Debian Configuration :: Kernel 2.6.32 And Xserver Freezes - Crash Fubar?

Sep 28, 2010

I run an old Toshiba Satellite M35x S114 Laptop with Debian Testing, it always runned smoothly - although it IS testing . Since the latest update to kernel 2.6.32 , the X server just freezes. The init goes all the way to gdm, and then a blank screen , no mouse pointer, no way to get out of this screen (not CTRL+ALT+BACSPACE not CTRL+ALT+F1 / F2 ... etc) just a hard reset.

I can boot to the older .30 kernel with absolutely no problem, gdm starts normally login successfull (as I am able to write this on the reffered machine and all).

Here comes the gory details:

>>> The graphic card:
lspci | grep gra
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
>>> When it works with .30 kernel:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
code....

Noting that there are no more Modlines in the new Xorg.0.log

Besides, X is disabling the mouse and keyboard in the configuration.

Debian Configuration :: Couldn't Connect To Linsys WMP600N PCI Card - Ralink Chipset - 28xx 2800 2860

Aug 23, 2010

I have Debian 5.0.3 and I've had a lot of trouble installing Linsys WMP600N PCI card - Ralink chipset - 2860. I had it installed in the board, before I installed/compiled Debian. What I'm thinking I should have done was chosen Desktop and Laptop during the guided install. I tried expert install, but I was over-whelmed with options. Anyways, I tried NDISwrapper in many different ways. My last tries showed that the driver and device was working. No matter what I did, I would never get an interface with a wireless extension. I couldn't find any useful information anywhere, including Ubuntu forums - I'm sure you think I'm stupid or evil.

I eventually figured I would get the drivers directly from Ralink website. [URL] The one that looked like it would work (RT2860PCI/mPCI/CB/PCIe(RT2760/RT2790/RT2860/RT2890) would error out when I would try to extract anything. I used 2nd one (RT2860WebUI) which worked. If anyone does use it, be sure to read all documentation that is included, including the README. After I was done installing/compiling it, I got ra0 interface and could see my router.

I couldn't connect to it because I use WPA2 and that wasn't an option for encryption. I will work on that later. I wanted to share this information with anyone who might need this.

General :: Error: Cannot Start Xserver

Jun 10, 2011

Using GNOME2.X (default) and Fluxbox on ZorinOS4(upgraded from ubuntu10.10 to 11.04) When I boot up everything goes fine right up until the splash screen. Once I get to that, Screen goes black for 3 seconds or so, Then the command line pops up, Asks me for LOGIN: and PASSWORD:, and after I enter that it starts fsck then says something like:

Code:

/dev/sda5 mounted - sda5 mounted 22 times without check, Forcing check-- sda5 CLEAN Xnumberofblocks/Ynumberof blocks...

Error: cannot start Xserver

If needed I can reboot my machine and write the whole thing out and post it back. sda5 shows it is filesystem, ext4, 25g ,mounted at /,Partition type Linux(0x83), partition flags: - SO after it does a force check it brings me back to hevithan:$ ... I tried typing fluxbox to run that instead of GNOME and it says Error: failed to launch. Xserver is running.. So I reboot, and select: ubuntu-linux version(recovery mode). Look at the startup log it says what I already got in command: Failed to boot XServer is already running. So I select Restart X and it works fine after that.

Things I have downloaded/installed recently:

*Used additional drivers to enable propitiatory drivers.

*Thunderbird

*Simdock (Which I didn't like) so...

*Docky

*A comic book reader (I forget the name but it was in the repos) and a few upgrades to software/programs I already had.

Why is X trying to start 2 times? Why is it forcing FSCK every time? Could anything I have downloaded changed my GRUB or Kernel info and confused the system?

Ubuntu Installation :: XServer Will Not Start After Upgrade 9.10 To 10.04?

May 2, 2010

I upgraded to 10.04 and when trying to boot, the computer would hang at the splash screen. Going into recovery mode showed nothing in the log files. The Xorg and gdm logs were zero bytes but had the proper timestamp. I tried and tried, but could not get it to boot until I removed the nvidia-current package. Then the computer will boot, but the screen is partially corrupted with just a blue background. I can hit enter, then type my password and I can actually login, but I can't see a thing. I can cycle through the resolutions with Ctrl +, but the screen just still has a blue background and nothing else. Trying to boot in failsafe X mode gives the same screen. I tried putting the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but no change.

I've tried the i915.modeset=0 boot option. I've tried the "xforcevesa" boot option, but nothing will give me a readable screen. As soon as I re-installed the nvidia-current package and ran nvidia-xconfigure, the problem came back and it hangs again. At this point, I'm stuck. I would settle for a plain VGA screen at this point, but I can't even seem to get that. I've read several posts here with similar problems and tried every solution put forth, I think, but have not found a solution. When the upgrade wanted to install the new /etc/default/grub, I kept my old one. I compared the two files at the time, but I didn't see anything new, but maybe I missed something. What new items if any does the upgrade put into /etc/default/grub?

Ubuntu :: Start Xserver Without -nolisten Option?

Sep 1, 2011

I have the following problem with Xserver which I think can be solved by starting it without the -nolisten option:

Server - (say 192.168.1.1) has the X application installed
Client - (say 192.168.1.2) is a stock standard ubuntu 11.04 client machine with screen and xserver installed.

