Question: "where/how can I look for the correct repository to install X application?, let say I want to install synaptic, or google chrome or X, I know I need the right repositories added to my sources.list.. but what are the right repositories?, is there a "repository finder" or someting like that?

I've been trying to identify all files on my cut-down version of Damn Small which contain the text string "User Agent:" in them. Because it's only 120Mb in its entirety, I'm quite happy to have grep search the whole system. I'm using this command, but it just generates errors as you can see:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run "sudo pbuilder create" where it runs debootstrap. Then it says:

I: Checking component main on http://bg.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu. Problem is that this is the old repo I've used. After installing pbuilder and the other dpkg essential packages I've run "sudo pbuilder create", noticed the message of the repo and since I am no longer in Bulgaria, interrupted the script, went to synaptic and changed the repo from there (now is http://archive.linux.duke.edu/ubuntu/). Even rebooted. Double-checked in synaptic the repo is still changed, grepped the files in /etc/apt for "bg" and all results were commented. I ran again "sudo pbuilder create" and it still reports the old repo.
So where does debootstrap reads the repo setting from and how to fix it?
When update ubuntu 8.04 amd 64 show this message: Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to update Fedora 15 for weeks. I always end up with a transaction error and the update stalls. The error reads: GPG keys listed for RPM Fusion for Fedora Rawhide-free repository are installed but they are not correct for this package. Check that the correct key urls are configured for this repository.
This is far too involved for a linux newbie, I think my only option is to reformat and reinstall. This is so frustrating, there are 250 MB of updates available that I can't access.
I had some major bugs with KDE 4.3 and 4.4 and the only way that I could fix them was to install the entire KDE 4.5. This was mid-Summer. Now I would like to upgrade to Maverick the proper way and have 4.5 in a stock repo.
I managed to get most of kde back to stock by luck and uninstall/reinstalling kdebase stuff and kubuntu-desktop a couple of times. A pain in the neck trying to find important packages that are already installed from a previous PPA.
BTW my sources.list is stock right now.
Does anyone know of a way to search for installed PPA packages that are not in the stock repository?

i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.

I have done a yum clean all , which didnt really help either. reinstalling the rpmfusion repos isnt an option either as I start getting curl errors in the terminal. I am really at a loss here and am completely out of ideas as I cant install any updates or software , at first I thought the repositories were having problems with the holidays but this has been going on for 4 days now. /var/log/messages isnt showing anything either.
