View 2 RepliesI have installed WICD on Debian . I can now access a new a Network Manager screen, which did not exist before, but it does not display/detect any wireless networks. It is like dead. Before installing WICD I did at least have a wireless WPE encrypted network, which was detected, although it often disconnected for no known reasons. Now even that Network has gone and I can't go on line. Can anybody help here? How can I configure the WICDNetwork Manager to detect an existing network or create a new one? In the latter case, would I have to reconfigure the Router settings to setup/connect to a network in Debian? May be I have to do this, because Tor/Vidalia changes my IP address and so my Network Adapter ( Linksys) can no longer connect to the router.
Also, when trying to follow troubleshooting leads in this connection, the Terminal screen on Debian ( CMD) would often return a PERMISSIONS DENIED message.
I use a 'wifi hotspot' provided by my mobile (android) phone for internet/email and to connect to my wifi capable HP p1102w printer. Installation and use of the printer worked perfectly until I bought a new phone, again android with 'wifi hotspot' capability. The wifi connection on my new phone works fine for internet and email but it totally fails to detect my printer.
I have tried to detect and connect to the printer using system-config-printer and using the HP utility hp-setup. Both fail to detect the printer on the 'new' wifi network.
The old network connection which detects the printer as expected gives the following output:

It seems that my network manager may be running in root mode...
For instance in network connections, edit and delete are greyed out. if i click add, i am unable to enter any details. if i run nm-connection-editor as root i am able to make changes.
How can i set it that the normal user can make changes? [managed is set to true in the conf file]
My ethernet and pppoe internet connection worked flawlessly in lenny. I erased my hard drive and installed squeeze and now only internet works. Since a recent update on Stretch, I have been unable to use the network-manager to connect to my home wireless network on my laptop. It was working fine before. I did not change any settings on the WLAN router. I can still connect to other wireless networks at work and university, just not this particular one at home. All other non-Debian devices in my household are still able to connect just fine.While figuring this out, I have tried connecting manualy with ifup but I don't really know how that works. Right now there is only the loopback entry in /etc/network/interfaces.

I just upgraded my Debian stretch via apt-get and I noticed that the network manager is missing at least 2 icons: the mobile broadband icon and the settings icon. I haven't found any bug reports or other information about how to restore them. The icons were there after initial installation of version 8.2.0 from DVD.

After fossicking around I can not find anything around that I can invoke in a terminal to configure settings in network-manager. The applet(?) on the task bar doesn't ask for a login, so options are grey/grayed out. The "program" in the applications menu is similarly grey/grayed out.
If it was a once off, then I suspect that it would be simple as login as root to start X, but I have a series of config files to edited each time of their initial use. also, there is the ongoing problem of vpn target switching.
woops; wheezy with xfce4 and everything is uptodate.
I can't seem to get this to work without having to physically create connections as root. The "Available to all users" in the nm settings box remains uncheckable, despite completing the following tasks:

After today's squeeze update the nm-applet (it updated it to version 0.8.4-1) crashes when trying to connect to my vpn (pptp). I'm pretty new when it comes to this so I'm not sure what to do. I tried looking at the log file (applications--> system tools-->log file viewer) but I don't know what to make of it.