I need to be able to run the X application on the ubuntu client by exporting the display on the server as follows:

Code:
export DISPLAY=192.168.1.2:0.0
xeyes
I have run 'xhost +' on the ubuntu client to disable access control however I still get the error:

Code:
Error: Can't open display: 192.168.1.2:0.0
I believe this is because xserver is started with the -nolisten option:

Code:
ps -ef | grep listen
root 1020 989 1 18:21 tty7 00:00:27 /usr/bin/X :0 -nr -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-V9E9KA/database -nolisten tcp vt7
Both server and client are not connected to the outside world and are in a trusted environment so security is not a concern (I realise doing the above is a serious security issue)

I cannot use ssh tunneling for the xserver traffic as the proprietory program relies on the DISPLAY variable been set to the correct client ip. (Would be great if I could though!!)

I have searched the /etc directory for the -nolisten option and have found the following file: /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc. I removed the -nolisten tcp option however the xserver still starts with the -nolisten tcp option.

I have been looking through the xserver manuals however cant find too much relating to this.

Does anyone have any pointers as to how i could start the xserver without the -nolisten option?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Find The Right Command To Start Another XServer?

Jun 30, 2010

I tried my best on searching for the answer to this question. I couldn't find the right command to start another XServer. Maybe I just don't know how to look for it, or I'm using the wrong keywords. Anyway, what I want to happen is hit CTRL+ALT+F6 (F7 to return to my desktop) and start another XServer to run a full screen game. How do i do that? Is it possible to have multiple instances of X?

By the way, the error says that an instance of x server is already running on display 0 after I have issued this command: Code: startx In case you're wondering why this is my solution, it's because scripting is not my type for automatically making an xserver when I click a game, especially if you'd have to do it for all other games :/ So, let's stick to my idea D unless it's impossible, of course. EDIT: I was able to get a new xserver with xterm in it, but it seems there is no acceleration or some sort >.< OpenLieroX runs at a frame rate of 15 fps or so. Anyone have an idea on how to enable acceleration on openbox?

Debian Configuration :: How To Auto-start GUI As Root

Sep 28, 2015

I have a "time-server". It's sending time to different devices through different ports/protocols. The problem is that it has no operator and that makes some extra difficulties.

Now when i try to start it using terminal Code: Select allsudo ./myprogram works fine and

Code: Select all./myprogram doesn't work.

It is so because without sudo i have no access to ports. As a result If i add my program to System->Preferences->Startup Applications it has the same problem. So i need to start it as root, auto-start, right after auto-login to system but without entering password cause nobody will do it.

Also I need to start ntpd but it also asks password sometimes I've tried googles but it offer a few ways with entering password that isn't suitable for me or writing some scripts/changing system files but with no example I'm afraid to break it all. So is there a way to start Myprogram and NTPD as root with no password entering?

My system is Debian 6.0.10 Squeeze, Kernel 2.6.32-5-686

Debian Configuration :: Can't Start X - Repairing Permissions

May 29, 2011

my ENTIRE hard drive now has user AND group permissions root. I can't start X and are having various permissions issues. although ive been using linux for a long time.

long story long, I did a debian netinst to my netbooks SSD. got everything EXACTLY as I wanted it, was very happy with my first go at debian but of course being a linux dork im always willing to tweak. I installed onto btrfs which I recently learned supports compression which not only saved precious SSD space (only 8GBs) but according to some benchmarks also improved performance. this was a boot option and would only start compressing new files. this, of course, could not be good enough. so I formatted my SD card btrfs, mounted it with compress option + my SSD defaults and copied over all files that weren't a mount (i.e. proc, dev, sys,...) however I forgot to copy permissions. so every file was copied with root:root ownership and I didn't realize this when booting to the SD card to verify things were working as I assumed ( never do this ) that getting to a login terminal was enough. So now I need to fix all permissions and I would really prefer it be without a clean install.

A netinst can take a dec amount of time and I had a lot of tweaking to do since I only used Xorg + i3 tiling wm. there has to be a way to fix this...I started trying to reinstall all the packages but kept running into issued where aptitude wasn't able to reinstall things like bash or perl-base, presumably bc they were in use or had incorrect permissions set

Debian Configuration :: Auto Start Proxy On Boot

Aug 13, 2015

I have a debian 8.1.1 server running owncloud and a proxy server at home. I have everything working fine, with one exception. The proxy server won't start on boot. If I ssh into the server, then run "sockd -D" as root, it starts up and runs just fine. Any guides I find refer to the init.d script method that worked in Wheezy, but that isn't working. I think it has to do with Jessie switching to systemd? I had used someone elses script in init.d, and ran update-rc.d, but it still doesn't start.

With Jessie, how can I make "sockd -D" execute on system startup?

Debian Configuration :: Nm-applet Doesn't Start After (Testing)

Feb 22, 2016

After the latest update of network-manager-gnome to version 1.1.90-3 , I see that I have to start the nm-applet in Testing from a terminal, otherwise I can't bring up my wired connection.

The usual nmcli networking on command is failing to connect, also restarting the network-manager.service with systemctl doesn't do anything, the only way to connect at this time is indeed to manually start the nm-applet from a terminal.

I've also spotted this message in the logs:

Code: Select alltraps: nm-applet[1105] general protection ip error:0 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.4600.2

Could it be something wrong with my configuration (although , it worked before this update) or is it some bug in network-manager-gnome 1.1.90 ?

Debian Configuration :: Correct Way To Start Multiple Instances Of MPD?

The first thing that comes to my mind is to add (copy) the script in /etc/init.d and the /etc/rc* directories by hand. Debian's automatic handling of init scripts on package install/removal is quite nice, so I tend to shy away from making any manual changes if there's an automated way to do it. Which leads me to the question: is there an official way to run a second instance of a daemon? (Tried google, didn't find much more than a bug report).
