brand new 2 Ubantu & set up standard Ubantu compartment accessed via 1 user name only and password. 1st few times all good but now suddenly, unexpectedly password declared invalid. I looked on the internet to find a way to reset those, but all the solutions involve making a boot disk or using some peripheral. The computer I am using does not have any peripherals (only keyboard and screen) because it's an onboard computer in a robot.
Is there a way to reset the password and username without using peripherals (and without losing the information on the hard disk)?
I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm having a hard time installing Ubuntu 10.10 (32bits). I load the CD and everything's ok throughout the installing procedure, but when the installation is over and it says it's gonna reboot it doesn't do it!
The screen resembles a terminal with a message like "the computer is going to reboot NOW!" but it could stay like that for hours. The keyboard is locked so I can't reboot by commands, and if I press CTRL+ALT+DEL it just reprints the same message. Therefore I'm forced to turn off my computer manually.
After that, the Ubuntu desktop doesn't load. The screen shows a terminal asking for my username and password to access the computer. No graphics at all.
Is there a way to SSH into a server (my home computer) from behind a proxy that has a username and password? I read about corkscrew, but I was wondering if there is a simpler way.

I currently have a UNIX script with a function that uses a username and password to connect to the database, retrieve some information and then exit. At the moment, am getting the username and password from a hidden plain text file and permission set to -r--------, i.e. read only to who own the file. The owner of the file is the same owner of the script. At the moment, am not too overly concern as the script works as it is but I want to know if anyone have a suggestion if there is any better way of achieving the same thing with some "form" of security, i.e., for example, masking the username/password.
Basically, I want to be able to mask or hide the username or password in some way. I've thought about encryting the password file, which is in plain text, using simple crypt command from which I retrieve the username and password but I need to decrypt it as well which is sort of similar to how it will be as it is now once it is decrypted. Is there anyway that I can get a username and password in some gibberish format and then translating them into something usable which can be passed on the next command that requires the username/password.
Its been since October since I accessed my Arch OS, due to a career and phical move. Since that time I forgot my username and password (including root).My question is, is there a way to get around it without starting from scratch?
