balancing over uneven connections possible on Debian?

Side question: If I host a website, when users connect and get responses over 2 Public IP's, what would be the reaction on the users side? Would it get filtered and or blocked by a firewall?