I just installed, and evolution doesn't seem to think it has internet. The icon with the power cord in the bottom left is unplugged, and send/receive is greyed out. Internet is working , but it is not using network manager, since network manager says no internet is connected. Maybe this has something to do with it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a new install of Debian Squeeze from debian-6.0.0-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso but I'm experiencing problems with the wireless internet applet in the taskbar.When the computer boots, it doesn't connect automatically eventhough I have it set as such. I have to fiddle with it until I get the request from KDE Wallet Manager to insert the password to complete the connection. I didn't have this behavior in Kubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use network-manager in sid and it's incredibly frustrating because every 2 minutes or so it seems to scan for wireless access points, during which time my SSH connections completely hang and screw up. Pings start dropping packets as well. By doing an "iwlist scan" I can reproduce the behavior. Has anyone else dealt with this? I haven't been using network-manager, but I am currently due to mobility and needed VPN functionality... WICD with no network-manager works better but there's no gui-based VPN support. I've got an Atheros wireless device and I've read that supposedly it should be doing background scanning since kernel 2.6.32, but I haven't seen anything like that, and I'm on 2.6.32-5-amd64 currently, 2.6.32-3-amd64 behaves the same too.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just updated my Squeeze system. The update included a newer version of network-manager (and it can not be more than a few hours old). After the update all network functionality on my machine (via knetwork-manager) is broken. The GUI applet has no effect.
Hence can anyone help me: a) Downgrade network-manager by one version; b) Find out what is causing knetworkmanager to break; c) See if the problem is with knetworkmanager or network-manager.
I am currently using Debian Testing, managing my wireless connection with NetworkManager and the Gnome nm-applet. Both have just been updated: network-manager from 0.8.1-6+squeeze1 to 0.8.2-6 and network-manager-gnome from 0.8.1-2 to 0.8.2-4.On installation of the new packages, I have no problems. However, on a reboot, I can no-longer connect to any wireless connection. I am not prompted on start-up for the password to unlock the Gnome keyring and when I left-click on the nm-applet icon and then click on a network to connect to it, nothing happens.I do not think this is a driver or NetworkManager daemon problem. If I run "nmcli dev wifi" or left-click on the applet icon, NetworkManager seems to scan for wireless networks properly and returns a list including the one I wish to connect to.

My issue now is that I can not find a version of Network Manager that allows me to configure to use the Modem connection. There is simply no modem tab in Network manager. So my modem is connected to the ISP but I can't configure the connection.

I just installed x64 Fedora, and as the title says, NM fails to detect my WiFi card. It's an Encore ENLWI-N with a RaLink RT2800 chipset. The card does show up when I run lspci, although iwconfig yields nothing.Not sure if this helps, but when Ias running Karmic Koala, Ubuntu detected the card immediately and required no configuration

I have a k3806-z vodafone mobile broadband modem, on ubuntu 10.04. I have added the mobile broadband connection with the network manager wizard. But network manager does not list my connection. I installed usb-modeswitch and usb-modeswitch-data. Still nothing. The disc utility tells me it recognises the modem as a cd drive and a storage device. Evidently usb-modeswitch is not working.

Installed Lenny second but grub does not see Vista. Installed NTFS-g3 so I can read and write to /dev/sdc1 where my vista is. But grub still does not detect it. Installed grub2 and upgraded from legacy but still grub2 does not see the vista partition.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI am not able to use the touchpad, etc. on my laptop because the hardware is not supported until kernel 4.5. (This was confirmed by installing fedora-rawhide with 4.5: all the hardware problems were cleared up.) So I tried to compile a 4.5 kernel and install that in a testing version of Debian, but the hardware is still not working.
What I tried: copied the kernel boot config from the testing installation to the directory where the kernel was to be compiled, in order to keep the configuration of the current system. After compiling the kernel the first time I thought that perhaps the issue was that the right options for the new i2c-based hardware had not been selected in menuconfig and were not the default in the kernel config, so I compiled the kernel again, selecting the necessary hardware to be installed (and not as a module). But after the second (and third) kernel compiles the hardware still does not function (appears not to exist).
This is the first few times I've tried to compile a kernel, so I may be missing something obvious. After the second compile, I was wondering how to tell if the right kernel was in use, but grub only saw one 4.5 kernel (besides the original one) and I don't know where to look to see if the kernel has the different --revision=xyz it was assigned when running fakeroot make-kpkg. I was also wondering if it is possible to add the missing hardware by compiling the modules separately and adding them as boot options.
My driver is rt2870sta. I know it works because wicd can detect a WEP network, but it can't detect my WPA network despite me being right next to the hub. I consulted the wiki and have wpa_supplicant installed.

On an unrelated point, my other usb wifi adapter uses ath9k_htc, but it isn't included with the kernel. I thought it was supposed to be?
