Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04.1LTS Freezes In Pentium Dual Core Laptop?

May 6, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu10.04.1LTS in my Desktop amd64 computer. I also downloaded the same version for i386 processors and tried to install the OS for my HCL Pentium Dual Core T4300 @2.1Ghz 4GB RAM laptop, details of which are given in the following two screenshots: dscf0105.jpg and dscf0106.jpg I already have Debian Lenny 5.0.4 installed on the laptop dscf0104.jpg and the laptop works fine when I run the Debian OS or Knoppix liveCD image stored in the HDD of the laptop. We all know that the Ubuntu LTS live CD leads to the following option: Screenshot.jpg However, in my laptop the operation freezes before we can reach the above option. The screenshot explains the situation: dscf0107.jpg I know I could always use one of the alternate downloads and install the OS from it. But my point of contention is: where is the matter going wrong? Can't we use the graphical installer CD to do a CUI installation?

Debian :: Wheezy Only Recognizes 1 Core Or Dual Core CPU?

Sep 7, 2011

I have now installed Wheezy on two different hard drives and in each case it seems only one CPU of my dual core CPU computer is recognized. System Monitor, Gkrellm and lscpu show just one when prior to the new install the old Wheezy showed both CPU's. I have put the hard drive into two other computers with dual core CPU's and all show just one CPU.

Interestingly System Profiler and Benchmark (hardinfo?) > Devices > Processors now show a large amount of processor infomation when with the old Wheezy I would only see both CPU's listed and nothing else.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Upgrade To An Acer Revo R3610 Dual Core Intel Atom 1?

Dec 14, 2010

I have a question that has been partially answered in other posts and forums but I am still unclear. Please can someone help me out? I was previously using an Intel Atom 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM and the onboard Intel graphics adaptor for use as a media center PC. This was running Lubuntu and I could use Flash at full screen without any issues.

I have since decided to upgrade to an Acer Revo R3610 (Dual core Intel Atom 1.6GHz, 4GB RAM, Corsair SSD and Nvidia ION grpahics). I thought that as this machine was more powerful than my previous one, I could get away with ditching Lununtu and go for Ubuntu 10.10 (x86).

I have updated the machine and installed the latest Nvidia drivers. When I browse to a Flash based site all runs fine until I go to full screen then I get about 10FPS (sound remains fine). The video is unwatchable. I rebuilt the machine using Windows 7 Ultimate (x86) and tested again. Under Windows the video plays perfectly.

I have also tried using the 10.2 beta version of Flash under Ubuntu and this gives the same terrible results. I am at a loss as to where the issue lies. Is it with Nvidia's driver, Adobe's Flash under Linux or is it my Ubuntu build?

Programming :: Initializing The SS Register (Intel Architecture)?

Jul 9, 2011

Kernel 2.6.21.5, slackware 12.0 as 2.17 [I am speaking here about 80x86 processors, with their segment registers SS, DS, CS, ES.] In a source file for as, I wrote

Code:

.section _STACK
.rept 4096
.word 0
.endr

Now, in the .text section, I want to initialize SS, the stack segment, to point to the _STACK section. In other assemblers, there was a special section for the stack, and the linker cared about initializing SS. Here I use a common section for the stack. For a segment such as DS, I could write

mov ax,_DATA
mov ds,ax

But I don't think mov ax,_STACK would do with as/ls.how do I initialize SS?

General :: System Architecture For Dual Boot 64 Bit?

Mar 27, 2011

I've been running Fedora 10 since it came out (I'm doing some numerical modeling for my thesis), but I've got some questions about a new box I'm going to build. I am going to build a new 64bit machine, dual boot with Win7 and Poseidon Linux (waiting for the 64bit version to come out later this year).is there an advantage to having each OS reside on a different physical HDD? meaning - 1 hard drive for Win and 1 hard drive for Linux and just decide which HDD to boot when I turn the machine on. -or is it better to have them reside on the same HDD and just have a separate HDD for data / storage? -is there a good resource to describe some optimal architecture's? I've searched through the forums and haven't found anything that concise / on-target / similar. As additional info: this box will be my livelihood, so right now, money is not really an object in terms of HDDs, etc.

Fedora :: Does SMP Perform At Its Optimum In Intel Core I7?

Sep 19, 2009

This is a general technical question about Symmetric Multiprocessing in relation to the Intel Core i7. (Actually, it's more about Hyperthreading than i7.) My understanding is that Symmetric Multiprocessing means that the operating system treats all processors as identical, and therefore it can assign a new thread to any free processor.

And that i7 appears to the OS as 8 processors, 0 thru 7. But from a performance perspective, the 8 processors are not identical, because each core has 1 execution engine plus the ability to store the state of 2 threads. This is, as far as I understand it, the essence of Intel's Hyperthreading. So each execution engine can quickly switch between 2 threads without bothering the OS, but only one thread at a time actually executes.

Suppose, for example, all processors are idle and the OS assigns one thread to processor 0, then has a second thread to assign. Since all free processors are considered identical, the OS could assign the second thread to any free processor, say 1. The result would be that both threads are competing for the same execution engine, while the other 3 cores remain idle. Is my understanding of SMP correct?

If so, does linux SMP take full advantage of Intel Hyperthreading (which existed also in earlier Intel processors)? That is, does linux SMP assign threads in such a way that it attempts to choose an idle execution engine? I don't know what algorithm SMP actually uses to choose the processor. For example, it could be the first free processor, or any free processor chosen at random. How about Windows? How does it handle the situation?

Edit: I have also posted this question in linuxforums and phoronix forums. I hope this doesn't count as cross-posting, since those forums are not on this site and they have different readership. If it is indeed cross-posting, please let me know and I will avoid doing it in future.
